The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

It’s a ghost story.

What’s good with your roofhopping special friend?

No idea, I should have shared that story here actually lol. I forgot to scope the news, check it out later.

Just saw [Rec]3, loved it. Ive read reviews saying its good and different than the previous 2 movies, it turned out way better than I thought and the difference from the previous movies made me enjoy it more.

Spoiler

I hate shaky cam

S-VHS trailer is up. Loved part 1, can’t wait for this sequel. Looks like we get a zombie episode and some sort of giant monster episode.

I had some people tell me about how poor VHS was. I wasn’t interested, especially since it’s filled with shakey cam shit. I’ll give it a shot though. The stories in the sequel look far more interesting to me.

In other news (at 11) The Evil Dead got an NC-17 rating originally. Of course, they had to edit it to get to an R rating, but that’s a good sign. The blu-ray is probably going to be crazy.

Any good monster movies to watch?

Outside of nobody being likable (Except maybe the last act) V/H/S is pretty good, just don’t read to much into the stories and take them for what they are. Overall the Special Effects are pretty top notch as well. I’d say watch for sure and see how you feel.

NC-17 is nice, as that means the unrated copies releasing aren’t just a few seconds cut here and there.

I liked V/H/S although the Saturday the 14th segment was stupid.

Lets see…

Silent House: Fairly weak film overall. You can practically guess the plot after a certain shot, about 10 minutes into the movie. The big draw to it is the one take style of it. It looks like it was shot in just one, but a trained eye -or anyone with google- will be able to see that it wasn’t. The cinematography is kinda nice though. It’s got the usual oogie boogie jump scares, and a segment that I thought was pretty cool. I’m willing to bet that a bunch of people hated the ending when they saw it. lol. I’m definitely watching “Martha Marcy May Marlene” next, because I heard Liz Olsen’s performance in it was way better than this.

The Following: I’ve only managed to catch the second episode, but it’s nice to see Kevin Bacon doing things. I enjoyed what I watched. It has some genuinely fucked up segments in it, for certain.

Red Lights: Not sure if this counts. It was…interesting. I was expecting a hell of a lot more spooky shit, because of what I saw in the trailer. Never-the-less, the game of cat and mouse was fun. I think the plot twist could have been a lot stronger if it didn’t feel so rushed. It’s a pretty weak film as well.

V/H/S: I tried to go in with an open mind. There is so much about this movie that I want to like, but overall it was pretty fucking terrible. The main story was dumb and managed to make them seem even stupider than the average horror movie characters. They were impressively bad. I can understand them being unlikeable, but it was pretty damned apparent what their place was. The shaky cam was fucking excessive, and movies like End Of Watch and the show Southland, have made me expect more creativity when it comes to using it. The acting was shoddy and some of the writing brought down some stories that could have been great.

By the end, the glitches were getting really annoying…

thoughts on the stories

[details=Spoiler]

Main arc:… moving along

  • Amateur Night : Aside from these guys being deplorable over all and damn near willing to rape the one girl, I actually liked it -it’s second after the last story-. They were really fucking stupid, even for being drunk guys, but the vampire/whatever taking a liking to the guy with the glasses was pretty neat. Still, I felt mostly apathetic about the other two, when I should have been rooting for them to die, or escape. It’s not bad though and nowhere near as offensive as other parts of the movie.

  • Second Honeymoon: I felt nothing when everything was said and done. What ruined it for me was the need for them to make it a point to highlight that she was there to be with “a special someone” and them making the killer seem like a jealous asshole instead of anything sinister. Less is more.

  • Tuesday the 13th: One of the most creative of the bunch and it falls victim to terrible acting, a dumbass “heroine”, and a random ass ending. This disappoints the most, because it had a decent concept in play.

-The sick thing that happened to Emily… :  Had I not been watching American Horror Story, this shit would have had my wtf meter on critical when it was all said and done. Still, I’ve grown tired of asshole kids running around slamming doors n shit. Really fucked up. By this point in the movie, my ability to care for people that don’t think had dropped to below sea level. So, even though she was being taken advantage of, shit like her getting a huge fork for her arm made me roll my eyes.

  • 10/31/98: Even with it’s horrible done-to-death videocopilot tutorial special effects, it was the best one hands down. The main reason why, is because it didn’t have a bunch of idiot assholes out to cause trouble, nor did it contain a bunch of morons making ridiculously bad choices-they shouldn’t have went inside, but yea…it’s excused-, and it also didn’t just have characters whose sole existence was fodder for the killer. The story was paced very well, you actually gave a fuck about multiple people in the story, the plot twist -while not the slyest- was dope, and it ended when it should have. My only gripe is that they could have eased up on the vfx. The hands from Legend of Zelda didn’t need to come from every fucking place possible. We got the point about how bad their day was getting. This one definitely deserves praise. [/details]

Joe Dante’s - The Hole: It had some fairly interesting concepts that it explored, and I got a chuckle out of some of the more playful moments. The acting brought the film down a lot, and some of the choices made towards the end were head scratching inducing. It’s a rental at best.

Did you watch original Silent House or remake Silent House? There is a difference. In most circumstances I opt for the original.

How is dont be afraid of the dark? I remember being interested on it by the trailer along time ago and its on netflix. Is it good?

Also whats the verdict on Mama? Worth my 10$?

The original is 100x better than the remake.

Not sure about Mama, I managed to weasel out of going, but from what I heard it’s a mediocre PG-13 ghost movie.

[Rec]3 I am still om the fence about. I mean the way they did it was most definitely cool, but all of a sudden the bitch got a chainsaw and is goin HAM? I liked the first two because they gave the zombie genre some depth, but this went a whole different route and kind of gave me more of the same. I think the bootleg Sponge Bob (Sponge John) was pure gold though.

Anyone seen Killer Joe? Not sure if it can be categorized as horror but pretty fucked up nonetheless. I blind watched it and it stayed with me for two days lol

Hahaha yeah, especially when [details=Spoiler]he gave the reason why he’s still in the suit lol[=spoiler]

Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, is pretty bad. I enjoyed the concept, but the writing of one of the central characters brought the entire movie down. Still, if it’s on netflix you can easily cut it off if you find your brain deteriorating to much.

The remake. Does the original basically have the same storyline as the remake?

I wouldn’t call it horror either, but it was pretty messed up. That chicken scene was damned horrible to have to sit through.

Just finished watching The ABC’s of Death…not entirely sure what to say ATM except that the letter L was so fucked up. I would definitely recommend it for something different, and it’s fun to try and guess what each skit will be called since they don’t tell you until after each one is over.

Just saw it too… What the fuck… with such a compilation, sure there are going to be hits and misses, the first story that made me go WTF is the F (Japan), and then L (Indonesia I think), and then I could handle the rest… but then Japan done did it again with Z… Goddamn.

W is pretty wack (I thought its going to be like Q, which I dug a little because it gave a different than the rest)…

Reminded me of a Japanese movie I saw way back then, Rampo Jigoku aka Rampo Noir (anyone else seen it?)

The Insiders: Only watched this for Clive Owen. It’s pretty bad overall. The end segment was a bit wtf inducing, but it’s still a pretty bad film. Kinda creepy in spots though. It mainly falls apart halfway into the second act. meh

Locked Up Abroad: I’ve been going through this series. Who in the hell is the cinematographer for this show? A lot of the shots have been down right fucking oppressive -as they should- to see: sometimes terrifying. The show is shot incredibly well. As for the talent, it’s almost unnerving how well the actors do their jobs.

You know things are fucked up when an episode that’s lighter in tone is one with only one scary person involved, instead of terrorists and rebel death lords. The episode with Tour Guide in Africa still has me shook. :shake:

Ok. So I’m usually skeptical when it comes to horror titles these days. A lot of them are getting half assed out the doorway. But when I saw this trailer in the movies, it blew my mind. This movie looks like it’ll have a great combination of gruesomness and actual scare moments.

All I could think while watching it the first time was “Holy fuck, what movie is this??” and then BAM, EVIL DEAD.

Did not see that one coming.

watchin American Mary tonight… with slight expectation…

edited: So yeah, I think its aight/kinda liked it(?) lol cant make up my mind… Its not necessarily as I thought it’d be, more towards drama/horror, I dont feel like watching an exploitation flick or anything. I’ve only seen Ginger Snaps last year so it was kinda nice to see Katherin Isabelle again in a horror movie haha. One thing though, I kinda felt like there’s no real climax in the movie, or maybe its just not big enough that I’ve somehow missed it.

Gore wasnt excessive at all, probably less than I expected but thats not a bad thing unless you’re a hardcore gore hound expecting to see buckets of blood and chopped limbs throughout the movie… I did watch it on bluray though so the picture might be a little bit too clean for my liking… Id prefer a movie-ish feeling for my horror movies…

Thats all I can think of writing for now…
