The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

Here’s a theory about Chun-Li and her place in the story mode:

Ususally, the character story modes were to introduce us to the characters and their personalities, styles, and motivations for fighting. And more times than not, they are used to set up the plot for the upcoming cinematic story mode expansion. But here is an interesting thought I had after watching the story mode clips like for the 20th time.

What Chun-Li’s character story takes place AFTER the Cinematic story mode?

Here me out on this. Firstly, let’s take a look at Chun-Li’s drive to fight. Ever since she first appeared in the Street Fighter franchise, Chun-Li’s motivation for fighting was fueled by revenge, revenge, REVENGE. M. Bison kills her father, and she won’t stop until she brings him to justice and takes down the entire Shadaloo organization. And it wasn’t until SFIII where she finds a new purpose for fighting: to teach and protect younger generations as a motherly figure.

Chun-Li is arguably the most iconic female character in the franchise, the poster girl and the main heroine in the series. But lets take a look at some of her previous battles in the previous games: She gets her ass handed to her by Bison in Alpha. In SFII, even though her ending states that she’s avenged her father’s death, she clearly isn’t the one who kills him. SFIV, we dive a lot more into her with the SFIV Aftermath Short (Including one aftermath Short about her Post-SFII) . But in SF Ties that bind, she is reduced to a minor role. And let’s not forget that she gets her ass handed to her by Juri in the Juri OVA. Finally, in SFIII, while get gets added late, her ending clearly reveals her new motivation on fighting.

Now we will be finding out what will happen in the cinematic expansion what takes place between SFIV and SFIII. But all we do know is that Chun-Li accomplishes two major things:

  1. According to Urien in SFIII, Chun-Li’s “legendary legs were said to have destroyed that organization”. I would assume that Urien is refering “that organization” as Shadaloo. So if that were the case, some time during the Cinematic expansion, Chun-Li will find a way to not only save the world from those dreaded black moons, but will also bring down Shadaloo as well. (Whether or not she finally beats up Bison’s ass for killing her father will remain to be seen)
  2. She takes in Li-Fen as her own ad raises her like a mother. Now in her character story, We just see Li-Fen already living with Chun-Li for some time now. And in SFIII, she rescues her from Urien.

Now as mentioned, Chun-Li takes in Li-Fen. But we don’t know what happens before that. Like how did the two meet? What made Chun-Li decide to adopt her, versus helping Li-Fen find her own family (assuming she has one, and they are still alive)? It just seems so random to give Chun-li this girl for her to take care of with out a reason, especially since she’s been on the path of Justice for the longest time. So my theory is that this story mode is going to be a huge character development for Chun-Li as she goes from avenging her father’s death, to motherly role to Li-Fen.

Now earlier, I hypothesized that Chun-Li’s character story takes place after the story mode. The reasoning for me thinking this is because when Combofiend and Mike Ross played the story mode demo at E3, in one of the early scenes, we see Li-Fen on the Shadaloo base, eventually being rescued by Rashid. Rashid saves her, but I was surprised how very little of her and her background was mentioned. (Probably because Rashid was more concerned finding his friend, but I digress). It’s interesting to me that Li-Fen doesn’t mention anything about her family, or where she was taken from, or even Chun-Li at all. Like for instance, if a child gets kidnapped, the first person they want to be back with would be their parents. If Li-Fen didn’t have any, then maybe she’d would want to get back to the closest figure to a mother that she has: Chun-Li. And yet, in that short encounter, there is no mention of her.

Fast forward to Chun-Li’s first scene: Shadaloo strikes, and both she and Guile are tasked with a mission to investigate. Now assuming that this is all real time, and if Chun-Li was taking care of Li-Fen, then she probably would’ve been more emotionally distressed from the fact that the organization that killed her father now has Li-Fen in their grasp. But when we first see Chun-Li in that scene, she’s looking calm, confident, and determined. Fast forward to later on down the road before they meet Charlie Nash (more specifically, the scene where Chun-li was injured in her last fight and was sitting against a car/van/truck, whatever it was). Chun-Li says “There’s a group of computer hackers who’ve gone missing. The ages, genders and nationalities all vary, including some very young ones.” That would be a pretty good time to mention someone as important as Li-Fen, but once again, no mention of her names comes out.

So could it be that both Chun-Li and Li-Fen have not met yet? And that they are destined to find each other some time down the road in the Cinematic Expansion? What will happen that will make Chun-Li change her path from justice to caring for kids?

With that being said, this upcoming cinematic story mode probably grants Chun-Li the biggest spotlight on her character in a long time. She will get a chance to display her might as we’ll see how she takes down Shadaloo. And we’ll also see an impact in her character development as she takes in Li-Fen.

Here is what I think (and want the most) of what will happen:

Chun-Li has a chance to destroy Bison’s Black Moon machine and end Shadaloo once and for all. But Li-Fen is being used as a hostage or something which puts her life in danger. Chun-Li is engaged in a fierce battle with Bison with him gaining the upper hand. As a beaten Chun-Li looks in the eyes of a scared Li-Fen, she gets flashbacks of her when she was a kid, when she received the news that her father would never come back, that look of fear, sadness, anger… and a new purpose to protect Li-Fen from going through what she has gone through, gives Chun-li the power she needs to defeat Bison once and for all. But when faced with a decision on whether to execute Bison, or to save Li-Fen, she chooses the later. While she saves the little girl, Bison is gone (probably to get wrecked by Nash on)

After that, with no one to look after the little girl, Chun-li takes her in. And thus, we lead back to her character story.

So that’s my theory. Chun-Li’s character story takes place after the cinematic story because her cinematic story will showcase both her destroying Shadaloo, as well as shift her character into the motherly protector she is in SFIII.

Well, I AM a lore fan (albeit Casual). What kind of fan (major or minor) would I be if I wasn’t naturally curious about stuff? Lol.

Why don’t Shadaloo mention the ThunderFoot tribe name directly? Both the T.Hawk and Arroyo Hawk bios mentioned the tribe name after all. I’m sure Shadaloo is very familiar with the name.

So what do you make of the “This one seems to be a descendant of a tribe of some sort…?” part exactly?

I wonder why her memory was specifically affected more so than any of the other Dolls.

So do you think that happened off-screen?
This seems pretty out-of-left-field at the moment. Capcom really should expand on it!

Sounds cool.
With Juli’s dislike being Narrow Spaces, does that mean she’s Claustrophobic?
That is quite a doozy of a dislike, ala Storm from X-Men.

Yeah.

Nearly finished with the Alpha 3 endings, guys. That shit was long super long.

Btw, while doing these particular endings, I couldn’t help but remember how badass I thought this Image of Bison was:

It’s like…you just pissed off Bison and now you have no choice but to accept your fate. The best he could do is give you a job mopping floors at Shadaloo HQ. The worst he could do is introduce you to the Psycho Crusher.

Because they want to keep the subject as ambiguous as possible. This whole T.Hawk chasing Juli is supposed to be an ongoing meme imo. Kinda like Mario chasing Princess Peach at this point, but way less obscure by way of fandom.

Not sure exactly. The best I can make out of it is that she’s actually a descendant of the tribe, which would be weird because later in the article it discredits that theory stating she’s originally from Germany, but studies abroad eventually leaving Germany on her own. She may have been adopted by the Thunderfoot tribe like the Udon comic suggests, but they want to keep this subject ambiguous. So unfortunately for T. Hawk (Mario)

*“The princess is in another castle” *…so to speak.

Well, being that she might have escaped in the past. All the Dolls are essentially brainwashed, but only Juli at this point has been stated as having her memory wiped on several occasions. Which means she’s not only brainwashed, but that’s litterally all she knows at this point and she has no personality of her own. Which is probably why she’s the plainest of the Dolls now in terms of appearance, and why she needs extra consultation from the other Dolls.

More than likely.

Yes, she hates being placed in a cramped space, so that basically means she’s Claustrophobic.

I really don’t know for sure what’s going on in Alpha 3, and I don’t think Capcom does either.

Also didn’t know if anyone would be interested, but if you want to train like a true Street Fighter they’re releasing training gear based on the World Warriors.

authentic weighted training gear!

Is that an authentic ass-training Bison dildo?

Yep thats exactly what it is.

I don’t think this kind of thing has legs long-term (at least not for Street Fighter). I don’t think you can stretch it out indefinitely without it getting “tiring” after a while (if it hasn’t already). It’s going to have to come to a head at some point.

What are the chances Juli (and for that matter Juni) would get German accents (for English VA)? I’d LOVE to see that!

That’s not necessarily true, she has the whole “She thinks about matters rationally,
but in some cases a part of her seems ruthless” thing going on!

Personally, I find the first part boring but the second part more interesting. I looked up more about the term “ruthless” and there’s quite a lot of synonyms about it, including one named cold-hearted. I remember that from the Udon World Warrior Encyclopedia and the old Street Fighter Plot Canon Guide, the “Cold-Hearted Assassin Doll”…or something like that.

Do you think this rationally/ruthless mix made up some part (or even all) of her original personality when she was with T.Hawk? I mean you see her with a smile on her face in T.Hawk’s SSF4 Prologue but it barely shows anything.

I’d find it kinda funny if Julia was like this with him originally (the “ruthless” part really). That’s the kind of woman he loves, lol.

…What is it about the brainwashing/programming/conditioning that causes it to fail with her?

I wonder how she even gets her memories back all the time! I’d like to see some of her escape attempts if there are any!

I also remember something about how she’s not as slavishly loyal as Juni was (at the time) in WW Encyclopedia and the old Plot Guide. You’d think Shadaloo would have fixed that a long time ago without having to re-brainwash her over and over again.

Well I guess the story thread knows what to get Daemos for Christmas this year…

I dunno if buying him an ingrid doll is the best idea…

**Old stuff **

Live reaction from Daemos…

**I think it’s safe to say that Ryu’s storyline in SFA3 isn’t canon anymore. Sagat was still a Shadaloo boss during SF2 and still bitter about the scar Ryu left on his chest, as seen in the C. Viper Aftermath trailer. Initially, it was stated that Sagat defected from Shadaloo in SFA3, in addition to developing a newfound respect for Ryu, when Bison used Psycho Power to control Ryu’s mind. So here are the new canon’s main changes:

  1. Charlie gets shot and killed by a helicopter.

  2. Rose fights Bison and kills his original body.

  3. There are still several participants remaining in the SF II tournament: Guile, Chun-Li, Cammy, Ken, and Ryu. But with the knowledge of Shadaloo’s involvement in the tournament, all five participants, along with the military, launch a surprise attack against Vega, Balrog, Bison, Sagat, and Shadaloo’s soldiers. This surprise attack interrupts the tournament. During the chaos, Bison self-destructs, destroying himself and Shadaloo’s secret base. Since the tournament never had a chance to conclude, there is no winner. At this time, Sagat is still with Shadaloo and still bitter about his loss to Ryu, so Ryu’s SFA3 storyline couldn’t have happened.

  4. The dolls are still working for Shadaloo at the time of the SSF IV Juri OVA. So Cammy couldn’t have freed them from Bison’s control prior to SSF IV (thus, the dolls never fought Bison). So the only canon parts of Cammy’s SFA3 storyline can only be Dhalsim making her self-aware, her fighting Vega, and Vega depositing her unconscious body on the doorstep of Delta Red (she’s probably unconscious because Vega defeated her and knocked her out. It’s conjecture, but it’s the only explanation that makes sense in the new canon).

That’s about it.**

Hugo is german but he doesn’t have an accent, so I’d say the chance is close to zero

Can you imagine her poking Ken’s face with that?

Tháng Tám

She fights with a spear! Isn’t it unfair?
