The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

Then that means that there’s going to be 12 flashback scenes for the returning characters in the vanilla story mode. This was already inferred to when the transcripts for the different characters story modes were leaked a few months back. It turned out that the Ryu and Ken scene was indeed a flashback, which could be the case for Nash vs Bison, and Chun vs Birdie.

Whoops, thanks for the heads up, the formatting’s super crapped up on that. Fixed it now hah

Do you think that the story mode is gonna retell the entire SF story from Alpha to SFV? Also with an additional current plot to bring some significance to the new characters?

That would certainly clear a lot of things up (and retcon the shit out of everything again) if it was one as one long cohesive flashback sequence. Although you should consider that SF4 pretty much retold the entire SF story up until the SIN tournament. It wasn’t presented in the best way though.

I think key points will definitely revisited. For example the Charlie Nash story will likely be retold and reintroduced, and by association other elements and characters from the past will be revisited. I just want my Alpha Bison costume already.

Sorry we couldn’t act as forum-based Cammy rule34 for you.

I think it will tell what happened before SFV and after SFIII, with some flashbacks explaining the background of each character.

Frankly I would love if it presented SFA-SF5 (or even III) as a cohesive, coherent story much like MK9 did for the MK series.

I don’t think they have the balls to go past 3 in the story. Hopefully if SF5 is an immense success, we will get an SF6 that takes place a few years after 3S. The possibility for story telling is limitless then!

The question is - will Capcom ever have enough balls to actually go beyond SF3’s era and tell what happened afterwards?

Because I think what they might be doing here is tell how the story developed going from SF4 into SF3, essentially retconning the New Generation to possibly Third Strike arc, and be done with moving the story forward for some time, instead going back into the past and filling in the blanks there.

Metal Gear Solid can be seen as an example of such an approach, where the series reached a point where you pretty much can’t move forward after MGS4 (though even by the end of SF3 3S Ryu isn’t Gouken-age yet so he could still serve as the protagonist), and instead they started covering the past with MGS Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, and recently The Phantom Pain

Well there was a big jump in narrative between SF2 and SF3 that Capcom is now filling it up with material. So people can play catch up and give a fuck about the SF3 cast and story (But also because it is less risky business-wise).

But SF3 can’t be the end the way MGS4 is. The characters are still young, and even if they weren’t Street Fighters can fight well into their centennial if Oro is anything to go by. An SF6, especially one that is a big jump after SF3 (3-5 years at least), still has a lot to explore. There are many questions that remained unanswered.

Capcom said Ryu’s bearded costume is canon. I believe it’s how he is after training with Oro.

Oro’s training of Ryu is a 15 year journey by his own estimate. Hot Ryu is just too young to be Ryu Final. However, I think you are on to something and Hot Ryu is how he looks like after training in the mountains all alone (after SF4 probably). I imagine they will take a page from HNK by having the SF5 story open with a bearded Ryu the way a bearded Kenshiro appeared after a notable absence. We still don’t know how long after SF4 this game takes place.

Someone said, and I agree, that SFV will go from before SFIII to SFIII itself, retconning whatver is needed to include SFIII in SFV story. Probably not all SFIII, just NG/SI, but I think the introduction of the SFIII characters will lead to SFIII’s story naturally.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is the last Street Fighter game I’d be pulling story elements from.

The endings were all ridiculous and the results of laziness/maxing out the CPS2’s ROM memory.

My takeaway from Street Figher Alpha 3 is: uh, Charlie shot Vega (Dictator) with the machinegun of his jet, dropped a nuke on the pyschodrive, even though Charlie is supposed to have died in Alpha. Every other character had some ridiculous ending of killing Dictator even if the character, story wise has nothing to do with him, it was silly and lazy, a far cry from the gorgeous and enlightening endings in Alpha 2.

Hot Ryu is canon? I wanna believe it, but could you provide me a link so I can read it for myself?

Also, in regards to @Daemos last comment, maybe bearded Ryu isn’t done with his training with Oro, and SFV probably picks up right in the middle of it? He does look more muscular in this alt. compared to other costumes.

Haha , sure he is. Come on, it’s just Ryu with a beard and his shirt off. Unless you want to suggest he’s never grown a beard his entire career nor taken his shirt off!

I would suggest that most alternate costumes are “canon”, I mean, you don’t think these characters wear the same thing every day do you. Ok with Ryu mayyybe that could be argued lol. Obviously some suits are not canon such as Zangief’s metalic/anime robot ones (then again, who knows, maybe Gief is into cosplay?;).

Honestly I would like bearded Ryu to be the “Unlocked Potential Ryu” since he looks like a younger version of Gouken. Also, with Ken bringing back his ponytail from his Alpha days, it would just seem odd for them to have to revert back to their traditional designs going forward into the story. Typically, redesigns of characters tend to signify a stories progression, or regression, as in terms of a prequel.

It’s canon in the sense that the battle costumes will be used in story mode according to Capcom. The way Alpha Ryu and Alpha Ken are canonical appearances for the character. Capcom has hinted characters will change appearance within the story mode and it will all be explained. These costumes specifically would be considered canon.

Unless SFV is going to pull a time skip into 5+ years into the future, I sincerely doubt we will see a Ryu under Oro’s mentorship. From what we know, SF5 takes place in the 3 years between SF4 and SF3:NG/2i. I agree with @“Time Mage” that at best it will lead directly into and possibly overlap/overwrite parts of NG/2i.
