The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

Pretty shitty horror film, cost a lot for entry, plot kind of stood still after the church scene, then later the monster ended up on a stretcher popping spawns out of her mouth between her legs, eh, out of a 1 - 3048, I’d give it a whack as hell.

Anyone else disappointed with all the PG-13 horror movie shit that has been in theaters lately? I going to have to rely on my movie collection to make it a good movie month.

I hated this for ages. In their rush to get the movie viewed by as many people as possible, they alienate the fans of horror who can handle gore and nudity.

Speaking of, V/H/S is an excellent source of tits

This just in:

A. Movie studios like money.

B. This is also closely related to the glut of “genre” horror pictures made on a shoestring budget that cater only to hardcore horrorheads, many of whom don’t even seem to care about movies but just want to see more of Villain X doing his thing. Which is exactly what they get.

I look at a movie like Alien vs Predator. The originals were R rated movies, and made money, and are considered good movies. When somebody dies, it had great impact and was memorable.

Could you imagine the chest burster scene back in Alien being PG-13?

I remember seeing Jeepers Creepers 2, and realized it was essentially PG-13 Jaws with wings. The Creeper would swoop down and snatch a boy (coincidentally, the director of both Jeepers Creepers is a known pedophile), and then take off. Gone was the stitched up corpse wall that made the first movie epic. Gone were the gruesome kills. Just off screen nonsense that killed the movie.

Man the first Jeepers Creepers fucked with em so much when i first saw it, used to help my dad with this Janitorial job he did in these big ass factories and I kept thinking I saw him everytwhere, didn’t help they would usually be empty of everyone but me and my dad and dark as fuck.

Quick question for any Hellraiser heads, did you prefer Pinhead and the Cenobites being rule abiding villians or the chaos seeking maniacs? Personally I prefered the law like approach, made them interesting in comparision ot guys like Freddy.

Lately as in the last six years? Yeah more or less, some are ok (Cry_Wolf I liked) but overall yeah they are passable.

First Jeepers Creepers I liked, since he was all stalking and doing creepy shit. Then the sequel was like “Hey you remember this dude? OH LOOK HE’S FUCKING FLYING AND THROWING SHURIKENS, fun right?!?!” So yeah. But they make money with that crowd and help keep the genre alive so I can’t hate that much.

I like the Cenobites as being the punishers and judge/jury types instead of outright slasher stuff. It has more depth and you never know which side they will teeter toward based on what is going on.

I prefer for Pinhead and his crew to be the judgement (like AYO said). it adds a lot more depth to what their system is about. I have been reading the comics but seem to can’t find anything past issue #5. anyone know where to get em? Also I am hearing mixed things about Sinister, I still want to see it but am on the fence about it.

Side note: I heard that Konami asked Hideo Kojima to make the next Silent Hill game, and I hope he accepts because after SH3 I was pretty much done with the series.
Anyone Going to see Silent Hill 3D?

Speaking of shitty horror movies, it seems The Collector 2 is finally making it’s way out. I liked the first one, it was dirty, gritty, and aside from the ridiculous Saw-like plot holes it had it’s own thing going. Seems now it’s gotten the full Hollywood makeover and is actually being billed as “The next Saw!” Red flags raised, and it’s painfully obvious nobody will even know about part 1.

While I’m at it, fuck the Don’t be Afraid of the Dark remake also.

Just saw the prequel to “The Thing”.

Eh…it was ok, somewhat decent at times. Thought all that stuff with the spaceship was WASTED though. Like what the hell was that spiffy, morphing pixel screen thingy? Was hoping it was going to show something or reveal a bit of the Things origins. At LEAST confirm audience suspicions that the spacecraft was prisoner/quarantine transport of some sort, and the signal triggered after it exited the ship was actually a warning.

Speaking of which, Linkara at TGWTG’s recent comic adaptation review on this was pretty neat.

Edit: And i hate to sound like a primitive, violent, unevolved human, etc. However, if something like this were to be discovered…F*ck scientific advancement. Mankind is low-tier right now regarding alien threats and is in no position to handle that with kid gloves and risk a world wide plague. Perhaps in the Star Trek era when they’ve got technology and genetic understanding out da ass, until then…OMG KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Although one would hope if something like this were to happen in real life, that those involved with have the sense to go all AREA-51 on that, with full government personnel having that crap on 110.00% lock down at all times. Not this clumsy, disorganized group of scientific dolts, who are so concerned with getting the credit for the discovery to bother keeping a tight lid on things.

As much as I like classic horrors, there were some that had hilarious corny effects. Was never upset by them because they gave me a good laugh.

I’m very much unitiated in horror flicks but recently I’ve gotten the urge to educate myself by watching more of this stuff. I’ve seen most of the really obvious ones like The Exorcist, Paranormal Activity, Alien etc. What I’m most interested in at the moment is good ghost movies and space stuff (The first half of Event Horizon was awesome). Any recommendations?

Not a lot of good Ghost flicks. I guess you could check out the more popular films like The Shining and Poltergeist. Then there’s The Haunting (The original, avoid the remake), Session 9, and House by the Cemetery.

The chest-burst scene would fly in a PG-13 movie, these days. Supernatural is TV-14, and they sneak in some gruesome stuff.

Jeepers Creepers 2. The best part about that was KNOWING about that pedophile then seeing the scene with all the shirtless high school boys sunning themselves .

Yeah Season Seven and Eight especially of Supernatural has a lot more gore being turned in. I enjoyed it.

I don’t think House by the Cemetery really counts as a Ghost story, more of a Zombie/Mad Scientist thing in weird ass Italian lol.

Good Ghost flicks: The Haunting, The Changeling, Ringu (OG), Shutter (OG), Pulse (OG), Poltergeist, The Others, The Innkeepers, House, The Fog, Session 9, The Legend of Hell House, Ju-On The Grudge (OG). Japanese in general has a TON of Ghost stories of various quality.

Some I kind of enjoyed but not really top quality is like Ghost Adventures, Pulse and The Gravedancers.

Some other Asian one, old and well done that was a big epic that I am forgetting.

Big Daddy don’t hate on old school Horror lol. House on Haunted Hill was fun, dated but cool

I really love Vincent Price though.

anyone go out and see Sinister?

Yeah definitely worth seeing, although you definitely have to suspend your disbelief like Insidious. The story is clever but easy to predict and they still spell it all out for you. The home movies are genuinely unsettling but there are a few unneeded jump out scares (the last 20 seconds of the movie in particular). If you liked Hollywood horror-lite type stuff, you’ll like Sinister

Any of you Horror guys watch James Rofle’s stuff?

Like Cinemassacre? Yeah, I find him more enjoyable when he isn’t going crazy on curse words like in AVGN. His 80’s tribute series is ok so far.

You know what’s Buuuuuuuuulllllshiiiit? The fact that James Rolfe hasn’t made more horror stuff in years.
