My brain again started thinking of story possibilities in regards to the alternate costumes (including pre-order additions).
Ryu:
Hot Ryu: Current story line, Ryu has been in isolation after completing many months worth of intensive training
Alpha Ryu: (Pre) Alpha story line, leading up to the events of the World Warrior Tournament
***Chun-Li
Cop Chun-Li: Pre Alpha story line, before Chun-Li became an interpol agent, she was a cop, which means we might see the events leading up to her father’s disappearence/murder and her pursuit against Shadaloo. This could be great for chracter development as Cop Chun-Li would be more headstrong and reckless.
Hot Chun-Li: Current story line, I see Chun-Li either doing some undercover investigation at a party (at Kanzuki estate perhaps) or just enjoying the night life
Nash
Alpha Nash: Alpha storyline, we see the events that lead up to Charlie’s “death” before he gets resurrected.
M. Bison
Sleeveless Bison: Post SFIV-Current story, this one was hard for me to grasp because I thought of ttwo things. 1) After defeating the final boss (M. Bison), you have to fight him again but this time, he’s a psycho power infused boss. 2) Bison somehow comes back after surviving Akuma’s assault
Dictator Bison: Current story: worse case scenario, good guys lose, bad guys win, Shadaloo takes over the world, and Bison’s costume would be his “king of the world” robe or something
Cammy
Military Cammy: Current Story line, Cammy’s delta red outfit uniform when being debriefed on a mission
Skydiving Cammy: Not sure if this (or any other DLC costumes) would be used in the story mode, but maybe we see Cammy skydiving down onto Shadaloo’s base of operations
Birdie
Jumpsuit Birdie: I have no idea. I wanna say pre-current story or even Alpha story line where she’s still a shadaloo thug
Ken
Alpha Ken: (pre) Alpha, leading up to the events of the World Warrior tournament
Necali
Aztec Necali: Reminds me of Kotal Khan, but I honestly have no clue for this one. I thought it looked like a boss costume, but I feel there can be more to it than that
Vega
Masquerade Vega: Vega infiltrates a party to assasinate the head of the Kanzuki estate (only to be intercepted by Chun-Li?)
***R. Mika
***- Leotard R. Mika: Tag team outfit with Zangief?
Rashid
Casual Rashid: Pre story line, before his friend disappears
Karin
Dress Karin: Kari at a party at her estate (maybe she and Sexy Dress Chun-Li might have interactions, only to be interrupted by vega)
Zangief
Leotard Zangief: Tag team outfit with R. Mika?
Laura
Hot Laura: Casual Laura, that’s all I can think of. her costume when she’s just enjoying a nice hot day outside
Stone Necalli is when he is first awakened from his tomb I think. His default costume is how he was from before the slumber.
Final Bison is from a flashback retelling of the Alpha series as hinted in an interview or it is from the final chapters of the current story. His black outfit is ceremonial, celebrating his victory perhaps or making a speech to his army or to world leaders.
Chun-Li’s pre-order outfit is her ‘slave Leia’ outfit. Bison forced her to wear it after she was captured, and she is now his ‘guest’. He tells her about his plans while she is in this outfit probably. Cop Chun-Li is definitely a pre-Alpha 2 sequence.
Karin’s outfit is what she will be wearing when the heroes/villains interrupt her at her place during her dinner party asking for help/trying to attack the Kanzuki clan. Vega is probably at this dinner party when it happens.
Zangief and Mika’s tag team outfits are from them tag teaming during the story. Poor Nadeshiko.
Hot Ryu is how he looks like after a long absence in the mountains training. He’s been training in solitude ever since the end of SF4 and has overcome his demons.
By the way, guys… What kind of storytelling would you like in SFV?
Recently I’ve read in several places people that say they actually prefer a story mode with no battles, just narration, like the las GG did. To me, that’s unacceptable, as this is a videogame and story should be tied to gameplay, smartly integrating both. In fact, my ideal story mode is the one in GGXX, with a story for each character, voiced dialogues and a mix of insightful advancements and silly stuff, plus a lot of battles with interesting conditions (tied to the story) like stricter time limits, opponent powered up, character poisoned, etc.
I’ve read lots of good things about MKX’s storytelling, too, but I haven’t experienced it myself. However, the fact that you don’t get to play as whoever you want (you can’t even play as some of the characters at all, in fact?) isn’t my cup of tea. It has some advantages, like not forcing some battles just for the sake of having some on each character, and a more cohesive narration plus a defined ending, but I don’t know if that’s enough to me.
As for SFV, I hope it tells the story as close to GGXX’s approach as possible, but I’ll be content if each character has their bit of protagonism and there is a strong narration in between battles, even if it’s just still pictures with voices (pictures which btw I really like, unlike it seems the majority).
The GGXX would be cool but I hated the presentation of it. It was just talking heads. It should have been an audio book the way they did it. Since NPCs will likely be involved in the story going the BB route would be the way to go.
I think the MKX presentation where you can’t decide who you play as (though this could be flexible in some situations) is actually really good for a couple reasons. It not only lets you present a more coherent narrative but it also lets new players experience a WIDE variety of characters which lets them understand the game a bit more and grow more familiar with it. That familiarity can go a long way.
I don’t think The Mortal Kombat style of predetermined characters is the right way. You mostly play as the hero characters (exceptions - Scorpion, Smoke, Cyrax, D’Vorah, Kotal Kahn) in the story, while, for example, in BlazBlue you are given the entire cast to play with and each and every single one of them have their own sidestories and branching out storylines based on how you progress through the mode and win/lose certain battles
I rather have one chorent story where you smoothly transition from one character to another to make the story go forward. And you get to see what the other characters are about.
I think a key word is consistency and coherence. I would love to play all the characters if possible for the story mode to see from their perspectives, to see how their journey goes, and what happen to them. But I don’t want any “possible” endings of what would happen if they were victorious throughout then entire session. I want to know what REALLY happened. I wanna know whats cannon. That’s why i like the MKX story approach because of it’s coherence and consistency. But the problem is that you can’t play with everyone.
Looking at the main menu screen, you notice that there isn’t an Arcade mode anymore. So i’m considering the possibility that Capcom combined Arcade mode with story mode, meaning they tell one cohesive story but from the pov of all characters?
For me the recent MK series nailed it. They created the optimal blueprint for story telling in a fighting game.
One coherent, cohesive, and linear story mode that tells the entire story. Chaptered in a way that forces the player to learn as many characters as possible to finish. You get to know most everyone, their backstory, their relations, and their motivations really easily. The issue of the villains not getting the spotlight can easily be solved with clever writing (MKvDC or was it Injustice who had playable villains in their story mode IIRC). This type of story mode allows the writers to weave together this epic that captures the spirit of the era the fighting game is set it. It allows more easily for specific overarching themes to be explored together just like in a movie. We also won’t have to argue about what is and isn’t canon as much since most of it is laid out in front of you.
MKX then had the arcade mode individual stories that took place in the aftermath of the main story mode. It was a great bonus for players and a nice supplement for the story mode, introducing possible scenarios for what will happen to the universe after.
It was all very simple and elegant IMO, and more than any other game before it, it made the fighting game’s story relevant in the mainstream.
Yeah, it seems very likely that Arcade and Story Mode are merged now. Initially, I thought there’d be two separate modes for both. Just about every Anime/NRS game does a good job in implementing both Arcade and Story Mode, but Capcom has never did a Story Mode in SF. My guess is they probably thought only one mode would be necessary this time around.
Either way, I’d love if Story Mode allowed you to utilize every character in the game. That’s a perfect way of telling a *complete *story. I liked SF4’s prologues and endings, but it was a clusterfuck trying to understand who actually fought the real Seth or what actually happened.
Now I’m just wondering if Street Fighter V’s story is tournament based. With how everything *seems *to be connected this time around, I doubt it’ll be in the form of everyone doing their own thing like Alpha/3rd Strike. I kinda have a feeling there’ll be a tournament presence, but that it’ll simply be a smokescreen for everything else that’s taking place behind the scenes.
yeah I agree with this. speaking of which I loath Kung Jin play story mode in MKX just show me his character is just major douchbag whose better off dead. how I rank the new characters in MKX from best to worst
1 D’Vorah
2 Kotal Khan
3 Erron Black
4 Cassie Cage
5 Takeda
6 Kung Jin
7 Jaqui Briggs
8 Ferra/Torr
why are they last because they are contribute nothing to MKX’s story they’re just there.
Erron was just a whipping boy lol. He contributed nothing in the main story, then may or may not have done something canon from the arcade mode. Most if not all of that stuff from arcade mode seemed like it couldn’t have happened though. The presentation format was nice (though if characters are going to be playable, you would hope to play more), but the MKX story was a huge letdown. MK9’s was infinitely better.
I feel some the arcade mode stuff happened. The ones that don’t contradict the game’s main story. Like Cassie’s ending where she kills Shujinko. The framing of it occurs directly after the story mode ending so it’s likely canon. Kano’s ending also likely canon as it serves to introduce his son who will be in the next game. Some ladder endings provide the character’s origin like Erron Black.
That can’t be right. Usually MOST of endings (specifically MK endings) are not canon. I mean, they still need to redo the entire Deadly Alliance and Deception arc (as NRS has been steadily retconning the events of the original games up until now and MKX is pretty much a retelling of MK4’s Shinnok plot)
