Anyone seeing Silent Hill next week? I actually liked the first one, for a video game to movie it was pretty good, but that’s probably why non Silent Hill fans thought it was shit. Not expecting much from part 2, as long as Pyramid Head gets decent screen time I’ll consider the free ticket as time not wasted at the very least.
I thought the first Silent Hill had a lot going for it, but it was ultimately too incohesive and required too much exposition to really be effective as horror. If you weren’t familiar with the games, it was probably incomprehensible altogether.
Exactly. As a SH fan I was really into it, but my friends bombarded me with 100 questions after it was over. Things I just took for granted or knew about made zero sense to them, and even after explaining it they were scratching their heads and asking why all that stuff wasn’t explained in the movie.
I’ll have to check that out. Looks rather “meh”, though, to be honest.
I have seen a bunch of horror films in my time (I used to be afraid of them but now find them hilarious), but the only ones on the top of my head right now are Suicide Club, EXTE, Battle Royale, Audition, Naked Blood, Bane, Creep, Carrie, The Burning, and Death Bell. Ju-On The Grudge was a very entertaining movie. I’ll have to watch that with my friends later today.
Alice Sweet Alice can be described as “dirty” Not sure how to explain it exactly, just the way the buildings look and how nonchalant the murder scenes are filmed. Kinda reminds me of Don’t Look Now but with more death scenes. If you like that movie you’ll definitely like this one.
I haven’t seen that one, so I will have to check.
Now, this should be a horror movie.

I will be seeing Silent Hill when it comes out. I have been a SH fan since 2 and I think using the chick from 3 will probably make it more “appealing” to the casual audience. I hope Pyramid Head gets some decent screen time and maybe gets at least one more kill in this movie. Also being a fan of the games, i would’t mind seeing the other Alyssa from SH3. I think if they pulled it off right, it could be quite dope. Speaking of SH, have any of you seen the SH haunted house at Universal studios? That looks quite dope. I think Rob Zombie was the creative director of the project.

In other stuff, I watched the movie Excision the other day. I am not too sure how I feel about it because it was supposed be some sort of horror comedy, but it wasn’t funny or scary, it just had some gross parts in it. Also I watched Grave Encounters 2 (yes they made a sequel) and it could have been good, but then they started adding so much flaming hot bs to it, that it was worse than the first one. Anyway I still need to watch Session 9, if anyone has seen it, let me know if its worth watching.
And if you haven’t seen Pontypool, I highly recommend that movie, it takes the zombie/infected genre and adds a clever twist to it. i really enjoyed that movie.
Hi, I was wondering if someone could recommend some good horror movies to start with. I have only seen things like Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc. but I want to get more into horror films and was wondering where a good place to start would be.
That depends on what you are looking for.If you want gore,or ghost stories, or home invasions, there is so much stuff to see. I guess I can give a short list of stuff I thought was good:
The Loved Ones
Martyrs
Eden Lake (not really horror though, but good)
VHS
Frontiers
The Descent
The Orphanage
Pontypool
[REC] 1+2 (3 is cool but isn’t as good as the first two)
28 Days Later
That is a shortlist, but thosemovies are allpretty good, so I suggest checking them out.I hope it helps.
For zombie movies:
Dawn of the Dead (Romero version) and Zombie (Lucio Fulci version)
Other stuff off the top of my head:
V/H/S
Strangers
Audition
The Thing (John Carpenter)
Phantasm 1
Videodrome
High Tension
Mother’s Day (80’s version)
Thanks, i’ll start watching.
Thank you as well, I feel like I have a lot to catch up on.
Phantasm, Nightmare on Elm Street, Any of the Romero Zombie films before 2005, Return of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Universal Monster films, The Blob (Classic or Remake), any pre-1998 John Carpenter film. Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, Creepshow, Hellraiser, From Dusk 'Til Dawn, The Omen, Psycho (OG),
There is more but I am feeling scatter brain(ed) today. These are generally seen as classic films of the genre and easy to get into. As someone newer to Horror, these would be a better stepping stone then some other films mentioned which take a certain mindset. Good lists though.
For people that have Netflix: A batch of Mario Bava films were added to Instant Watch, including one of my favorite films and something most fans needs to see, Black Sunday. His pictures have great atmosphere and use of lighting, while generally telling different stories from his peers. Bava rules.
They also have The Innkeepers up for those who haven’t seen it. Another slow burn Ti West film with character drama, but pretty awesome if you like that kind of thing.
Evil Dead trailer got leaked but they are shutting it down quick like, see if I can find other means to see it later. People saying it looks good…surprisingly.
Also James Wan’s new film is getting good early reviews, early test screenings are extremely positive. http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3197884/james-wans-summer-blockbuster-the-conjuring-testing-through-the-roof/
I enjoyed his film work. Saw (first only, and the one he was involved in), Dead Silence (My favorite by him, thing oozes atmosphere), and Insidious (Probably his weakest effort so far, but still head and shoulders above other films).
Playlist for a shitload of Italian horror trailers:
Haven’t seen that in years, thanks for the heads up, definitely gonna watch it on my next day off.
Arctic, be sure to check out Mark of the Devil if you can also. I’d link the trailer but even the youtube version has nudity in it. A witch hunt movie with good atmosphere and some brutal scenes including a disturbing tongue ripping and plenty of torture scenes using medieval devices.
If you’re looking for witch hunter movies I’d avoid Mark of the Devil and go right to Witchfinder General. It has Vincent Price, come on it’s a no-brainer.
I remember reading they weren’t going to do cgi as much as possible so it felt more like the first film, its great I really like it as a prequel.
There’s just too much cgi. The creature effects of the first one were just awesome.

okay thanks, i’ll watch these before I get into the ones you mentioned that take a certain mindset to watch. My tolerance for certain horror movies isn’t very high, like Hostel I thought was a little messed up lol, but maybe its just cause I haven’t seen that many horror movies yet.
Just got done with Dawn of The Dead, loved it. The ending was awesome, is Mark of the Devil on Netflix? And is it something maybe I should wait to watch until i’ve seen more of the classics?
I had the good fortune to see Dawn of the Dead (Romero) theatrically last year. It’s a hell of a movie, a good balance of horror and social commentary that Romero has been struggling to replicate ever since.
That movie actually made me feel slightly uncomfortable. Has my all time fav Vincent Price but he acts so different in the film, and the overall tone is depressing. Really just a great movie all around and one of his finest performances.
I got to see Day of the Dead (My favorite) in theaters a few years back and it was wonderful. I like the character development in that one, the GREAT special effects, and even the cheese factor (Terrible actor mad scientist).
