The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

I heard they got sick of it but had to do 3 because they were contractually obligated, thus the abandoning of the ff style. Can’t find anything online to back that up, though.

Would make some sense. Just the plots go from terrifying cramped mood to full on Army of Darkness camp pretty quickly.

4 bothered me with so many cuts to different characters quickly, and the lame throwaway of the virus getting around, while the character development is all over the place. Both of those films are simply shoddy when held up to the first two.

This is a good excuse to find the first two on BD at least, love them.

Caught Sleep away Camp II and III last night, wasn’t really expecting anything mind blowing but even with low expectations they were a let down.

II had the strongest story of the bunch. Angela infiltrating as a Summer Camp counselor after being checked out of psych wards and getting a sex change. She even covered herself well with…a new last name! So smart.

Anyways she starts offing kids who do bad things like fornicating, pot, drinking, or talking back…yeah. All the while telling her superiors she has just been sending them home.

There’s a pretty bad scene where two kids attempt to scare her by dressing as Freddy and Jason, and she ends up slaying them as Leatherface so that’s something. Pacing was the biggest issue, what would be the climax of any other Horror film ends up dragging on…and on…and on. Cabin full of dead kids is neat at first but not when its all you show.

III was far less fluid and Angela barely sticks to her own rules, killing two kids off because they were boring for example. In this one she infiltrates by killing a kid and taking her place, despite being a 21 year old in a wig and not a 17 year old girl. She doesn’t even attempt to change her personality at all but since apparently all her records were destroyed that’s a good reason for them.

So she infiltrates each camp and starts offing people pretty damn quickly, the kids have even less time to develop as characters so are simply stuck as stereotypes. Detroit black man playing terrible rap, haughty racist white girl, LA Hispanic in a gang, etc.

Only scene I kind of liked was Angela remembering her time as a counselor and seeing it through her eyes as she accepts an award and the kids are clapping and standing around in a zombie like fashion.

The behind the scenes stuff with this series is pretty fascinating though. II and III were filmed at the same time but releases a year apart, and from the looks of it most of the budget went to the second film. Bot h the first and return were directed by the original guy who now owns the rights and chose to ignore the storylines in these two films.

Despite that the guy who directed II and III tried to make his own sequel for his films despite having no rights to the project. And on top of that a fourth film was planned and shot but scrapped due to budgeting issues and bankruptcy, and the thirty minutes of it has been added with scenes from the second and third as a 70 minute feature.

Horror films have such weird histories and drama.

Sleep Away Camp 1 is one of my all time favorites. I still get a kick out of watching it with someone who hasn’t seen it, especially during the ending.

Memories of the others are vague, I only remember a girl gets shoved in a toilet and is covered in leeches and shit in part 2, and part 3 had the hottest girls.

Part three Asian biker chick had amazing tits.

Toilet death was decent at least.

First one is great but loses some of its luster on repeat viewings, although the first time I saw that ending it was genuinely creepy…still is.

His series, first and return are decent but the pacing is the complete opposite of 2 and 3. As in a lot of getting to know everyone and camp hijinks with a kill from time to time.

Both timelines have some odd pacing issues for sure.

A year delay, but better late than never.

Hope it’ll be good because it reminds me a lot of Cannibal Ferox. Roth is pretty hit and miss for me.

Got around to seeing The Audition with a friend. I have to say, the last half hour of the two hour movie was well worth the wait. Sad my girlfriend happened to walk in at that last part, she was scarred for life most likely, hahaha. If you guys haven’t seen it yet, definitely check it out, but just keep in mind its lengthy.

I give it a 7/10, if only it were shorter.

Watched Part 1 of the crystal lake memories doc, was pretty good. I dislike that they keep showing the unedited cuts of kills, footage they have, and refuse to put out in a collected set.

I have the NOES collection since it only cost about $15, plan to get the Halloween one, but outright refuse to get the F13 one for lack of care involved with the whole set and the price tag it warrants.

Shame since it is my favorite of the slasher series but they think I’ll just keep buying the same crap over and over.

Green Inferno is rated R? I hope it’s not some weak ass knock off of the Italians (although there would be some irony there).

For anyone who likes the Hellraiser movies up to part 4

Surely you know that Roth is a huge horror fan boy and absolutely adores Cannibal Holocaust?

Of course, and I don’t doubt his intent. But can this movie be remotely as violent Holocaust or Ferox with an R rating?

Does it really matter anymore? The unrated version will be released at Wal Mart’s across the nation a month or two after the theatrical release. Maybe less then that considering it’s a limited release. I saw the original I Spit on Your Grave, the remake, and the sequel to the remake (which has a scene where dude’s ball sack is crushed in a vice) at a Wal Mart. I think at this point you can do whatever the fuck you want violence-wise aside from a rape scene.

And I’m sure there’s going to be a homage to the Tit Hook scene from Cannibal Ferox.

You’re probably right. I was thinking that this might be going for some kind of wider release but it’ll probably be released in like four cities, with simultaneous VOD rental. They probably aren’t that worried about content, they know who’s going to want to see this movie I’m sure.

I wonder if they’ll do anything as blatant as copying the infamous Cannibal Holocaust spike up the ass, out the mouth scene. I know Roth has said in interviews that he was always amazed by that effect.

It’s an amazingly simple effect. The woman just sat on a bike seat with a piece of Balsa wood in her mouth. To this day, some people still think that’s real.

He probably will homage that knowing him.

The main reason Cannibal Holocaust got the X rating and was banned was all the real animal cruelty in it, same for Make them Die Slowly. Personally I can do without watching animals being tortured and sliced open alive so if that’s all that is missing from Roth’s than I’m COMPLETELY fine with that.

That and the obvious snuff-allusions. And that’s understandable, it must have blown minds back in 79 and still does. Cannibal Ferox (despite advertising) wasn’t banned in over 30 countries, it was only banned in 2-3 countries because of animal violence.

Another great Italian Cannibal flick to check out is Mountain of the Cannibal God. It has quite a few unnecessary scenes of animal violence but it’s a really well put together jungle horror film. Plus it has Ursula Andress in full frontal nudity

Is that the one where they fuck the girl with a golden snake dildo?

That’s Eaten Alive (The Umberto Lenzi cannibal flick). Either that or you’re thinking of a Joe D’amato flick as it’s been a while since I’ve seen Eaten Alive.
