The Guy Q&A Thread: Post your questions here!

I don’t think so. Guy seems like a corner kind of Guy. Bushin combo Throw puts them right in there. Bushin Flip throw tosses them there too. Hoz and EX Hoz shoulder bashes them into the corner. His entire gameplay and character design revolves around it.

You can use U2 instead of U1, and bring more game outside of the corner if you like… Seriously, there is something to be said of a ninja-type character with a grab ultra.

I don’t like U1 that much :clown:

Bushin combo FADC into ultra works if they’re 3/4ths of the way to the corner, it just doesn’t work mid-screen.

I understand that all of his moves are designed to put someone in the corner, that doesn’t mean what I said is any less true though once they are already there. He has a few good pokes and can attempt a cross up, but besides that, there’s nothing special about having someone in the corner as Guy compared to anyone else other than the fact that you need them in the corner to land many of your combos. This is of course just my limited opinion on the subject.

one thing that makes guy absolutely deadly in the corner is his ability to hitconfirm into bushin chain into ultra, tatsu, etc, using an easily linkable poke. sitting half a character distance from the opponent in the corner and poking with cr.mp, st.mp, cr. lp, st. lp, you can easily confirm if they aren’t blocking and you can follow up with bushin chain. and anti jump pokes like st. hk and st. hp prevent the opponent from getting out easily. guy’s corner pressure may not be as good as someone like deejay or bison, and his normals might not be quite as good as guile’s, but once he lands something in the corner, it’s a big deal

Am I the only one who seems to have weird problems with Guy’s qcf series? I never have problems doing qcf with any other char but with guy unless I am holding forward the whole time after inputting it I end up getting a tk air throw for some bizarre reason.

My friends complained about this too. Maybe it’s my stick lol.

^^^ Guy made me realize this little problem with me too. Just gotta grind out the motion correctly.

Now for my question, what is the difference between bushin flip elbow drop and jumping d+mp elbow drop?

The elbow out of the bushin flip doesn’t give as much frame advantage on hit, so it’s harder to combo from. j.d+MP guarantees Bushin Chain or MP-HP. MP-HP target seems to be possible from the flip elbow (which should mean jabs and Bushin are as well), but the window is veeeery tight and might even depend on how low the elbow hits - the elbow flip feels roughly like j.d+MP on counter-hit, though.

So much misinformation going on around here… Guy CAN combo after a bushin flip elbow on standing and crouching characters. The link is tight but he can combo a crouching light punch into whatever you want afterwards. Video evidence below.

I’m not saying these are easy mode but I have pulled them off in matches so they are definitely possible and we shouldn’t be saying that he can’t combo off of them without a counter hit when it can be done without one.

Thanks for the find. I can only manage to combo on standing opponents after the bunshin flip elbow when I get the hit really deep. If you get the hit to connect at directly around their head, I don’t think it’s possible to connect with a cr.lp.
So far, my successes on Cody are when the elbow contacts him near the waist area which can be followed by a combo. Any hits higher and it’ll block.

Yep, it’s possible with the right spacing but definitely not something you can rely on 100%. The set up I showed above on Ryu works on most characters with the right timing on the elbow drop and with a counter hit it’s even easier. The lower the elbow hits on their hit box the easier it is to combo.

I’ll have to try this later in actual games but I’m hoping it’ll prove to be really good in mix-ups. But now there are three options to combo from the bunshin flip elbow drop: counter-hit, crouching target and this one, so I think it’ll be pretty good in the long-run.

I have a question. Quite a simple one actually.
After a focus cripple I sometimes want to do s.hk ~ s.mp xx mk.Senpuukyaku, but for some reason the s.hk sometimes whiffs for no reason. He just kicks over their heads. Am I doing something wrong? Is my timing off? What’s happening ;( ?

close standing roundhouse after a non-level 3 focus crumple only works on some characters.

What are some good pokes, things to remember about guy? I have a hard time getting in to take advantage of a match

I fought a mirror match using Guy, and this opponent kept spamming elbow drop with a couple of mixup in the corner. with EX bar empty, I’m pretty much sealed w/o anti-airs.

Does his HP Hozanto still goes through projectiles like in alpha 3?

EDIT: ok yeah it still works.even against super and metsu haduken

In my personal opinion, I believe Guy is not as powerful in SSF4 as he was in previous titles. If possible, I would like for the Guy-mainers to post possible buffs for Guy. It may seem to early to completely say that this is true, but from what I have seen so far (from observing Diago and several other great players of the SSF4 community play Guy), the playstyle of Guy seems to be all around primarily guessing games. He has great damage dealing opportunities in the corner, but other than that, he seems to be really unsafe and a good amount of his moves are not that fast.

Rather than me just ranting and complaining about it, I’ll just post up some logical and menial improvements that I feel would tremendously boost his game, with hopes that this could catch the developers’ eyes and make some improvements on him in the future. With respect to the thread, I wanted to post this in here first and if the topic of discussion on this matter gets big enough, than I’ll make a separate thread about it.

So Here We Go:
[]1.)EX Hozanto should go under projectiles.
[
] 2.)c. MP -> LP. Hozanto is not a blockchain and pretty much any character with a “Dragon Punch” similar attack can reversal DP in between this sequence (a major headache for the players out there that come across DP spamming newbs online that would rather MASH than think).
[] 3.)c. HP should be special move cancellable
[
] 4.)Shadow Kick and Neck Flip should have super armor of EX Run, unless the super armor was broken before the attack.
[] 5.)Shadow Kick should have more active hit detection frames.
[
] 6.)*I must admit, this one may be a little over board…lol. Run should be cancellable to Bushin Flip.
I would appreciate it if you do not blast me if you do not agree with my topic. If it is true that the capcom developers pay attention to the boards, than this is nothing more than an attempt to better the character that we love to use. So please give your honest opinion about my topic and post something that you believe should be altered, changed, or whatever you want call it that would make Guy better. Hopefully my plea to better a ninja does not fall on deaf ears…lol. Post away!

While I think Guy could use some improvement in several areas (bunshin flip elbow comes to mind), I’m waiting until EVO (at the latest) to see how capable Guy really is. That being said, 1 and 3 would be nice. Forever my main now though.

Sorry dude, but this is not a question, nor an answer and you can’t just hijack a productive thread and make it about your own topic. Furthermore, it is WAY WAY too early to tell where any of the characters fall in any kind of tier list. A tournament over the past weekend in socal had ComboFiend and Combo Jack in grand finals BOTH using Guy. Not to say that he’s god tier but he can’t be that bad if players are already doing that well with him.

Just chill out, and take the character for what he is. Everyone relies on “guessing games” for offense, they’re called mix-ups. If you really want this to get responses, take it to the general discussion thread, not the question and answer thread. This isn’t the place for it.
