Ed Ma used Guile at the Shadaloo lounge, he go to the semis and lost to Mike Ross’ Honda which ultimately took first. It didn’t look like he was familiar with the matchup with a lot of fk trying to counter the splash. According to Mike Ross, Ed was drunk so I don’t know if that led to all the fks, or just him using Guile in general
While I respect you’re Guile skills Slinkun, I have to disagree and say “Sometimes, you just have to do the dumb stuff.”
Gootecks, Haunts, and Oichi did a podcast recently, and Gootecks described SoCal as “dumb enough to do the dumb stuff” and NorCal as “Too smart to do the dumb stuff” but Haunts replied by saying “Yeah, and a lot of times I’d see people do really unsafe stuff that seemed so unlikely that it worked (Not verbatim but that’s generally what he said).”
Yeah, throwing FADC normals into your main game will become totally dangerous and dumb, but a random close fierce FADC into throw/block DP and punish might work if you’re opponent doesn’t expect it. I agree that it has to be the ace in you sleeve though and not something you do 24/7.
Peter, there is definately method to that madness you mention that genuinely works. For example there was a match with written commentary of (i think) ultradavid’s gief vs. ken i’s rufus. David mentioned how ken’s randomness works in his favor a lot, doing things like throwing gief on his wakeup and whatnot… to name one of many things that happened in that match. Randomness has a place in fighting games, definately.
However, I will stand by that FADCing normals is utter garbage.
Uses two bars of meter. You aren’t even using that meter for guaranteed damage.
Puts you at -5 on block as a BEST case scenario. Many people start mashing throw once they see an FADC cancel. If this happens, you will get thrown.
FADCing a normal gives a big yellow flash and makes a loud noise that says “Hey! I’m doing something stupid! Punch me in the face!” If you could be subtle about it, it would be useful. If there was no flash and no noise then I have no doubt it would be more useful, but the video and audio cues are too strong. Refer to my example above regarding david and ken. If ken said the word “throw” everytime he was going to throw gief on wakeup… you get the point.
Hell though, let’s just look at that first point though. 2 bars, no guaranteed damage. That should be enough to discourage most.
Many people saw that one match on youtube of me vs. viscant’s gief. I won due to a random flashkick FADC throw. I cringed when I did it because I knew that it was a mistake. Realistically, I should have ate an ultra. I got lucky. The moral of this story is that ya, sometimes insanely risky stuff will work, but in the end by relying on this particular tactic even rarely you are gimping yourself in the long run. When I went back to Japan after that tourney I tried that crap again and got reminded of why it’s bad.
Yoshio appears to be playing very defensively - something I’m sure most Guile players could do a little better.
When facing Dictator, Yoshio is putting s.lp to great use after pokes (b.hp and b.hk) - the number of times he stops a Scissor Kick follow-up is delightful.
Very nice baiting attempt by Dictator in the final seconds.
** I really think El Fuerte is one of Guile’s hardest matches.
*** Really nice Abel.
Is that Shiro playing Abel in the TRF vids? That Abel is beastly.
As for ELF, Yoshio really struggles against him, he’s lost to ELF the last few times he’s come across them (not sure if its the same player). I don’t think Guile can punish ELF hard enough to even up the matchup.
Apparently its Ojisan Boy
As for ELF, I too find it frustrating that he pretty much ignores SBs. I also find when I do guess right which statistically is only 1/4 times, I can’t punish with more than just a damn sweep or s.hp.
I consider Dagger G and Yoshio the best Guiles but what’s surprising is that Yoshio hasn’t even broken the 40k BP barrier yet. I thought for sure he would have more than that.
EX FK’s through fireballs is the new hotness apparently. I never saw people do that before and now I saw it in those TRF videos and in that recent huge NorCal tourney.
I said it before and I’ll say it again, Geom Guile is not good. How many cr. FP did he jump into in that match? But I guess I’m hating so I’ll stop. Good shit Flat top for exposing Geom’s Guile for what it really is. Total fluff, and totally lacking substance.
As far as the TRF vids go. Yoshio is so good. He knows his matchups so well too. I really think he played that Abel matchup really well, but I just thought that Abel was really unorthodox and definitely threw poor Yoshio off. I really hope he does well for SBO. The SRK Guile family is cheering for him, well at least I am.
