M’kay, so I played through all the 16 character stories today, I guess I’ll write up some impressions
Ryu:
Really nothing much of importance was told in his character story. It’s the same old shit about Satsui no Hado within him and how he’s afraid it might consume him, etc, etc. Boring.
Ken:
We’ve got to see young Mel, so that’s nice. Also Ken looks weird in an evening suit, but I guess it’s mostly because I’m not used to seeing him like that. Maybe that could become his future alt? Other than that, nothing special
Chun:
I think it’s interesting how we see Vega not killing Chun when he had the opportunity. Why is that? Was it pity because of her father? Was it a Cat and Mouse type of a game for him? Chun was also shown as kind of a bitch here, too arrogant
Cammy:
This is probably the most interesting one among all.
One - we find about this “Operation C.H.A.I.N.S.” that FANG speaks of. Is that the Bison’s plan that involves those floating EMP spheres? Or is it related to the Dolls?
Two - we get to see Juni as a normal human being, so that’s very cool. Obviously Cammy wants to protect her at all costs as she failed to protect Decapre
Three - Cammy x Juni. SHIPPING THIS SHIT SO HARD
Four - Juri is here! I wonder how did she track Cammy? Also what is she doing out there watching them like that? I suppose she’s a free agent now since SIN is no more, but her appearance is definitely a pleasant surprise
Charlie/Nash:
Really nothing special other than it seems like this Helen character is going to play a major role in Nash’s actions in the story. But who the hell is she exactly? Is the with Illuminati? Is she with Bison? How did she find Charlie? Hell, how does she even know about him? A rather intriguing woman. Also what the fuck up is with Ed having Psycho Power!? Guess the kid that Balrog stole from SIN base really is indeed special…
But at the end there, Charlie seemed pretty damn ruthless. The “I’m not gonna let anybody stop me” line IMO implies he won’t give a damn about his actions as long as it gets him closer to Bison to kill him…
Bison
I wonder what the FANG’s syndicate was about in the first place. Are they just assassin’s so Bison saw their usefullness? Also it was pretty fucking stupid of them to “ambush” Bison like that, niggas clearly didn’t know what they were doing, and perished for that mistake. FANG, however, might actually be quite a strong fighter if he could withstand Bison’s attacks. It’ also interesting how Bison let FANG not only live, but even join Shadaloo, so I guess this shows how Bison really doesn’t give a shit even if you decide to betray him as long as you’re useful, probably one of the reasons Vega is still in the ranks despite being a pretty shady guy. Also new C. Viper design! I wonder how she managed to sneak into the base unnoticed, but it’s nevertheless pretty cool Capcom kept her in at least as a cameo
Vega:
Really fucking lame. I mean, Vega doesn’t seem to like FANG, but that’s pretty much it. What’s interesting though is FANG mentioning “New and improved Dolls”. Does he mean “New” as in “revampled” etc or did Shadaloo actually capture NEW girls beside the previous…12, I think? (well, now 10 I suppose).
Also the masked Shadaloo officer shown behind Vega might play into the story, he has too much of a unique outfit to not be of a special person, Capcom would’ve given him a regular Shadaloo uniform instead
Birdie:
Is him leaving Shadaloo on his own a retcon in this game? It’s really weird how he just jumped off the fucking rooftop of a Shadaloo base like that, and even more strange that he survived
Karin:
She’s basically a female Ryu. Searching for strong opponents, looking for challenge, etc. Also she’s fucking amazing. 10/10 gurl. Also fuck Schoolgirl Sakura.
Did they make Sakura/Karin rivalry a more of a friendly one? They seemed to be like Ryu and Ken there rather than two characters outright hating each other. It would show quite a maturity progress for both of them.
Also does Azam have his own tutoria/teaching video series about how to be a good Butler? LMAO
Mika:
Mika’s story is really nothing much… just admiring Gief the entire time and stuff. Zangief also probably ships Mika x Laura. I’m really surprised to see however the level of strength Mika has. I mean, resisting a whole big fucking bear!? That’s pretty rad. He got rekt by Gief though.
*inb4 Calling PETA
Gief:
Mostly same as Mika, BUT - I liked two moments.
One - him reading a wrestling magazine with Mika’s Alpha 3 art on the cover
and Second - him being friends with Azam. I wonder how did the two get to meet each other? Seems they have quite a deep of a story going there. Would really love to learn more about that
Dhalsim:
I like that Dhalsim is the ultimate teacher of Yoga willing to spread the knowledge about the art. I actually love his character in this game in general, he’s like the all-knowing master. It was also pretty damn cool to see Oro! I guess Dhalsim and Oro have respect towards each other because they both practice the ancient arts and they are both teachers. But that cop learning how to breathe fire in such a short time is bullshit lol
Rashid:
Now, THIS is the interesting part. Rashid mentioned his “Friend” being kidnapped by Shadaloo, but while Azam is present. So I guess either Shadaloo captures both Azam AND that friend, or Rashid’s friend is a different person altogether. I’m still hoping that it’s one of the Dolls, hence how Rashid learned the Shadaloo pose he does as his victory animation. Rashid also seems like a pretty cool guy, and I’m glad he’s on the hero team. Seeing him fighting FANG probably implies that he’s connected to Rashid’s friend, which also leads me to believe it’s one of the Dolls, or someone who serves under Shadaloo
Laura:
I seriously don’t know what the fuck is this character doing in this game. She’s just there, an obvious shoe-in. Nevermind the fact that her story is an exact replica of Makoto - promoting her matrial arts by competing against strong opponents and letting everybody know how cool Matsuda Jiujitsu is. Makoto also inteded to use the SF4 tournament for promoting Rindoukan Karate
FANG:
Doesn’t show much except from letting us see some of the scenes from Bison’s story using a different perspective. Still wondering though why did the Nguuhao clan decide to overthrow Bison like that. They couldn’t possibly be this fucking stupid, right?
Necalli:
I… honestly don’t know what to say. The way they showed Necalli “consuming” powerful souls is not something you’d usually see in a Street Fighter game. Like it’s taken straight out of some anime series, and also kinda reminds me of Spider-Man comics’ Symbiotes in a sense that they overwhelm the body of other person. And also the ending scene of his character story is probably the first chapter of the Cinematic Story we’re getting in June. Since Necalli’s artwork has shown the India stage, I suppose that’s where Necalli resides/is in a slumber, and that’s where he starts wreaking havoc when shit hits the fan and it’s possible Bison is responsible for waking Necalli up
Overall, I DID like the mode, but I have some complaints as well
- some of the artwork is downright garbage. It’s okay for the most part and I appciate some of the nods to older character endings from previous games like the Charlie and Ken stories
- You can’t lose in the story battles. No matter what, you need to win to move the story forward. They don’t show you an alternate outcome of the battle. BlazBlue, for example, might alter the entire character sidestory should you lose just one and worst case - it won’t let you open the True Ending even if you complete all the sidestories there
- Lots of character stories in SF5 overlap. I.e. Cammy and Vega, or Ryu and Rashid, or Mika and Zangief
- The stories are very short. They did pour in some interesting story moments that are hinting at what we’ll be seeing in the cinematic story mode come June, but just a couple of cutscenes? Come on, they don’t even tell you much about certain characters at all, and actually might confuse you futther (Necalli’s story is basically one big WTF moment)
The ingame animations done speficially for the Story mode are damn nice though
