Excellent analysis Pete. And good Guile execution (aside from the cr.hk abuse in the face of Ryu’s failure to FADC > ultra). Good spacing + consistent pressure. I just want to echo the st.hp over st.hk for hadouken punishes. Startup frames negate a lot of st.hk’s punish applications (although it’s relatively safe on block at -1).
However, I wonder if it’s part of your mind games; miss occassionally with the st.hk so the opponent feels safe enough to continue to throw fireballs from the corner and then punish at a more appropriate time… I mean, you had the momentum like the entire series.

Commentary was painful to listen to, I guess nobody expects Guile to get that so far so nobody understands his matchups. It took Joe a while to get use to the matchup, but once he did, you can really tell why there’s a long list of desired changes for Guile in the next iteration.
Heartbreak for Die though, came so close. Props to him for even getting as far as he did.
As LI Joe started pouring on the pressure, it seemed like Dieminion kept trying the same tactics and they just weren’t working anymore. Taking nothing away from Die, though; Sagat gets a three hit combo, that’s 33% life.
Dieminion = best Guile in the US? I don’t know guys, what do you think? The announcers said it, sounds pretty bold to me. There’s some guy named Dagger G that lives in Hawaii who’s kind of good…and as long as Fuson lives here, I’m not sure if Die’s even the best in the continental United States.
Best player in the US is hard to guage. As the commentators mentioned he has fantastic footsies. Excellent use of pokes. One thing that puts him above many others is that he hits every anti-air every time. This is something that makes or breaks a lot of players and something that makes him stand out a LOT.
However, he misses A LOT of damage potential in all of these rounds. When a sagat gets in close to guile, he can do one of three things…
Make space with tiger shots.
Tiger knee blockstrings.
Focus mixups.
Focus mixups on guile is NOT something you want to do as a sagat. Way too easy to flashkick on reaction. Unfortunately, dispite joe’s overuse of this, die almost always chose to jump back. Very unfortunate.
Another point is the execution of combos. This is something that takes a backseat to the aforementioned IMO, but it’s STILL a part of the big picture. Not a single j.hk > c.mp xx hk flashkick in any of those matches. He also missed opportunities with close up light attacks into s.hp. This is stuff you really do need and, in reality, isn’t very hard.
Other than that, good matches. I would say less c.hk and more focus attacks, but that’s just me.
The damage Sagat did with just two of those walking roundhouse kicks is completely ridiculous… and to know that they gave him the ability to ultra off of those is insane. The game is still fun, but I’ve noticed that personally my interest in it has been waning because of the huge lack of common sense the SF4 designers showed with things like this. Too many near invincible/dominant moves and strategies in this game.
Yeah I noticed he didn’t capitalize on a lot of jump-ins that he could have, instead of landing the c.mp xx rh.fk he would consistently go for 2 c.lp’s > s.fp, and that’s fine to an extent but he never landed the link to s.fp once.
He also ate a ton of damage he shouldn’t have and they were all tiger shots. There was no reason to take that much damage from it.
I still prefer Dagger G’s Guile although I think they only played 1 set of the Guile mirror.
Die’s Guile is more traditional and defensive. I like his utilization of s.hp, especially the backdash s.hp throw whiff punish, but he missed some good damage opportunities and against a good Sagat player, those will cost you the match. He also uses c.hk quite a bit which is too risky for my taste.
As to him landing all his anti-airs, that’s what I was most impressed with but after taking a closer look, it looks like Joe was jumping in mostly with either j.hp or j.hk which is pretty easy to c.hp. It wasn’t until later that Joe started using the jumping elbow and even when he beat Die’s c.hp clean, he didn’t use it all the time.
Hard to get on a guy when he’s fighting such an uphill battle. I still think any Sagat who loses to Guile should have to cut off a finger, but eh
they said he was the best guile!? come on now. he is good. but so many chances to cause some real damage.
i couldnt even count how many jump ins he got against Li joe just to end it with a sweep…
how many times did he miss a S. fp combo? shit. how many times did he throw out a cr. hk. he was lucky to not be punished more. also. how many times are you going to jump out of the way of a sagat fishing for focus attacks when he obviously wouldnt be able to back dash far enough to not eat a flashkick.
all in all. i enjoyed watching the match and cheers to making it to the finals!
Dieminion has a pretty good Guile. He of course doesn’t play like Dagger G or Fuson, but it doesn’t mean he’s bad. He just has a different style. He has the fundamentals down really well. Who cares if he doesn’t do one frame links? His zoning was really on point and he played really smart. Not sure if he’s the best Guile in the country, but you know how the East Coast supports it’s own people.
I watched the live stream from that tourney. Really should have gone but I am new to the arcade scene here and it is a beast of a train ride from Queens. Nice to see a Guile in contention, hard to see a Guile work so damn hard for little return.
When Dieminion was jumping back over tiger shots (to maintain charge I guess) could Sagat have dashed forward to “force” Guile to land on them? Something I was curious about when I watched it. I almost never jump back over projectiles unless I am dead corner.
Quick summary of Die: Great fundamentals and zoning, but REALLY should do more damage every chance he gets. It’s not even like the combos he should be doing are hard, he just doesn’t do them.
Also, NO disrespect to Warahk, but was Ed Ma trying in these matches or was it one of those infamous “I’m drunk, pick my character, I’ll money match anybody” Ed Ma performances?
Well a win is a win. Too bad I couldn’t see it, but I know Warhk is very familiar with Edma. Perhaps he came with a better gameplan. Warhk has a good Guile, he’s very legit. Not many people can say they put Edma in losers.
Dieminion would be incredibly good if he’d stop doing d.hk, and worked on his execution. I have the same execution problems as well. Overall he appears to have good patience and good defense. I don’t think he’s that much worse fundamentally than Fuson and Dagger G, but of course they are above him because they obviously have their execution down better. I find that ironic, because East Coast is usually known for superior execution.
Was it bad execution that was keeping Die from doing j.hk to fk? Cause Damn, I didn’t know there were people who’s execution was really that bad. His zoning must be crazy good to make up for it.
