The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

I always though of her fighting like Cham Cham of Samurai Spirits or Choi and Chang of CVS2

The original Elena

.

Great to see you back my friend!

You can catch us up on all the juicy Doll details from now right?

So her name and nationality changed? In what language does Tháng Tám mean August?

Thang Tam is probably her original name.

Holy crap it did!?!

Tháng Tám means August in Vietnamese, which is sloppily transliterated to Santamu for SF.

She’s supposed to be from Vietnam.

Oh cool, I had no clue. It does make sense though, but maybe Thantam would be more legit translation

Well, I’m not really back until Wednesday, but yes, more or less

No, her name never changed. I’m the one who can’t stick the widely used romanizations because they are simply incorrect. Tháng Tám is August in Vietnamese, as her nationality always has been… until today.
And in Vietnamese you write tháng tám; NOT santamu (nor thantam, for that matter), that doesn’t make sense and comes only from a wrong transliteration of Japanese katakana.
And yes, they wrote Ethiopia and not Vietnam. Good job, Capcom. Now I’m back to my work, laughing both at the past debate about firearms and the one about ethnicity. Often I think it’s not worth to argue about these things, particularly if the creators so blatantly contradict themselves in the first place…

She’s presented as Ethiopian, but was supposed to be Vietnamese… it becomes even more fucked up when you realise her pet golden lion tamarin is a new world monkey endemic to Brazil…

“Santamu” (サンタム) actually doesn’t mean anything. It should be “Tantamu” (タンタム) which would be the Japanese pronunciation of *tháng tám *

What a mess. They could at least get the nationalities right… you had one job Capcom!

Tháng Tám reminds me Jade from MK, which is good.

T. Hawk calls an eagle after winning a round. By the looks of it, Tháng attracts a monkey.

The Ethiopia change is … odd. Why would her name be in Vietamese then? Does Shadowloo not like African languages?

She’s good, easy one of the best 3

So Nakayama tweeted about this whole Santamu and Vietnam business.
@Miðgarðsorm can you give me a second opinion on this because it seems he totally intended to change her country of origin to Ethiopian from Vietnamese

This is honestly even worse than the whole Julia and Juli Germany and Mexico thing if this is true.

It’s official: Aprile is her rival.

They can’t even get stereotypes right and you’re asking for nationality

Also this.
Vietnamese doesn’t have the English th sound. Its th is an aspirated t. I guess the Japanese at Capcom saw how Vietnamese was written and incorrectly assumed the pronounciation would follow the English one, as they ALWAYS do with ANY language they aren’t familiar with.

ROTFL.
"I think there are various rumors circulating about Tháng Tám’s birthplace; I asked the creator and he says it’s not Vietnam"
And he couldn’t ask him before?
I’m laughing because it’s better than crying. That’s ridiculous.

OMG what??? That’s what I thought it said but getting to see it confirmed is just priceless.

So shouldn’t her name technically be something in Ethiopian?

Well it’s a win for me, I always had a thing for Ethiopian women
