It’s funny how the more we dive deep into this bios the more convoluted the whole Sagat vs Ryu stuff becomes

Basically from what I can gather Ryu and Ken’s styles were originally just plain old fighting styles with flashy looking specials. Then SF2 comes around and their fighting styles are still the run of the mill styles, but Ryu is being noted as scarring Sagat with one of his flashy signature moves, for seemingly no reason other than it’s an insanely strong technique. Then Akuma comes around, and to go along with his Murderous Intent Ryu’s style was revealed (retconned) to being a descendant of a Satsujiken or “killing fist”, which brings the Sagat scarring incident into a better perspective.

but the main question still remains - did it happen because of Ryu’s temporary anger from the loss and dipping into SnH inside him, or did it happen because Ryu deviced to use the most forbidden technique of his style to ensure his victory over Sagat?

The bios don’t seem to mention at all that Sagat offered Ryu his help to stand up after their battle though

Both.

Ryu gave into his anger and wanted to win at all costs…doing so meant that when he launched a shoryuken he launched a metsu shoryuken, a highly forbidden technique. It’s a combination of things.

Also, Sagat didn’t offer his hand. I believe bakfromon (major kudos to him) and I debunked that a couple pages back by dissecting the translation used to originally infer that. The “hand” Sagat was referring to was the “fist” (technique) that Ryu used. Sagat became determined to create his own powerful fist (technique) to match/combat Ryu’s (his development of the Tiger Uppercut post SF1)

Goutetsu? Meh. Hate the stick. He should be the epitome of unarmed combat…not a staff user. Get the Doll in there for that.

The rest (Adon, Sagat, etc) are same-old same-old and boring…plus the art style is unflattering to them.

It almost seems like neither originally. Ryu would just beat Sagat unexpectedly with a Shoryu that scars him. There’s no details on the fight, or evidence as to who was winning or losing, just the outcome. For all we know Ryu could’ve whooped his ass thoroughly or vice verse, although we can highly assume it should have been a close match given Sagat’s and Ryu’s reputation, alls we can do is assume what happened with the information given. As of right now Ryu vs Sagat in SF1 has about as much detail as SF2 plot as a whole, and for all we know the intro to the SF2 animated movie could be the accurate depiction.

Ryu’s fellow training partner from youth and eternal rival. The U.S Martial Arts Champion, her has won at a multitude of events including the World Battle Tournament Tour. His wife is named Eliza.

Fighting Style

The fighting style Ken has gained is similar to Ryu’s, given the fact that they trained under the same master (Gouken). However there are some subtle differences in the nature of techniques, such as flashy hell cartwheels and a flaming Shoryuken, an underlying sense of the urge to fight overflows out of Ken.

To be more accurate the “hand” Sagat is referring to is his own. He “would place into his (own) hand a fist” that would match the technique that scarred him. He’s literally treating his fist as a weapon, and saying he’s going to pick up another one to match the weapon that scarred him

Retsu, when not chosen as a successor, became a monk to curb the violence in his heart that was fed by the SnH that Goutetsu had successfully mastered.

I don’t think this is the case. I remember reading a blog that had stated they had sources that Goutetsu had been a Chinese immigrant in game canon.

The master of the masters was only presented once in the game series, that was in the credits of Street Fighter Zero. He was depicted as an elderly man with a long white beard and a headband. Goutetsu, as he was named, was a Chinese immigrant that had refined a version of the assassin’s fist and had turned it into a fighting form. He was passing this on to two Japanese disciples.

I always thought this was an interesting narrative even though I never seen any in game proof to support the fact, but the way his design looks now there’s no mistaking a more Chinese origin rather a than Japanese one.

As said, this was entirely my head-canon. While running SF as a tabletop game I had to backfill A LOT of backstory since SF is fairly light on world-building.

Wow…that 2nd design for Gen’s disciple with the open-top and scarred up chest is the only good design of the lot…but it’s REALLY quite decent. This guy should get a second chance to be in the game. I like him. Plus if he fights like Gen? YES PLEASE!
