Half in the Bag: Evil Dead

Just saw My Bloody Valentine (1981) for the first time… I enjoyed it. Impressive FX for the time, creative kills and a rather creepy atmosphere… good stuff.
Anyone seen the new Evil Dead? It aint gon be released here =(.
Did you catch it Uncut? So fantastic, it was a Slasher of a different step in it’s day, I really liked the film. Seeing Evil Dead in a couple of weeks.
So watched four Horror films last night, been quite a while since I have.
Total Retribution?: Watched about ten minutes before shutting it off, don’t know if the name is right, some space zombie film but not really zombies and a ton of nudity. I got the internet movie!
The Frighteners: Never gave this film a chance before, I always thought it was a Disney-ish Ghost film. I’m not that far off but it was still pretty good. Characterful film (Outside of Michael J. Fox, he seemed distracted in most of his scenes save a few). While the plot was a little off I thought the package was enjoyable.
[REC] 3: I went in with low expectations, knowing the film style changes during the actual movie. I think they should have stuck with one style all the way through as the shift is sensor-ally jarring to me (Yeah I made up a word). Otherwise I thought it was good, nice little love story with a good production cost and a nice weaving tale. The gore effects were great as was the special effects for the possessed, the Mirror scene actually gave me an “Oh shit!” moment so kudos for surprising me film. Ending pissed me off, mainly because I wanted to see something less depressing. I’m glad I enjoyed it.
Grave Encounters 2: Another one I went into with low expectations, I figured I could get it over with. I actually really took to this film, I enjoyed the spin of the first movie into a film within a film and of these people leading their lives while investigating what happened and how obsession takes over. Up until they actually enter the Asylum I was really having a good time as the uncovered more clues and did their thing. Once the Asylum stuff hit it was more of a rehash but with better visual effects (Outside of the mouth wall). Surprising gore in this one too, the budget felt better used. I can safely say I liked this more than the first film but despite a shared setting they feel pretty different.
Zombie Diaries 2: Don’t know why I opted to finish this one, it just seemed to drag on. I thought it would be more short story based but instead we just got a teaser and then a very long segment. None of the characters got developed enough that I gave a shit, the only one was a Civilian who in the span of a few days becomes an ass-kicking machine for…whatever reason, suspension of disbelief in full force.
I wouldn’t have been so bored if it didn’t rehash the same themes found in the first, this feels like an exact remake of the first film with an order shift. It’s one of the more lazy scripts I’ve seen in a while. The barn scene and the main Military dude (I don’t even remember any names and this is an hour or so off from watching, how sad) were alright but not enough to save this plodding film. Avoid at all costs.
Yep, I believe I saw the uncut version. =D.
Thinking of watching a documentary, Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown… but we’ll see…
So how’s that Evil Dead remake?
just got back. Overall, good horror movie, but lots of little issues:
The main chick does SOOOO much shit to herself during the movie to get all fucked up (slices tongue in half, burns herself with boiling water, stabbed and other shit a bunch, multiple other injuries), but by the end of the movie when she turns normal again, she’s fucking fine.
The Necronomicon had no face on the front cover which kinda sucked, and also it made mention that the book needed 5 souls to summon this super evil being. It only got 4 (main chick didn’t die) but the bad shit still happened, and yet it wasn’t really that bad. Supreme evil chick basically just claws around everywhere and looks pretty fucking normal for a demon.
Once everything bad starts happening, everybody just kinda goes into their own separate rooms and gets fucked up one by one which was WAY too predictable.
In the original, the deadites were tough to deal with until you literally chopped them into pieces. Here, it seems they randomly stay dead depending on the whim of the director.
The biggest issue I had was that in the original movie, it seemed like the woods themselves were coming to get the cast, whereas here you’re just waiting for the creepy girl you keep getting flashes of (the one who shows up at the end for the end boss battle). Every time you look in a mirror, or out a window, or whatever, it’s her face.
In the original, the cast had to figure what was going on, then figure how to deal with it. Here, bad shit just starts happening, people try to ignore it like current horror movies always do, then when shit really hits the fan, everybody is either dead or doesn’t want to come to peace with what they need to do. I mean, when people start chopping their own faces and arms off while vomiting blood and speaking in demonic voices, you really gotta drop the ‘maybe it’s a disease’ theory.
Dude with the glasses and long hair who looks so much like me gets absofuckinglutely WRECKED in this movie though. Like every time I thought he was going to die, he just ends up showing up again to save the day and get even MORE fucked up.
amazing gore though. I enjoyed the cast as well.
I’d give it an 8/10, and that’s being generous. Needed more OG cast cameo’s though. If you want a gory movie with some nice jumps, this is perfect for you. Probably haven’t seen a movie this bloody in a long time.
FYI - I probably jumped more during the trailer for The Conjuring before they movie, then during the actual movie, sadly.
Just saw The Awakening and Altered.
Awakening wasn’t that bad.
Altered was pretty lame.
Anything newish on Netflix to watch?
I recommend Devil’s Rock if you like a little Demonology and Nazis.
It’s getting favorable reviews from critics and fans, I’m seeing it in a couple of weeks. Just don’t go in expecting a remake like most people and you should be good, practical special effects instead of CG is always worth supporting.
I agree with all of this. What I really enjoyed was all the small nods to the originals and it seemingly being aware that it’s a remake.
I’m glad they made a movie that is “Based on the original motion picture “The Evil Dead” By Sam Rami” instead of just a straight up remake. I just wish it was more over the top.
I havent seen the Evil Dead in theaters yet, but just let me know. Is the tree rape scene back in this film? Or did they tone it down for this one? I swear if anyone ever saw Evil Dead with friends/ a date before that scene is so uncomfortable when watching it with someone else haha.
Tree rape scene is in it. I didn’t spoiler this because it’s been mentioned by the film makers a dozen times. It’s not as awesome, and yet still made the girls in the theatre I was at cringe. I wish Bruce Campbell would have cameo’d

And I DO MEAN SPOILER
[details=Spoiler]
It wasn’t really much of a rape scene. The thorn branches restrain her as a deadite girl appears and pukes out some black slime shit that wraps around her leg then possesses her by slithering up her leg and entering through the va-jay-jay. Still really uncomfortable though. The females that was with us gasped and squealed like crazy when the scene happened. lol
Its in? Oh boy, ok. Im probably going to see this with a lady friend who is really squeamish when it comes to horror movies so…this should be interesting. Im betting the original tree rape scene still feels more awkward though lol.
Finally caught freaking Tourist Trap, been wanting to see this movie for quite a while. Man was it worth the wait.
So background: Film is about a group of teens (How original!) who stumbled upon a deserted Tourist attraction that is run down looking for their missing friend. They run into the owner, a kindly looking Cowboy who tries to help them out. During all this a Mannequin masked killer with psychic abilities is stalking the teens, taking them one by one.
It doesn’t really fall in a category, but if I had to guess Slasher would be a comfortable spot. There isn’t a lot of gore or hands on kills, but the plot follows the Slasher tropes very similarly outside of that. The killer being psychic/telekinetic means all sorts of interesting situations occur, mainly involving creepy ass Mannequins and various objects.
So watching it I had a few situations arise: One- “Damn that Cowboy sure looks like the dude from The Rifleman!” Two- “This grim and gritty look is reminiscent of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Quick internet search later shows yes! I was correct on both points. I LOVED The Rifleman and Westerns are my second favorite genre from Horror so that was pretty cool. The Special Effects guy on TCM was attached to this and he makes some genuinely creepy masks, atmosphere, and Mannequins.
My only criticisms would be the film seemed to drag on, which is odd as it barely clocks in at 90 minutes. But it had a lot of unnecessary things going on. Some plot holes pop up as well (One is particularly jarring), and the villain was a hell of a lot more interesting when he wasn’t talking all the time. It also have a very obvious story but anyone used to the Slasher genre should be used to this.
Really just a great film, I had fun watching it and how unique it felt. I’d recommend it to you guys, be wary that the only official means (To my knowledge) is an OOP VHS release.
ABC’s of Death is for sure on the plate today.
I’m waiting on torrents. But honestly I don’t know how an Evil Dead remake could top the original or even Cabin in The Woods.
The Evil Dead remake isn’t really a remake. There are numerous nods and they toy with your expectations a little bit but it’s a completely different story with a completely different group of characters. That’s probably the movie’s biggest problem. It’s totally fine on it’s own though.

Just imagine if they’d dubbed in the jolly Sunkist Fun Fruit tree laughs from the 80’s commercial as it was happening…
“Ohhhh-hohohohoho!!”
shudder

I liked original better but this one is still good. I wish they were even more graphic with it lol.
This is a movie about people in a cabin reading from the book of the dead and summoning evil. It’s great cuz you know they never really have a chance.
The change from Ash to a new character was my biggest gripe going in, and I ends up enjoying that. Definitely worth seeing.
Going in with the mindset this is a new group of kids and it happened before or after the other events seems to help. As long as the film is good on it’s own IDC.
Well done with WM, about to watch ABC’s of Death or play more Demon Souls.
