The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

It was recommended to me in the movie thread 2 years ago when I was asking for a good 2000’s horror pic. It makes the “who’s there” trope unnerving again, which is more than I can say for most horror films although I consider it just as much of a period drama. It’s also not too rough on the eyes and I mean more than just Kidman.

Since you like The Others check out Paperhouse and let me know what you think.

The first Evil Dead is so great because it’s the most raw out of the 3.

Sleepaway Camp. The last minute of this movie will stay with me forever.

I’m not 100% sure I follow, so I googled things:

Surreal Horror - “This is where Surreal Horror comes in. It’s not just nightmare-inducing, it’s nightmarish in a literal way, by being surreal, disjointed, dreamlike, and filled with bizarre imagery, usually saying goodbye to all logic and sanity in the process. In some cases, though, it might not always work.”

So in words I understand, it’s movies with “freaky looking shit”. Some of the movies given as examples I recognized, but I’m guessing you’ve seen them anyway so I’ll just leave them for the curious:
-Eraserhead
-Suspiria & Inferno, don’t bother with Mother of Tears
-Society
-Tetsuo

I personally recommend The Beyond since there’s really enjoyable scenery in the movie. I’m also biased since the film takes place in New Orleans.

Psychological horror - is a subgenre of horror fiction that relies on characters’ fears and emotional instability to build tension. It typically plays on archetypal shadow characteristics embodied by the threat. Psychological horror aims to create discomfort by exposing common or universal psychological vulnerabilities and fears, such as the shadowy parts of the human psyche which most people repress or deny.

I get it now. The Shining is one of them, but it’s popular so you likely know about it already. Can’t really give you any more besides what I put up.

I remember that lol, but besides that, the other thing I enjoy about the movies is how people die. One of the movies has a person getting plunged to death in an outhouse, that’s gangsta.

damn you really went the extra mile lol, thanks for the suggestions I’ll check them out:tup:

Also want to see Sleepaway Camp now that I see it has a cool ending lol.

I was about to comment on a horror thread without PG, but here he is. I’m not a hard horror fan, though I’ve exposed myself to the bulk of the hard gore/horror films. Martyrs, ASF, Inside, Salo, Cannibal Holocaust. I like a bit more art to my horror, so something like Martyrs, Suspiria, and Audition tend to appeal to me more. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre may be my favorite film of all time, not just horror.

The only movie that ever made me come close to puking was the original Last house, though to be fair, it was the first movie of it’s kind I saw. It lead me down the road of fucked up horror. David Hess as Krug is still probably the scariest, creepiest fucker I’ve ever seen in a film.

RE: It - the miniseries is fucking HORRIBLE. Especially if you’ve read the book of It. The only redeeming factor was Tim Curry as Pennywise.

From beyond, one of if not the finest horror film ive seen, 1988 i think.

There’s one by the creator or whatever of alien i cant remember, i think its called dead and buried, not really a fully blown horror but its a good film.

Id like to take my hat off to the guy that said phantasm, what a series, man all 4 films are pretty good cant say that about alot of series.

id agree also the first evil dead is so much better, i found it pretty creepy, the 2nd is to light hearted

sorry mate i just remembered another one i think its called paperhouse, ive not seen it myself but ive seen alot of people reccomend it

People kept spoiling the “Twist” to me and I have yet to see it outside of some clips, knowing what will happens takes the impact away.

Most Italian Horror is pretty awesome, my favorite Foreign market to dip into.

Black Sunday, City of the Living Dead, From Beyond, Demons & Demons 2, Tenebre, Suspiria, Inferno, Zombi(e), The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Black Sabbath, and more are just fun and varied. They have a lot of shit as well (Dario Argento himself flip flops from doing great work to horrible, like a more talented Wes Craven) but I am never outright bored or angry after spending time watching them.

Criminally overlooked Horror films you guys should look into, vary in quality but entertaining: Dead & Buried (mentioned a couple of times here, fantastic film), Robert Englund’s Phantom of the Opera 1989, Phantom of the Paradise, Terrorvision, Tombs of the Blind Dead, Humongous, Chopping Mall/Killbots, Maniac!, Madman, The Burning, The Mutilator, Sweet Home (The game for this inspired Resident Evil, film is pretty weird).

Most of those fall under the Slasher category in various ways.

Sleepaway Camp is more or less “Eh” outside of the shock ending, while some kills are creative it’s more or less censored up and is mainly a story about camp life. Stay away from the sequels at all costs, somehow the films spawned two separate timelines. Kind of like what Halloween did but with less of a budget.

Anyone a fan of Clive Barkers literary work? I enjoy the Books of Blood, Hellbound Heart, and a book he wrote with help by Stephen Jones based on a BBC television series he did called “Clive Barker’s A-Z of Horror”.

Demons and Demons 2 are some baller shit.

Anyone see Mulberry Street? Was pretty decent and one of the few After Dark movies I like.

I have yet to see the first two REC movies but REC3 is playing on HDnet movies tomorrow night before it even comes out in american theaters. I’m really hoping it’s subbed and not dubbed.

Definitely agree with this–Krug is up there with great horror villains like Freddy Kruger, The Hitcher, and Jason Vorhees. I liked him as a villain, disliked him as a person since:

Some of the things Krug does, movie spoilers

Spoiler

Raped a girl
Killed her friend and made the girl watch
Forced a girl to pee on herself
Made his son feel worthless and shoot himself

(I’m sure I’m missing some but those are what I remember).

I know some movies like to give the villain some sort of redemption/explanation, like having a traumatized past, performing some sort of heroic feat, etc. Krug did none of that–he was just a fucked up individual from beginning to end. So I enjoyed watching the dad slice Krug up with a chainsaw.

Speaking of horror villains, I know Michael Clarke Duncan passed away recently, but you know what role I’d like to see him in? The Candyman. The original is a great film (and last I checked free to watch on Youtube, surprised me), I enjoyed it for its use of environment to explain what’s going on in the main character’s head.

Wow, thanks guys. Crossed has its hooks in me deep now.

Yeah I got most of the After Dark stuff on sale, Mulberry was pretty good. When I unpack my stuff I’ll name the others I liked from that and the eight films to die for or whatever collection.

How bad is the Carrie 20(whatever) version? I was rewatching the OG version recently to study it some and it dawned on me that I never saw the sequel or that.

Crap, as will the upcoming Remake most likely be.

I’d give IT a fair shake now that I am not a pre-teen scared shitless boy but damn that movie gave me a fucking fear a clowns.

i forgot about the people under the stairs, i really enjoyed that one

One i’ll will recommend as i think a bit underrated is galaxy of terror, i love this film having said that i just watched it once so opinions change the more you watch a film

Of course you got REanimator, avoid the follow ups, i suppose the 3rd aint that bad i’ve seen alot worse

Night of the creeps is enjoyable

A film with alot of strange imagery and i found a bit weird is a film called altered states, not to bad i never finished watching it though

Ones to avoid

Basket case, all of them

Hellrazer after 2, fuck id even say avoid 2 if your looking for a decent plot

evilspeak

nomads

I’ve just remembered another semi decent italian horror, phenomemon think its got the same guy who was in halloween, plesance i cant remember

Is REC 3 already out in theaters? (selected theaters in the U.S. im guessing). The first 2 were pretty cool and had a creepy vibe to it, but from screenshots ive seen, it seems like it ditched the found footage style and went to a traditional style film? And i hear its super funny and not really scary. Anyone seen it?

Not yet, I believe it’s up on most VOD services if you are interested in checking it out.

Virtua_Leon: Bride of the Reanimator and Hellraiser II are worth checking out, and a lot of the fanbase say they are better than the originals. Personally I enjoy HRII more myself as the Otherworld stuff in the Box is pretty coo.
