Online he is. Offline it’s easier to block and tech his throws. FK and airthrow beat all his stuff, however.
I disagree. I find Gouken to be around 5-5 (6-4 at worst), but I come across very few decent Goukens, so my numbers may not be accurate in your part of town. Reasons:
- No safe cross-up defence: I cross his shit up all day; the worst he can do is parry; switch to empty cross-ups for loads of throws.
- sb > fb for zoning: don’t jump and keep the sbs going at full-3/4 range; there’re limited ways for Gouken to get in on Guile, so figure them out and plan appropriately. Also, the start-up on Gouhadouken is crap.
- Air-to-air: Guile has a mild advantage here in that Gouken isn’t as good as Ryu/Ken/Akuma in the air. He does, however, have a couple of weird air moves to look out for.
- Block-string breakers: Or a lack thereof. Gouken hasn’t many options for breaking block-strings - take advantage.
ok i think i was just playing against a ridiculously good gouken player then. i wish i had added his psn. i couldn’t get near the guy.
I’ll take a look at this when I get home. If it were true, I don’t believe it’d be limited to arbitrarily selected singular moves, that seems…awkward, and far too specific of a feature to be implemented. (Ryu can occasionally make Gen’s s.mk whiff after a single mk-hands rep based on the animation that he goes into after being hit, I don’t think that’s an intentional buff to Ryu specifically against Gen)
So if it is true, then theoretically Guile would be able to super punish a variety of things given the range to do so.
In my experience jumping straight up against goukens fireballs, and mixing in the lp or ex sonic booms makes him wary about throwing them. He can’t control the speed the way other characters can so if he’s down on health you can frustrate him into trying to get to you, and i think that’s one reason why guiles zoning is better
As long as your anti-airs come through and you throw at every possible opportunity he should lose
Against gouken, if you see him ex demon flip air throw beats his options.
Guile will beat gouken up close.
f.HP b,HP, s.RH c.mk all have different timings and gouken wont be able to counter spam out of them
eventually you will drive him into the corner and since he has no real DP, you can begin your corner pressure with booms and high lows.
final video of me against JR. thats all of me on the internet and its me losing. but some good rounds until he gets me in the demon a shitload of times for the win. I fought JR since then and i didnt fall for it nearly as much the second time around. no video though

I got wrecked but you get the idea of how the match up goes
“Wrecked” is a strong word. I prefer “gayed.”
A lot of the Jap players are loving s.hp(close) and c.hp as early counters for throw attempts or for stuffing a variety of possible openers. Notice during the Abel match, Yoshio jumps in with hk, waits, then s.hp > boom; worked a treat. I’ve seen Fujisawa dashing in after c.hp (aa) and rather than throwing, he puts out an early s.hp(close) - I assume this is to counter a possible throw (or tech).
Ya, I can’t view any videos underway, but this is definately an advanced tactic. I’ve been making an effort to use it a lot more. I like to think of it as a “wanna-be ryu” setup. For advanced jap ryu’s, one of their primary ultra setups is to get close to you and force a tick throw scenario only to wait a split second then shoryu xx FADC. That is the main reason I loathe the ryu matchup… the japs do it all the time. So, it’s nice to have a meterless version of the same setup even despite the fact that it won’t lead to an ultra.
Close s.hp is nice too because it can stuff or trade with many high priority moves. If your playing against a ryu and use that c.hp AA setup you mentioned, dash forward and s.hp and he shoryus, it will at least trade unless ryu EX’s the shoryu, which is unlikely.
Unfortunately, whereas shoryu is unthrowable with a 3 frame startup, close s.hp is throwable with a 5 frame startup. So essentially, as long as your op is good at late-teching, this will almost never work. If your facing someone who you think mashes on throw though, this is a pretty golden tactic for guile. It just requires some strict timing since it can be thrown. Now, for someone who is good at late-teching, another option open to you is to back up a bit after forcing a tick throw scenario and far s.hp. I’ve used this to great effect vs. friend’s akuma.
Get him knocked down in a corner, throw an lp boom meaty over his wakeup and walk forward. As he wakes up, go to down-back for a split second in case he decides to EX shoryu through it on the first frame, then keep walking forward into throw range. During the blockstun of the boom, weave back and forth in throw range, but make sure your really close. Then, as block stun wears off, back up and s.hp. Works like a charm and is almost completly safe.
On a side note, someone should upload awesome videos to google video so I can watch them underway.
Do ya reckon Yoshio, Fujisawa, Ueda, and co. know there’s a frothing fan-club for them on this board?
@Slinkun - thanks for the info. I’ll have a fool around with it. Agree re. Ryu; it’s obvious how farcical the game balance is when you play Guile vs. Ryu. Dude has so many options. I love playing Guile, but it gets infuriating:
How do I eat Metsu Hadouken?
Let me count the ways.
solid guile Killabyte, i just glanced at the videos and you did good, very solid.
things i liked …
-
usage of AA in all matches, good solid zoning!
-
usage of cr. mp and EX flash kick in the ryu match knowing you needed an extra bit of damage to to end the match.
things i can see you improving on?
-
in the sagat match, there was a few times that he did his focus attack nearly point blank and you had a down charge… and you chose to jump away instead of flash kick.
-
spacing, in some areas you gave up too much space too quickly and got corner f**k where you could have avoided it.
-
i saw in the abel match that a few times you could have air thrown or you could have met him in the air and RH him to gain a little more space instead of cr fp and push him in the corner so you can start some corner pressure and bait those rolls. also a few times you got the knock down and avoided doing any wake up games against him and decided to try and zone him… which is good, but abel is hard to zone and he doesnt have too many wake up options, something to think about.
-also in the gouken match, when you were cornered again, there were a few times that he did a fireball when you were crouching and you didnt flash kick him. either you didnt know the spacing well enough or didnt know you could… well… you could…
and someone already mentioned flashkicking through a few block strings.
iuno if the advice helps or not, but i thought i would give it anyways.
on another related note. dont be afraid to put on some pressure after a few AA’s it leaves you decent to do a few things. after cr. fp. sometimes i like to throw an EX boom. dash in for a throw/st fp./block strings. etc…
so does a jump forward air/air attack against a few of the cast.
Not sure, maybe they do know but it may depend on whether theie english skills are any good or not. They certainly don’t appear on these forums.
What about the guy named “duke”? You know the guy who is well known for the FADC to Ultra in that match against Ryu a while ago. I have not seen many videos of him but from memory he uses zangief as well, when i looked on youtube a few months ago.
I am not sure which arcades yoshio, Fujisawa, Ueda or Matsu play at. If i get a chance to go to big box, I might possibly run into some of those guys during my holiday but the chances of that happening is pretty slim.
Yoshio has been using the s.hp as a throw counter for a while which is really effective especially because he likes to dash into throw.
I’ve never seen the c.hp as a counter to openers (see the Rufus match). Seems risky since on block you are at such negative frames but he uses it to good effect. I was waiting for Rufus to dive kick and then bait it and punish but he didn’t.

Nice, yeah this is that beastly guile I saw on the live stream the other day. I think there’s more videos of him from NSB10
I think the katakana says his name is ru-i-kun-ba-ba
Someone’s been watching my youtube video. I use the name gilleybaba
