We’ll never know if the change would have been for the worst since they never went through with it.
Thing is we never see her transition into that role. SFV gives Li-Fen a formal introduction but we don’t know her circumstances and how she came under Chun’s care. An abrupt change of status quo is not development.
Which is why I think SFV would be the perfect opportunity to show that transition. There are so many reason why Chun-li takes in Li-Fen as her own. I know her character story failed to give us any kind of backstory for her. But maybe (and this is just me speculating) I think Chun-Li sees a little bit of herself in Li-Fen. Maybe her family was killed (unintentionally) by Shadaloo, leaving her orphaned. Because Chun-Li never got to experience a full father/daughter relationship, and since we know nothing about Chun-li’s mother, I feel Chun-Li took in Li-Fen to give her the parenting that Chun-li never got to fully experience.
I don’t think it’s gonna be something as simple as in “Oh, I just defeated Shadaloo, daddy’s death has been avenged, what am I gonna do now? I KNOW! It’s take care of kids”, nothing like that. But maybe this could be the closing chapter in Chun-Li’s quest for vengeance against Shadaloo. But when one story closes, another one opens for new possibilities.
Well, yeah, not all the time.
SF Alpha Ending: She was a rookie detective going up against the Mighty M. Bison. Never stood a chance. rather surprising how she came out of that alive.
SF Alpha movie: Easily beaten by a jacked freak who’s power level was just WAY above hers.
SFII Movie: it was a brutal fight on both ends receiving and giving
Juri OVA: Juri was a new fighter who caught Chun-Li off guard when she was more concerned about the safety for the kid than her own.
I think SFV is where they are going to actually show more of Chun-li winning fights in the story (hopefully a lot if she is the main character in the story and if she is the “Legendary legs” who ends shdaloo.)
I’m calling it. Final battle (or second to last battle) Chun-Li v. M. Bison. Chun-Li gets beaten up before summoning the last of her will to defeat Bison once and for all. (Kind of like the Cassie cage v. Corrupted Shinnok ending)
Those are all of Fang’s new upgrades to the Dolls. He had to take them all on a shopping spree to cheer them up after they got their asses handed to them by Juri.
Shoulda just taken them out for fries and burgers. Let them pour on that salt. Shoula listened to their venting. Get to know them. Isn’t that what your supposed to do?
That scarring REALLY reminds me of the damage an improper shoryuken caused to Ryu in the Street Fighter II manga by Kanzaki. His usage of it damaged his own arm.
But, that would be a good story, so we can bet that Capcom discarded it quickly if it ever crossed their minds by accident.
I fear that Capcom is more comfortable with having her play a support role (and they’ll make sure she gets her ass kicked whenever she tries to do something?). We have barely seen her in the story trailer and game intro, and her prologue doesn’t seem to be hyping anything to come.
PS: also she didn’t perform too well in Birdie’s story, so that’s not a good start.
Now that Shadow Charlie is canon, I wonder… does this mean Dark Sakura, Shadow Lady, Cyber Akuma, and Mech Zangief will become canon as well instead of just alternate costumes? LOL
I’m curious what Bengus says in the interview. His art is REALLY uneven in the prologues. Chun Li’s is the worst offender. His first few drawings of Chun and Li-Fen are great. Then you get that awful Chun and Vega drawing…WTF
The difference between Charlie in this game and actual Shadow Charlie is this though…there’s no NORMAL Charlie anymore.
I don’t actually have a problem with characters changing like that. What I have a problem with is alternate versions of the same character that make one character take up multiple spots on the roster, and some of those versions aren’t even real in the story.
If Capcom has such a boner for Evil Ryu, then they should fucking make Ryu evil already. The problem is when you have Ryu AND Evil Ryu on the roster, and Evil Ryu doesn’t even actually exist.
Also, I feel like those kinds of characters are a relic of the past. Those kinds of things are more fitting for alt costumes these days than actual separate characters.
