Nope, already got it. I realized I forgot to order when I was going through the box.
I need some info on how to change out springs in competition/p360s. Can anyone make a quick tutorial? :wonder:
Competitions have 4 screws at the base of the stick, next to the microswitches. Unscrew those and you’ll see the spring.
I dunno about P360s. I’ve never opened one up.
If you are making a really small order that will fit in an envelope as opposed to a USPS Priority box tell Chad to ship it first class instead. Then shipping will only be like $2.
tl613, I have a favor to ask of you. Are the measurements of the IL Eurojoystick’s base different from the old, IL-made Happ Competition joystick’s?
You mean as far as mounting them? If so, I have 2 X-Arcade solo blank panels which come routed for Happ stick mounting. The IL’s fit just fine in there. The only real difference I noticed was the mounting screw holes seemed to be a little off, but I get them in anyway. It probably has more to do with where X-Arcade decided to drill the holes though.
If that isn’t what you need to know give me some specifics on what you need and I’ll try my best to get it.
May you please compare the microswitch mountings and gate of the sticks?
I hate to bump an old thread like this, but after reading through the info, I need to change an order I made asap. I ordered the Happ Comp, but after reading this, it seems to have been a very bad choice.
So, for 2d Fighters, which joystick would be the best? I’m also not a fan of ball tops, so wanting a bat top. Out of these on Lizard Lick, which is the best for 2d? I also like a tight spring (which was my original intent of going with the Happ Comp), so are any of the Seimitsu’s or Sanwa’s able to have a new spring?
Thanks in advance.
first post has a lot of great info
thanks guys
The best made/designed joysticks are Sanwa JLF or Seimitsu LS-32 with the JLF having a higher build quality as Sanwa sticks usually do (Sanwa and Taeyoung joysticks have the highest build quality of any manufacturers. Sanwa and IL/Happ Convex buttons are the best made buttons with Sanwas being much more sensitive than Happs much less sturdy). I personally cannot guarantee the quality of any other stick other than these joysticks and Korean Taeyoung Fantas but the aforementioned Japanese joysticks are usually considered better for 2D games (Fantas are best for Tekken and other 3D fighters). The Japanese joystick most similar to American ones is probably the Sanwa JLW-UM with the circular restricting gate but the JLF is considered to be a more reliable joystick. I myself use a JLF w/ square gate for fighting games.
If you really want an American-style joystick, then get either an IL Eurojoystick+hard spring (available on lizardlick’s site under happ competition parts) or a P360 and hope the particular one you bought is not fucked up. I seriously recommend switching to Japanese sticks though as Happ constantly fucks their joysticks up. Again, the most similar to an American-style stick is r the aforementioned Sanwa JLW-UM with GT-O circular restricting gate. The Sanwa JLW-UM’s mounting plate is compatible with Happ drill holes and the joystick can be correctly mounted on surfaces up to 1/2" thick which means that you should be able to install it on a MAS without much trouble. I have not tried this myself as the only American style stick I own is this old one wired for SNES that I modded with Happ Competition buttons and a Happ Competition stick from the late 90s outfitted with new microswitches/spring.
I have some questions of my own:
-
Does an IL Eurojoystick attached to a Happ Chinese mounting plate with sanded microswitches have a circular feeling?
-
Will swapping out the microswitches on the Happ Super with different brands (omron, honeywell, matsushita, LG, etc.) improve performance?
-
Am I correct that a Sanwa JLW-UM will mount correctly on a MAS with little to no modification?
Thank you, EvilSamurai.
I also posted in the Sanwa/Seimitsu thread, thinking this may have been the incorrect one.
So the Sanwa JLF-TP-8T with a bat top should be ok? I have no idea what in the world “gates” are. Although I read that circular are best for 2d? So much info to learn here.
Gates are the same as restrictors. Basically, it’s the feel you get when you rotate the stick. Sanwa JLFs and Seimitsu LS-32s will give you a square feeling since their gates are square. Competitions will give more of a circular feeling.
Btw, there is no “best” for 2d. It’s preference. Find out what you like and stick with it.
Thanks, TingBoy.
I ended up ordering the LS-32. I honestly have no idea on where to try out the difference between Sanwa/Seimitsu/Happ/iL without ordering all of them. Not sure, but I think the only arcade close to me is Dave and Busters. Their stuff is so run down, I would hate to base anything off of them.
The last time I actually played in an arcade was around 96 lol. So won’t need any readjusting.
Thanks for the info/help guys!
Can anyone tell me about the Wico Optical 360 joystick?
Specifically, what is the difference between it and a good Happ Perfect 360 joystick?
Assuming the P360 suffers from none of the infamous flaws that have plagued it over the years, how is it different from the original Wico 360?
Bat? Shaft? Spring? Acutator? Restrictor? Diodes?
I’ve never actually heard a flat-out comparison of the two. Which is generally considered better? ie. Would the Marvel crowd be playing on Wico instead if they were still available?
Do the comp sticks originally come with the hard spring or am I gonna have to buy that separately and put it in? if so, what is that stiffness difference between the two, and is there any inherent difference for having a hard spring? Not just for American sticks, for all.
Everyone would be playing on the wicho sticks. It’s the internal actual PCB components of the wicho stick that are superior, the Happ sticks have problems with registering inputs (diodes) after a while and they have washer/actuator problems later down on the line too. The bat, shaft, spring and stuff like that I think are pretty much the same.
The standard medium spring in Comp sticks causes them to refract and activate microswitches you did not intend to activate when you release it from the maximum throw distance. The Sanwa JLF w/ octagonal gate also has this problem. The hard spring for the competition and the standard square gate for the JLF prevent this.
Oh right, I did notice the “Bouncing” and just thought it was due to the manufacturing itself. Thanks, though I do admit that the bounce made superjumps in Marvel a whole lot quicker and easier.
I wish I had ordered the hard spring when i got mine, now i gotta take this thing apart again.
Thanks a lot for the reply, dude. I actually just snagged a few of them and I’m pretty excited. Silly because it’s on reputation alone; as far as I know, I’ve never actually used one before!
From what little I’ve read and seen about them, the bat on the Wico shaft looks slightly shorter to me, but Google told me the Happ shafts are interchangeable, so that’s cool news.
