Anyone get SOMA? It’s out now:
I was watching Soma on Twitch, pretty boring, there is really nothing scary about it.
I was watching it on Twtich too. Soma’s environment reminds me Alien isolation.
There’s nothing more subjective than horror, it’s normal for some people to find something not scary even if most others do, I’m sure there are games you find scary that others wouldn’t so horror games already have it tougher than any other genre. Plus the fact that you’re watching another player play the horror game of course you’re less likely to find it not scary due to the fact that the genre hinges on creating a sense of immersion which can’t exist if you’re not playing to begin with that’s like expecting Hitler to enjoy a Woody Allen film, you’re almost setting yourself up for failure especially considering from what little I’ve read SOMA is more of a hard science fiction game with shades of horror rather than an equal mix of the two genres.
Either way I’m super hyped to pick it up during the steam sale. Anyone have it?
SOMA doesn’t really get creepy until near the end.
I like the environment of SOMA a lot better than Amnesia.
I watched Soma for like 2 hours, and like nothing happened. Most of it is just solving puzzles, and talking. There was 1 monster that killed the guy who was playing. The monster wasnt even scary also, even when he was in the dark.
If you are going to have like nothing happen for 2 hours, and nothing but puzzles and talking at least try to make the atmosphere creepy. The atmosphere feels like any other sci-fi game.
Even in games like Silent hill and other horror games, a lot of the time nothing happened but the atmosphere and music is creepy.
I played Soma for about 4 hours, not sure how it’s horror and I wish there was actual puzzles in it or something. Maybe it would be scarier if I had a fear of nudity and disco balls…
Soma is really sounding like Amnesia to me…Shame I was planning on getting it too.
Soma looked boring from the videos I saw. The setting is great but it doesn’t look creepy. The sound design seems excellent though.
Soma is Amnesia in space. Nothing wrong with that really but youtubers hyped up Amnesia titles to the level of Five night at Freddy’s, and neither title really brings the scares to me.
I’ll pick it up when it is cheap as the story does seem handled better this time around and worth diving into.
Is Five Nights at Freddy’s actually scary and good?(puzzles to solve or anything?) Most I’ve seen is people making memes and stuff of the stuffed animal looking things…
Game wise not really. Its memorization and luck coupled with jump scares as its base gameplay. More frustrating and YouTube bait than anything.
However it does have a rich back story that is hidden in all the games. I’ve actually really enjoyed reading the lore people come to and seeing all the timelines fit together. I always said it would make a good movie and that is exactly what is happening.
The gameplay and jumpscares aren’t for me, check it out for yourself if its something you would enjoy. I think out of the four games the last two are the ones I’d have more of a fun time with actually playing.
First I played and it is very basic, and two is such a fucking mess. But the last two have better gimmicks and rules to them.
The thing that makes Five Nights at Freddy’s scary is preventing the jump scare from happening. The anxiety can build up once things get harder. There ain’t any puzzles. You have to track the movements of the animatronics using security cameras and take the necessary measures to stop them from killing you.
Ah, I think I’ll pass then.
Jump scares or “gotcha” moments as Roger Ebert referred to them as are like throws in fighting games. The threat of the throw is much scarier than the throw itself, so the more it’s used as a go to move rather than one of many tools you have the less effective it gets which is why something like Five Nights at Freddy for myself at least is something I would find scary for 5 minutes than just get acclimated and desensitized to.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent isn’t perfect, but it did definitely make me feel the creeping sense of dread a horror game ideally should it understands tension and build up better than the vast majority of horror games, and from what little I’ve seen it looks like SOMA takes it a step further and delves into the realm of psychological/existential horror which is right up my alley.
Anyone know off the top their head if there ever was a sequel to Eternal Darkness? My God, till this day that game impressed me. Complete mind fuck from beginning to end.
There was a kickstarter a while back for one but it failed. Mostly due to who was running it being a piece of shit. They planned to redo it, but I haven’t heard anything.
There were 2 kickstarters, the first one was meant to be a big game, but after that failed they reduced the budget by turning it into an episodic game, yet that failed too. I understand the hate for Dyack, but the fact is we’ll never get a true Eternal Darkness without him so gamers were “voting with their wallet” saying they’d rather have no Eternal Darkness sequel than have one with him involved which is very sad because the game looked really promising and any true fan would deal with the knowledge that he would be getting paid as long as it meant a true Eternal Darkness game was in the works.
I’ve read some interviews over the past year or so and it sounds like Precursor studios made a deal with a company who will fund the game and in return this company gets to use the IP to make other non game products with it.
Soma appeals to me because I love sci-fi horror stuff and the aesthetic is really cool. I dont like horror games where you do nothing but run and hide unfortunately. I guess this is why God invented the Let’s Play.
