From what I understand about the Japanese language is the the sentence structure is configured so the verbs are at the end of the sentence, while English sentence configuration will place them in the middle or beginning but never the end, so for example.
Subject: Struggle
Noun: Time
Verb: Passed
Subject: Rain
Noun: Sagat
Verb: Standing
So when I look at this sentence I already know that the verb is at the end, which it shouldn’t be in English. So to make sense of this sentence I would have to say.
Or basically
I know a lot of my translations are far from perfect, but I try to remember that when translating something the trick is to remember the sentence structure first before trying to make sense of it. So if drunk Yoda were to say; "Yoda you don’t like speak" I could interpret him meaning I don’t like him talking or speaking, but in reality he’s just saying; “You don’t speak like Yoda”
Given the context of the whole script I would find it pretty odd for Sagat to mention the small detail about picking Ryu up, given the fact most of the article is exclusively about Sagat and how he handles his defeat to develop a new technique. The way the plot guides sentences read sound like they just translated the words, but left the foreign sentence structure intact which messes up the meaning of what’s being presented to an English reader.
Sharon Vs Viper Vs Q would be a dream come true for me. Battle of the secret agents or whatever Q is.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the rival/boss dialogue parts of the story and think perhaps the Japanese dialogue might clear some things up.
The first one I’m thinking of is Oro. Does he actually compare Gill to Ryu? I feel like that would at least tell us he fought Ryu during the SF3 tournament and used him as a measuring stick because he was the strongest guy there. Dialogue from the English version:
When Akuma is staring at the moon during his Alpha 2 ending, he says “Worthy foes have challenged me” as it flashes between Bison, Gen, and Ryu. We know he’s fought Gen and Ryu, but when would he have fought Bison? As far as we know, his Alpha ending never took place because it’d mean Bison would’ve been history. Outside of that, was there any chance that these two have fought some time before or during Alpha? The ending:
There’s Ryu’s fight with Akuma in Second Impact. I remember reading that Ryu said he’ll show Akuma that he’s overcome the Satsui no Hado. This wasn’t in the English dialogue:
Lastly, there’s Oro’s fight with Akuma in Third Strike. Oro seems impressed with his level of power and the idea of Satsui no Hado, but doesn’t seem too impressed by Akuma’s “master of fists” title and challenges him. Now there’s no way of telling how the battle went down, but I’m guessing they were roughly equal in power:
What I thought was interesting was seeing that Oro apparently has some special dialogue with Akuma in Second Impact. I had no idea about that. Whenever your character had to fight Akuma in the English version of Second Impact, their only response to his intervention is “Who are you?”, and you get the generic “I’m power made flesh” quote from Akuma. Everyone seems to have unique dialogue with Akuma in the Japanese version.
Whenever you have the time, bak, could you take a look at this? That would be awesome. It seems like there’s so much more stuff in these games compared to what we got in the English release.
I really do like the idea of Viper always being part of SF whether being a playable character, or in the background being the official co-narrator of the series (Rose would be the other official SF narrator in my ideal scenario).
@“Doctrine Dark” About the Akuma vs Oro dialogue, it’s not really that much different from the localized versions but it is kinda distinct. It’s basically how the bio I posted about him is described.
While I’m not gonna post the actual text at this time it basically reads like this…
Oro: “Ohooooo long time no see… ummm, who are you again?”
Akuma: “I am the Extreme Master of Fists…you have only begun to know, how helpless you truly are…”
Also, Ryu’s response to Akuma in SF3SI is…
“I’m…I’m to look beyond the Surge of Murderous Intent”
I believe that Oro is just that good/expert/wise (probably the best in the world at that) to straight see the potential of a fighter.
Like it ever happen for anime heroes i believe Ryu pushed to his extreme limits can/will defeat Gill, but as normal everyday level Gill probably kick everyone’s ass if he’s not in his chill “impress me and i let you win” mood
That’s something different.
In SF2, you can choose between all eight fighters and the player fighting all of them is just the arcade mode. But on a story level, the tournament of course doesn’t work in the way that the winner has fought all the other 15 opponents. So, you can invent some tournament schedule, for example:
Ryu won against Ken.
Chun Li won against Honda.
Guile won against Zangief.
etc.
Since all players are selectable, all matchups are possible.
But in SF1, you cannot choose the fighters. Which means the tournament is told through Ryu’s eyes only. Which means that all of the fighters are the ones that he went through. So, Mike eliminating Joe is nonsense because in this case, Joe shouldn’t have been in the game at all since you only play Ryu’s path.
I never understood this whole giving Ryu a hand: If that was the case, then why is Sagat so eager for a rematch? In this case, he has won the tournament. It doesn’t matter what Ryu does to him when the match is already over.
And Sagat’s revenge isn’t even just him being pissed because Ryuscarred him. No, he wants a clear rematch to prove that he’s the better fighter. Why? He hasn’t lost the fight. He wasn’t defeated. Ryu attacked him outside of the battle.
Apart from this being a dick thing to do for Ryu, it makes no sense that Sagat is shown dethroned and preparing for a clear rematch.
But if the Metsu Sho-Ryu-Ken was just the last desperation attack that Ryu unleashed when Sagat was just about to deal the final blow, then everything makes sense: Ryu had a very close victory and Sagat indeed lost the fight.
In the game, when you play with Akuma, your second to last opponent is always M. Bison. So, this is what the ending refers to. Likewise, Ryu’s head in this ending probably doesn’t reference Ryu’s boss battle against Akuma, but the fact that Ryu is the secret mid-boss/rival in Akuma’s playthrough. So, yeah, this part of the ending probably never happened in the storyline.
I’d like to see the source to this one too. Because I think that these two being Joe and Mike is nonsense. To me, the blond guy is obviously supposed to be Cody from “Final Fight”: Same clothes, same serious facial expression. Remember that Joe was basically the Dee Jay of SF1, always smiling, even in battle. It just doesn’t fit that this bitter, determined fighter in the SF2 intro is supposed to be Joe. But he matches Cody pretty well.
This seems to revolve around Sagat’s development of the Tiger Uppercut.
“I will not lose to that man twice! I will develop a fist with the same crushing power as the technique that scarred my chest!”
We know Sagat worked to develop the Tiger Uppercut as a counter-part to the SRK and this is actually part of his story arc throughout Alpha where he has the Tiger Blow instead and it is still being refined.
This would make the most sense as to how we should interpret the meaning of the sentence. Basically “I won’t lose twice! I’ll make my own version of the move that scarred me!” more or less.
Heh, kinda; I took part of it, and to make things a bit more striking, I merged some background elements from an edited X-men vs Street Fighter stage (the sky of the stage with the police before you fall into the sewer), the citscape of Spider-man’s Msh stage and part of the sky from the X-men COTA Psylocke stage (at the highest point the elevator reaches).
I keep telling ya, akuma doesn’t do anything. He’s like the guy that flexes in front of the mirror. Has it…but can’t do anything with it.
Seriously bro…find.a.damn.hobby.
“I must have a BATTLE TO THE DEATH!!!”
“Yes yes we know…you’ve been saying that for the last 23 years…maybe longer. But you haven’t done dick about it. You keep going on and on like a broken record.”
“I AM DEATH!!!”
“Look, we fear death, we’re human alright? We love the thrill of battle as well…but we actually do something about it.”
“…”
“Don’t give me that look. I hear tekken has problems…they got “battle to the deaths.” strong guys too. Family issues…not sure if it’s your thing though.”
“Strong…opponents.”
“Oh my god…please…ok you know what? Just go…not even the devil gene could attract you.”
“Where’d he go? Oh…he actually left…finally, maybe now we can finish this story and get some ACTUAL progression.”
