I’ve been thinking about this, but now I’m pretty sure that Charlie waking up in story mode isn’t the first time he’s been brought back. His clothing is specifically shown to be different from the flashback, the bg is shown to be the New Zealand area from the intro, he seems really calm around Helen while reclining in a GRAVE, but note what she says: “You had broken bones everywhere. At first…we thought you were already dead.” and when she asks him what happened, he flashes back to the meeting with Guile, and later in Russia she asks him about his fight with Bison like it’s two different events.
Talking about broken bones would seem to be weird and not in the right priority for someone who was shot with .50 cal bullets, stabbed by Bison and thrown off a waterfall. I get the vibe that he was brought back, had a field test, got injured and or lost again, but was mostly a blank slate at the time.
My guess was originally Marz. Because all of the Dolls were kidnapped, and Marz is a computer nerd, like Rashid.
Problem with that theory is that all of the Dolls were kidnapped years ago. And Rashid’s friend hasn’t been missing for that long.
It’s not great. But you are doing a shit job of remembering if you think SF4’s was better.
I’m not even sure Nash is aware that she has an organization. He seems to have just woken up in a coffin. And she seems to be hiding the fact that they are obviously the ones that revived him.
Well, obviously not the bullets, but falling off a waterfall will sure as shit cause a ton of broken bones.
The way I look at Ryu’s story as of this point is; now that Ryu knows that Gouken is alive, and Gouken knows Ryu is struggling with SnH, instead of trying to sway him away from it and just teach him exclusively about his power of Nothingness, Gouken is going to use the SnH as a learning experience for Ryu to bring him up to par to himself.
The thing about Gouken that people tend to forget is that even though he is a master of Power of Nothingness, he also trained in SnH with Goutetsu and had to find his own way afterwards. After he found his own way of the Hado, he taught Ryu and Ken nothing about SnH and only about Mu, so Ryu has learned to tap into SnH all on his own without Gouken being able to answer him about it or aid him in learning it (because of Gouki “killing” him).
So in order for Ryu to best learn how to fully quell the SnH and use his potential is not to shield him from SnH, but force him to learn from it properly while not having to be constantly interrupted and harassed by Gouki. So instead of Ryu constantly struggling to find an answer on his own, he now has a cheat sheet, in the form of Gouken, to all the answers he needs to know about SnH that he hasn’t gotten. While in the process of learning from it with Gouken in an controlled environment free from Gouki’s presence. Of course being the type of master that he is, Gouken doesn’t want to give Ryu the full answer, but merely guide him on the right path through his hardships. Being that the SnH is a new hardship for Ryu from Gouken’s perspective, he wants to train him for it the best he can.
I had pretty much figured that at this point any SF story placed before SF3 would probably have Ryu struggling with SnH in some form or manner unfortunately. Although with him learning Denjin attacks opposed to Metsu attacks gives us a clue that he’s at the cross roads between confused SF4 Ryu and confident steadfast SF3 Ryu.
I’m mixed on the story so far. Withholding judgement until we get the cinematic story DLC though.
I like that Ryu is training with Gouken again but I’m kinda getting tired of the “Ryu must fight the SnH” story. 4 seemed to imply the end of it. 5 really needs to be the final closure on that plot point.
REALLY want more Nash info. Specifically about his revival and ties to Gill’s organization.
Whoa, nice find about Vega and what he considers truly beautiful! I always thought it was just the broad definition of “I think yer pritty tee hee”, but the inclusion of past experiences and struggles is interesting. Man, I really hope by the end of SF5’s life cycle, everyone gets a nice, healthy shot of character development. (Especially you Balrog, I want you to be more than “I got paid!”).
Well, with that kid Balrog rescued, I’m sure there’s a good chance of that happening.
As for Vega, I really wanted his character to be fleshed out more for a long time. There’s a lot about him that should be explored (his dual-persona and past missions, for example), yet I feel that Capcom is scared to develop his character. Why is that? Is it because there are certain aspects of his life that involved sleeping with female targets or something?
I can’t believe I’m actually using one of Vasili’s old statements, but in the context of SFV it seem’s like this is becoming the case for Ryu in a sense.
Ignoring the statements about the ki colors of Denjin, which have been retconned as of SF4 leading up to SF5, it seems that Ryu’s use in SnH is functioning in a way as to have Ryu holding back but still drawing force from it.
What made me think this was the case is that during Laura’s fight with Ryu he admits he had been using the SnH, but he had not been under it’s influence, and both of them even joke and take it lightheartedly.
This goes along with the point I had made a few pages back about how Ryu was using SnH and Mu simultaneously during the SF4 anime trailer and TTTB.
I’m just thinking that this whole story of Ryu and SnH isn’t so much about shunning himself from it as it is knowing how to truly control and refine SnH through Mu.
The break down on Vega is good. He’s a very weird, disturbed dude and he’s always found things that are…autonomous to be abhorrent and without “beauty”. “Grace” would also fall into that category. It’s all very crude and without style. Vega, in a VERY warped way, likes humanity…the UGLY side of humanity specifically. Suffering, pain and the human response to it. In a way, he never moved past the suffering his mother endured and has tied female suffering into his concept of beauty. Endurance in the face of pain, to him, seems to be the most beautiful thing…especially when wrapped in a female package. Insane guy for sure.
Hell yeah to that Vega article. It is really interesting how he views beauty, and you get even more material to work with in his SF4/SFV winquotes:
Spoiler
SF4
Guile: "Your moves are beautiful. Too bad I cannot say the same about the rest of you."
Rose: "Your beauty reminds me of the last gasp of a flame before it is extinguished…"
Sakura: “It would be a shame to destroy a rose before it has fully bloomed…”
SSF4 and on
Viper: "You fight for money? Tell me, my dear, just what beauty is there in that?"
E. Ryu: "I simply cannot bear to see you crumble beneath your own power."
Ibuki: "I was impressed with your looks, but your fighting disappointed, my dear."
Juri: "You, my dear, are the superlative personification of evil beauty itself."
Makoto: "You are a diamond in the rough, my dear. Sadly, it may be too late to polish you"
Sakura: "Flowers in bloom are beautiful. Pity they don´t make it to adulthood."
Decapre: "No beauty can exist in a doll with no heart."
Elena: "I adore natural beauty. What a shame we can’t spend time together."
Poison: “Your beauty is indeed ravishing, but it only lasted an instant.”
SFV
Cammy: "Your delusions, your despair… They all belong to me now!"
Chun-Li: "Bathing in your blood will be the best beauty treatment of all!"
Karin: "Your undefiled integrity is a fresh flavor for me to relish!"
Laura: "What a pity. You look good, but you do not understand true beauty."
Mika: “Even your death throes lack grace. Such an obnoxious tone.”
Going by these quotes, Vega’s definition of beauty covers physical attractiveness, grace/speed, and emotional expressiveness. Thus, he spares Chun and Cammy because he wants them to feel and experience their tragedy, and killing them would only silence that emotion. He shows a disdain for tomboyish girls like Makoto, Laura, and Mika, which likely comes from their focus on power/strength rather than grace/speed like the styles of Chun, Cammy, and Karin.
And I’d count on Balrog’s story to explain him and Ed for the timeline between SF4 and SFV. Unlike Vega and Bison, he doesn’t really have much to do with the Alpha storyline aside from being Bison’s hired muscle. Although, they did retcon Chun’s interactions with Bison in Alpha 1/2 to happening with Vega, so maybe Balrog might get some flashbacks after all.
Sorry to interrupt the awesome Vega discussion again but I just find it funny Fang’s fancy but archaic way of writing the character of “2” seems to be running in to the same problem with people who are fluent in Chinese/ Japanese. I like the running gag, I can see Fang reacting in a very snarky manner when hearing comments like this.
Karin to Fang: “You say you’re one of the Four Kings, yet you can’t even write “two” in Chinese properly.” (Ho ho ho ho ho!!!)
Speaking of Vega, if the full CGI trailer is anything to go by and he and Dhalsim really do battle in the story, who do you think’ll win? My vote is on it being a draw.
I wonder if Shadaloo would send Vega after Dhalsim in order to take out the possibility of him effecting the other Dolls brainwashing like he did to Cammy?
Well he’s not made out of rubber like Luffy, so I’d say he’s just as susceptible to Vega’s blades as much as any other Street Fighter aside from those in the higher tier (Oro, Dictator, etc.). Boxer would definitely be a win for him.
This seems likely. Either that, or he helps the heroes take on Shadoloo and decides to take down Vega.
I know I said this a lot in the past, but I really want more closure on the relationship between Cammy and Vega, as they have quite a bit of history with each other. Part of me really wants to see Vega confessing his actual feelings to Cammy, as it was strongly hinted in Alpha 3 that he actually cares about her (considering how he was hesitating in his ending).
I posted a very similar theory 6 days ago on page 55. But I didn’t go as far with the mother side of things, mainly because that part of the character’s history is buried in history and is yet to be addressed in the modern era. Vega finds suffering beauty, he feeds on negative energy just not in a metaphysical sense like Bison’s psycho power. He relishes the fear, anguish, and pain of others. He’s basically a physical and emotional sadist. The dolls feel nothing, therefore they are ugly.
Necalli is not human, or at least no longer is.
I’m not trying to fit everything in too hard though, because there is continuity between the two games and Capcom is paying attention.
Rashid meets Ryu about 2 weeks after the fall of SIN
Ryu’s battle and subsequent encounter with his master happens sometime after the fall of SIN.
Put two and two together. They are obviously happening in the same exact time period.
There never was any indication that Ryu’s seal was permanent. This was assumed by most of us then because SF3 was after SF4, and we did not know of an SF5. It isn’t even a retcon for Capcom to say that Ryu’s seal was a temporary ‘stfu’ performed by Gouken.
