Is it universally understood? I’ve had to explain it to friends and acquaintances numerous times. I’ve never understood why otaku who don’t speak japanese continue to casually use stuff like seiyuu or even worse… kawaii.
The way I see it, I suppose the use of the word seiyuu for Japanese voice actors is more in line how we call Japanese comics “manga” and Japanese animation as “anime”.
Everyone knows “manga” and “anime” though. I don’t know, but it seems to be a growing trend to translate as little as possible nowadays. Even fansubs are doing it. Voice actors are voice actors, whether they are from Japan, the US, or even Germany…
true someone that knows about manga will hear about anime, and vice versa, but
someone that gets into anime is bound to run into the term seiyuu, much like a casual SF player is bound to hear link, cancel, kara, bnb. It’s a part of anime culture, if you will, that scares off the casuals or steps there game up.
seiyuu and otaku
Spoiler
I assume seiyuu only refers to the jpn VA and is more correct to say than just VA, which i assume refers to the VA outside of jpn, particularly when peeps watch subs and dubs. I’m only this familiar with the term because my sister is an anime fan who speaks/reads Japanese (but wont translate my stuff for me :bluu:) and has a social life in contrast with the term otaku. I on the other hand try not to initiate the use of new (potentially unknown) terms in a conversation but go with it so long as i’m aware of the initiators intended use of the word. imho terms should be used for the understanding of ones target audience. A seriously devoted fan’s target audience is rarely a casual or novice who doesn’t know such terms unless it’s to share knowledge of such terms.
my rant feels off topic now to me…
i’m at ch 800 and spoiler proof… :wonder: is it wrong for me to dislike Itagaki and his sister?
Nope.
Eh, he’s alright now, but me and my friend nicknamed him bitchboy in the earlier chapters lol.
Random question. Has Ippo or Miyata fought at the world level yet?
No, pay attention.
Episode 13 reminded me of why I love this series so much. Everything about the humor was spot on. Seeing those scenes animated for the first time really made me happy. ESPECIALLY the Takamura bits. The sea louse part is awesome and I can’t wait to see how that ends. (In the anime, that is. I already know how it ends.)
I’m not even close to the latest chaper so that’s why I ask.
date vs martinez, takamura vs hawk, takamura vs eagle. those were the only fights on world level.
you could consider rbj vs miyata already close at world stage. though ippo still has a long way to go considering his performance vs gedo.
Yea… I REALLY thought rbj was going to win, because that would keep Ippo from being lined up to fight Miyata… Now with Ippo the #1 seed, with a contract (or so I thought) to fight the Champion, wouldn’t this mean the next fight is Ippo vs Miyata?
I suppose the only thing that could happen is for Ippo to have a fight prior to that, and lose. That would be sad. (I don’t think Miyata vs Ippo will happen, so im sure something will come up so that they can’t fight.)
Ippo had bad luck with an opponent like gedo, if Ippo faught RBJ he would have had an easier time compared to Miyata.
i don’t think so. stylistically he would have better chances but in ippo’s case switch hitting would totally confuse him.
it’s been said somewhere in the manga that RBJ’s switch-hitting is not as effective (pretty much null) close range/mid range (aka ippo and sendo) compared to fighting an outboxer especially a counter user.
i can’t remember exactly where but it was when they were talking about how RBJ’s style is the worst case scenario when fighting against a style like miyata’s.
and besides, don’t act like ippo is a dumb caveman, gedo’s tricks were way more technical than RBJ’s switch hitting, once kamogawa and co figured out it’s concept (which surely they would have done before the fight), ippo would definitely end this in earlier rounds by forcing an in fight.
yes, that is why i said stylistically. theoratically switch hitting shouldn’t effect ippo as much as it did miyata as he is an infighter but the gedo fight showed once again ippo’s biggest weakness. his abilite to overcome unknown factors is very slow.
cynical speaking, he is indeed a boxing cavemen when it comes to adaption.
you can only imagine how much trouble he would have with someone who can continuously switch his stand and is as well-rounded as rbj.
gedo’s main trick was loosening his glove. i don’t know what is so technical about this. switch hitting on the other hand is a very unique ability that not everyone is able to use.
new ippo mugen game update =)

hes basically right, gedo didnt have anything special but just having that extra inch or two to hit ippo in the face. i think if RBJ and ippo were to fight, if ippo can keep it basically chest to chest, RBJ is fucked. the dempsey roll wouldnt be needed if ippo can land liverblows and a couple of gazelle punches. but what i wonder is who is faster overall between RBJ and ippo??
also sendo vs RBJ would be a great fight
my mistake I thought you said statistically. though the thing is, i say the gedo fight was way more technical and tactical because no one knew he did it before the fight. RBJ is a known switch hitter. if ippo fought RBJ, kamogawa would for SURE train him for it; and ippo is better than RBJ if not equal in every way statistically except for the fact that FBJ is probably a little sneakier in the ring, but who hasn’t been able to outsmart ippo in some way? lol. more strength, more stamina, about the same speed probably, etc etc.
RBJ’s strength comes from his unique switch hitting, no doubt he is a top tier boxer, but the odds are against him in every way if he were to fight ippo (or sendo).
Gedo tricked ippo because he couldn’t prepare for it, but yeah, ippo and sendo will rape RBJ in the ass in an in fight, which seemed to be RBJ’s style in the first place.
The trick was his loosened glove somehow did MASSIVE damage to Ippo. At least, it looked that way. @_@
That game looks sooooo smoooooooooth animated.
it didn’t do any PHYSICAL damage, but it’s like when somebody you really like/know/care about hits you in the face. Sure it might not hurt, but it will shock you nonetheless. Ippo thought he had the range down, but Gedo shocked him. after enough hits to the face he couldn’t see right out of his eyes, and with him being all “WHY IS HE HITTING ME FROM SO FAR AWAY” made the damage seem THAT bad.
YOU try fighting when your sense of sight and touch have been fucked with for a good 10 minutes and tell me how you do.
that said, Ippo would have some trouble with RBJ because hes ippo: He has trouble with EVERYBODY. Sendo on the other hand, would rape RBJ AND Mr Sakaguchi.
That said, the mugen game looks awesome, i’d buy that for a dollar
