But at least the first two tried to have unique bosses and endings for everyone, while in Alpha 3 everyone’s final boss and ending deals with Bison. (except for Evil Ryu). I know Bison is supposed to be virtually immortal, but over 30 characters laying claim to finishing him does sound like an alternate continuity.
I’m gonna play Devil’s advocate and say that they were trying to reimagine the SF2 final showdown with Shadaloo experience, and that Bison did in fact fight several people before the end. Many (or most even) endings in Alpha 3 have actually happened canonically speaking. The one part that did not happen in anyone’s ending is the part regarding who killed Bison and who destroyed the base - We learned in SF4 that it was Bison who did both. Besides this one specific detail, Alpha 3 endings generally happened, and their characters’ respective stories in SF4 progress directly in many cases from their Alpha 3 appearance (not SF2).
There are exceptions for example like Ken and Chun-Li, where their SF2 endings can be a sequel to their Alpha 3 endings, their SF4 stories continue from both their Alpha 3 and SF2 endings. Another exception is Rose whose SF4 story continues from what more accurately seems to be her Alpha1 ending (with one or two details borrowed from her SFA3 ending).
But seriously, if you disregard this one specific detail which has been retconned in all endings as of SF4, the endings of Alpha 3 make more sense and are much more cohesive in their narrative.
I actually think Guy makes sense as logical story bridge for the Mad Gear people into SFV. Have him and Rose in the next wave of DLC/part of the Bison/Shadaloo story and then sprinkle in associated Mad Gear folk that tie in with him.
I am not a fan of that version of Goutetsu (first seenin Akuma’s A1 ending I believe). The Alpha Generations version is forever my favorite, and best captures the strict uber master archetype who may have a hidden soft bone in his body (kinda like Oro or Gen) IMO.
See I actually prefer that version over the generic Alpha Generations version. Canon Goutetsu looks like a warrior and a bad-ass one at that…so the fact that he flips the script and goes with the kind-hearted Gouken makes that all the more poignant. Goutetsu is a warrior…but a progressive one with honor and foresight. Generations is just too generic. Nothing memorable about him.
The label above chart (in the red box) translates to “New Character Compatibility Chart”, and it seems to be relevant to the returning Alpha characters and the new SFV characters. The red and blue arrows connecting them are labeled; Yes, and No. There also seem to be SFA3 sprites of R.Mika, and Karin’s butler scattered around the page.
Waging to bet that’s Karin in alt clothing, like the art of Chun in her officer’s uniform. There is a sprite of her butler directly under the photo.
To be fair, even though I much prefer the Bengus version of Goutetsu (the one pictured above), Alpha Generations version is far from a “generic” warrior. His design, like most of the Ansatsuken warriors, is partially based on a real fighter who founded his own school of the martial arts.
The Viper Aftermath OVA which is part of the SF4 story supplemental material recreates the Alpha 3 ending scenario meticulously. In it they show the final battle setting and proceed to show Bison ‘exploding’ when cornered. Following this, we see him in the Psycho Drive chamber regenerating before the base is struck by the orbital Psycho Cannon - Effectively it was a self-destruction of the base and all that was in it, or rather that was what it appeared to be. Viper comments on this event that it was a ‘suicidal explosion’.
That would be amazing seeing that each game doesn’t really have a conclusive end to what happened. Even though SFIV tried to do SF2 some justice as to what happened right before the Bison bomb, much is still left in limbo. February 16th feels too stinkin long to wait… sigh
So, as you can see, the AF’s version is closer to the Generations anime rather than Akuma’s ending from Alpha
To me, the Alpha version looks goofy with that bandana, and the rest of his looks just remind me of Gen in a shirtless uniform
It also doesn’t help that the art for Goutetsu from SF5’s book above looks like Gouken with a staff
The bandana is really out of place, and without it he’s just Gouken. What makes AG Goutetsu so cool is that the guy is that he is so short and petite. I’m a sucker for the old and frail looking Kung Fu masters that can wipe the floor with you. This is partly why I love Oro’s character so much. Oro is more lighthearted and laidback than Goutetsu though.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Goutetsu’s Alpha design at first, but I guess it grew on me when I read Akuma Origins. I really like the way he was written and drawn in that story. Both designs are good to me.
