I played a bit of Fatal Frame 4 at a friends house before, it’s a pretty cool horror game if you have a Wii
How was the “Prequel” Thing movie?
Pretty uninspiring, and some would say downright awful. I guess it helped explain some stuff but again, I like the mystery. If you set your expectations real low a rental isn’t bad.
That’s what I thought. I’ll just tick with the superior 80’s version.
2 of the biggest problems with that movie is, the story is just borring as hell. They could have added a lot more to the story, it felt rushed and unfinished. The characters are dull and lack any depth, every time a character dies its like, who cares
Crossed and Hack/Slash are pretty sweet, I need to read more of them.
Here are some I’ll recommend, all 2000- (also check out the list after this one).
High Tension
Dawn of the Dead
Land of the Dead
Martyrs
Eden Lake
Inside
I’ll list some movies:
The Hitcher (Get the 80s version, not the one with Lil’ Busey.)
May
Last House on the Left (Get the 70s version, a key event makes this better than the remake. Plus it has David Hess as Krug and one of the worst ways to die, ever.)
Frozen
I Saw the Devil
A Lonely Place to Die (didn’t watch this yet, just found it during research and it looked cool)
The Children
Dread
Yume Nikki didn’t really scare me like say watching Aliens in the first time but sort of like, “wow this little girl is pretty messed up in the head”. So it’s more like a surreal atmosphere, not unlike seeing some messed up stuff in Silent Hill.
Dead Space, I like the games and think they are fun, but I felt like I got used to the necromorphs really fast. If there is some means to defend, then that seems to take away a lot from the horror aspect. I guess I look at the “Gamey” things of a game a lot. Like I would randomly try to clear an area using flamethrower only or try to see if I can bitchslap a necromorph mid jump and then stomp on it’s face, not to save ammo (since even on harder difficulties it’s not too hard to manage) but I think it’s actually kind of funny. Isaac Clarke = Space Charlie Murphy and Necromorphs = Rick James + Cocaine.
I love Anmesia, but I have to admit, if you ever really stare at the monster’s face a while, it actually makes it less scary. Though if you try scp containment breach (posted earlier), it sort of inverts that notion since one of the monsters you need to stare at or it will kill you and adds to the tension because you have to blink eventually.
7th Guest is creepy as hell. My dad bought that randomly one time because it was in the bargain bin at Comp Usa. I wish I could dig it up somewhere again around my house, because I was too young to actually comprehend the puzzles back then and just clicked stuff.
The 2nd Fatal Frame is my favorite one. They have great atmosphere and some of the ghosts do look disturbing up close. I do hate the slow and “girly” run those chicks have though. The trick to get through the games efficiently though, is to wait at the last moment to get the fatal shot so you can combo them to death and by then you can really see their face up close and personal. I didn’t play the 4th one, I actually have the means to play it but I didn’t try to hook up my wii mote to my pc or anything.
Spoiler
This webcomic I actually got stuck staring at the ghosts face for a while in the middle of the night. It isn’t too bad because you can get used to it but something unnerving about it with the sound effects and the head turning. There’s also more animated korean comics and they are pretty much jump scares though
REmake is plenty scary.
I wish the Silent Hill movie was better. I love the cinematography to death, as well as how the cg creatures blend into the movie without sticking out like sore thumbs. The movie is a visual treat. Sucks that the third act was so bad and the actual acting wasn’t directed well.
Well hey the new one is happening soon, maybe that’ll be better
I feel like if the DS games didn’t give you superguns and freezing enemies and The Boot From Hell (mostly the 1st one) it’d be a little scarier.
Most people enjoyed the Silent Hill film, I thought it was alright. New one should be cool to see Sean Bean die once again this year.
REmake wasn’t scary, just had nice visuals. But to each their own if it scared you.
Evil Dead is fucking AWESOME.
I REALLY need to watch the sequel.
The first Crossed comic was pretty bad, main two character were completely unlikable, at least the only two didn’t have horrible things happen to them. Family Values was pretty shit, Psycopath was alright, and I’ve heard good things about Badlands, Crossed Wish you Were Here is pretty good and it’s a free webcomic also.
Speaking of Horror Comics the current line of Jason comics are pretty good, the old Avatar ones were shit and closer to the last few movies to come out but the newer ones are closer to the first two.
I am usually in the minority that I really love the first film, think the second is alright, and don’t really enjoy the third. Most people have the polar opposite opinion. But I liked the more straight Horror, special effects, and lack of slapstick found in the first.
Evil Dead remake, no idea how that will go. I’ll see it, just I figure I’ll be disappointed as usual.
I would say Crossed vol. 1 was excellent, Family Values was decent, and Psychopath was very good.
I wasn’t aware new Jason comics were being published. I have the two wildstorm trades and they’re both pretty terrible, and apparently Avatar never released any trades of their stuff.
I liked the firs Crossed series up till about the third issue then for the most part I just stopped caring about the two protags. And I just really wasn’t feeling Family Values, the family was just to over the top fucked up for me.
My bad I mean the Avatar stuff is good and the Wildstorm stuff is shit.
yeah I just have a soft spot for incest in my horror
Check out my thread for info, DS3 co-op is optional there are 2 campaigns one with co op and one with Isaac by himself. I liked Clocktower 2 almost as much as 1 and 3 was really good too even though it had a more familiar presentation.
I’ll definitely check out The Hitcher. I’ve seen the rest and/or they don’t sound like my kind of movie I appreciate it though. To give a more clear idea of what I mean by psychological and/or surrealist horror (not the same thing as psychological thrillers) I’ll give some examples of films I love:
Session 9
Repulsion
Rosemary’s Baby
Se7en (my 2nd favorite film)
Jacob’s Ladder
The Others
The Birds
The Others is one that seemingly nobody ever talks about, but it creeped the bejesus out of me.
