The Horror games thread, SOMA is out now

I dig. Honestly P.T. feels like Kojima and Del Torro’s idea of how Silent Hill would be. Granted it is only a teaser, it was well made. who would have thought that a single hallway could be so scary… As far as SH goes, 2+3 are my favs (3’s soundtrack is on point). I played Homecoming and it was okay. it could have been better, but I understand what they were trying.

Revelations 2 finally let’s me Barry in canon, though I’m going to just get the disc version myself.

Yeah it’s way harder than just about any game I’ve played in a while including Dark Souls.

I’ve only played the 3DS demo of RE: Revelations, it felt like RE4 to me, definitely on my summer steam sales list. Interesting to see people hype for the sequel considering the negative response for RE 5 and especially 6. I’m curious though do you think it’s even possible at this point for Capcom or anyone to make a “scary” RE? The property is so well known, familiar territory, and there’s only so much you can do with zombies/BOW’s, but at the same time where there’s a will there’s a way.

RE never scared me to begin with, babby me never was bothered by it. They were just well designed games that happened to be fun in a setting I enjoy.

Revelations was a damn good game, not perfect, but much better than the super hyped RE6 that came out at the same time. It had some genuinely creepy moments that I dug, and while it is RE4 over the shoulder style the enemies are no slouches and combat can be a challenge at least on the boat.

Plus fighting hordes of hunters was fucking awesome, and the new enemies were pretty damn cool outside of a few of them.

Also BSAA Jill got dat ass.

Yeah it was a rusting dilapidated ship. Opening into an open floorplan of the grandiose gold grandfather clock and dual staircases, grand hall of the Titanic. Really brought you back to the Mansion, one locale for the entire game. Including a one off build of the main hall of the mansion from RE:1

Combat progression and bullet count of course means you aren’t scared anymore, but with the merc/raid mode of level ups and guns, Story Mode feels way underpowered if you go back to it after the first playthru.

Check it out, reviews state the same that it was new Capcom actually making something old Capcom might have back in the day and continuing that line of solid games, with less to do with RE5->6 “SUPER ACTION HERO:PEACE FORCE” to paraphrase someone else’s line on what that main line of games turned into.

I don’t know if part 2 will do much with the new-type of zombie mutants either, since its being billed as something different than these liquified goons on the ship.

What really hurt Revelations was the partner being USELESS: they couldn’t hurt the enemies at all, or score those critical shots to stun them. They might as well have not been there, unless they had a weapon that caused knockdowns. Aside from that, the game was fun. People keep saying there was no sort of agreement with Nintendo that banned Capcom from porting Rev 1 to Vita…I’m still not sure that’s true. And yeah, the baddies are just people that went nuts and mutilated/modded themselves. RE hasn’t had zombies since…I don’t know, Code Veronica? Btw, how is Operation Raccoon City? Better or worse than Outbreak?

I kinda wished that RER had local co-op but thats just me. I forgot that I owned it. I might go back to it whenever I have time.

IMO I didn’t like ORC. I played it a few times ages ago and I just wasn’t feeling it.

ORC is pretty shit but for 5/10 bucks with a friend it can be mildly entertaining for a few hours. Which is just enough time to beat the game.

REvelations partner system never bothered me much. They don’t use my ammo, they don’t get in the way, and in most cases their fire can stun or stagger enemies enough to help me out. The fact that they can’t kill is alright by me and would make a few areas a breeze if they could, and I rather like the level of challenge the game offers because of that.

Remember when I said eventually low poly games games would be made by indies instead of 8/16 bit? Well here we have one by a Japanese indie dev:

Looks interesting and we don’t hear about the Japanese indie scene much.

^ I like the unsettling atmosphere that the low graphics and grain give. It reminds one of RE1 and Silent Hill.
More games should adapt these types of style.

I would score ORC and Outbreak almost the same in terms of shittiness. ORC, the A.I. didn’t really back you up on the heals, but at least you occasionally got a free kill here and there. Outbreak, the A.I. NEVER killed anything, but healed you if you needed it. It was like some kind of fucked up checks/balances that they couldn’t get right between the two series. Both were fun in their own way, but i think i may have enjoyed Outbreak just slightly more for the classic RE survival-horror feel to it. ORC felt like an RE Destiny at some points (not that it’s bad necessarily).

Revelations was pretty damn fun, it was like my guilty pleasure, RE Dead Aim. Over the shoulder cam with the scary atmosphere/survival horror feel to it. Not to forget, the stilettos final boss, lol.

Monstrum is out, I know some SRK’ers hate the Amnesia style horror game, but this looks promising, and it has procedurally generated levels and permadeath which is almost always a benefit to the horror genre.

Rumor is Microsoft resurrecting silent hills as an xb1 exclusive with Del toro and reedus intact.

It was pretty lackluster imo

If you don’t have the sauces you are just lying man.

@Syke1 You beat it? well I’ll still probably pick it up during steam summer sale unless it’s really bad or buggy.

So Sonichuman brought my attention to new game play of SOMA the sci fi horror game from the creators of Amnesia:

LOVE the art direction it just looks really beautiful and ominious, the stealth and physics puzzle game play I can dig it, and the fact that the human brain/robot thing doesn’t recognize itself as a robot is intresting, youtube comments debate on this issue is really cool.

Yes. Played through a friend’s copy to not really feel it. Monsters are basic stalkers except for those bootleg Alien ones. Even when [details=Spoiler]trying to fuel up the helicopter didnt even work for me. Picking up items gets buggy sometimes. Once i couldnt even put diwn a cup. Turns out lifeboat is probably the easiest route [/details]
And finding the other escape routes were just so wonky. All the supplies and gathering just doesnt work with the level/enemies. But whatever. I dont even know how much it cost. But paying more than $5 for it is outrageous.

Thanks for the heads up I’ll lower my expectations when I cop it on steam sale, with the randomly generated levels and setting it looked like it could have potential to be tense, oh well I still haven’t bought The Evil Within or Alien: Isolation both of which I was super hyped for, but since they both have season passes I want to wait until their inevitable GOTY editions are on sale lol.

SOMA on the other hand looks like guaranteed hotness, there is nothing I don’t like about that demo the mood is just perfect and screams sci fi/horror with it’s moos super psyched for it. @“Dj Hyper Kid” what do you think? It looks like it adopts Amnesia’s no combat approach, but looks really different.

It looks like I would have that unsettling feeling like I am being chased by something and feeling helpless at the same time, just like in Amnesia. I like how it feels very isolated, and the demo seems pretty good. I would legit check it out.
