The Greatest Videogame You've Ever Played

Counter-Strike 1.x (3, 5, and 6 being the important ones)
Monster Hunter 1 and 2 on PSP
Super Meat Boy

I really like EarthBound, Gradius 3, Wind Waker/Majoras Mask and Metal Gear Solid (2/3Peacewalker are my favs)

I enjoy reading why people think certain games are the best. Like film and music, this shit is obviously overtly subjective, but at least give a reason. I don’t care if you think Athena for the NES is the best game ever, tell me why. I hate coming in to these things and reading pointless lists of people’s choices. It means literally nothing. Give me some information that may help me to understand why your gaming choices are different from mine. You know, forward a conversation instead of simply listing off games with no context.

Also, like music and movies, it’s nigh impossible to compare across genres as the reasons for playing these games varies. How can you compare something like Katamari Damacy to something like Final Fantasy 6? The reasons for playing these games and enjoying them is so completely different. The fun that comes from them and the parts of your brain they light up are different. However, saying that, I will list off a couple standout games and why I love them.

Final Fantasy 6 - Ok, so this is actually my favorite game of all time. I am older than most of you, but I didn’t actually experience this game until much later in life. In fact, the first time I actually played it from beginning to end was on the GBA. Kefka is also my favorite VG villain of all time, and in the running for my favorite character of all time. I love pixel era games (which is why you will see mostly those on my list), and to me this is the finest example of pixel era RPG. Chrono Trigger may be an overall better game due to the diversity of it’s endings, but FF6 just appeals to me more. I enjoy playing it more. It was the first game I said “I’m going to do everything, get everything and max out everything I can.” I have done this at least 3 times now, telling me I may have a problem.

Super Mario Brothers 3/World - I’m not going to pick which one of these is better. I think they both have advantages and disadvantages to each other. Anyone who tells you SMB3 is clearly the better game than SMW has nostalgia glasses on. They are practically equal and both the finest examples of platformer gaming. I’d say Megaman 2 would be a very close second to these two games. I recently went back and played through SMB3 and World to try and figure out which I liked more and decided I’m not going to separate them. They are the Godfather 1 & 2 of the platformer gaming world.

Shadowgate - Does anyone remember this game? It was just basically a series of puzzles to make it through this castle. I loved this game so much that I made my own version of it in hypercard for my high school programming class. It’s not a great game, but it may have some of the best NES era music. I think this one is pure nostalgia because I played it in the days before gfaqs or even the internet. I played it when you had to figure shit out and doing so without help was always so satisfying. I’m sure those are the reasons I still love it.

Capcom vs SNK 2 - My favorite fighter. I don’t really feel like explaining why, it’s just the one I enjoy playing the most. No deep meaning, just fun.

Final Fantasy is easily my favorite series because FF1, FF4, FF6, FF7 and FFX would all make a list of my favorite games of all time. Dragon Quest 8 is my favorite non-FF RPG. DQ8 is probably the reason I’m most depressed my PS2 quit on me.

Super Mario World.
The game is absolutely perfect.

i liked that game, but i sorta disliked that combat system. it felt complicated and weird. not easy to learn. mmm. i woulda preferred if it just copied star ocean’s real time combat. game woulda been 1000x better, imo.
coz it seemed like the developers were trying to do something that was 50% star ocean real time combat 50% turn based rpg combat. i dont think it really worked out.
but yeah, still a great rpg game. so was star ocean theot, odin sphere, tales of symphonia/abyss, rogue galaxy, and .hack g.u. series.

heroes of might and magic 2

i’ve logged so many hours into that game and have so many fond memories. every few years, i’ll go back and play the game through again, first the vanilla campaign, and then finishing off all of price of loyalty.

runner ups:
battlefield 2142
medieval total war
duke nukem 3d
heroes of might and magic 3
civilization 2

and yes these are all PC games, because fuck console, console games are a piece of inferior shit

My second favorite game of all time is Final Fantasy 6.

I have a perfect DQ8 save file, complete with all Trials beaten, a summonable Three Robot Team, and TWO Timbriel of Tension.

It was my favorite PS2 game, followed closely, like a stalker on the night of the actual kill, by Persona 4.

Sent from my thumbs, using SRK technology.

and if like the op said, if i was stuck on an island and had to take one single game to play for the rest of my life…out of the thousands of games produced in the last 30 years…it would have to be
marvel vs capcom 2
reason
reply value, most fun fighter, maybe not the best fighter, but the most fun fighter…and always something new to learn. over a 100,000 team/assist possibilities.

also, all the love DQ8 is getting is warming my heart. no homo.

I have the robot team as well as a custom team - no surprise, my teams are named Abortion Cunt Fuck and Schoolgirl Rape. I think I got 100% complete in the game as well. I can’t remember though how man ToTs I got.

WOW. I forgot Portal.

So simple in its execution, but the feeling of accomplishment after you clear a puzzle is fantastic. Part of the reason I included Braid on my earlier list. The beauty of Portal imo is it’s simplicity. One gun, Two types of “ammo,” now get out there and escape the corrupt Aperture Science Lab. Yeah, Portal is probably 3 on my list on the previous page.

Uncharted is my favorite “current” series. Naughty Dog, to me, killed it with 2/3. Mostly beacause Drake, Sully and the female companions are so likeable that the (few imo) drawbacks of the game can be looked over. The enemies go from being dumb as rocks, one gets tossed of a ledge and 10 feet away the other is just like “meh… probably some wind,” to being the most Godlike RPG users in the history of gaming, like 5 minutes later. Sure these behaviors are unrelated, and maybe the RPG guys in the castle were “better trained,” but still funny to me. UC 2/3 for best new releases.

Kefka is definitely one of the best VG villains ever

and I haven’t beaten 6, even though I have it… FUCK

The Spyro trilogy on ps1 has been my favorites for a long time.

My teams… have some disturbingly similar level names.

Mine were the Monster Cocks, and the Hot Bitch Bangers.

Final fantasy IV, chrono trigger, and seiken densetsu 3

Reasons why I say Okami

The entire game is self contained. It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger or something like that. You’re pretty much getting the game in its entirety. I felt satisfied, like a well-portioned meal.
The gameplay was fun and the brush stuff worked well. As expected from a Kamiya title.
The presentation is beautiful. From the timeless art style, to the music, to the little bleep bloops for voices and the story.
You abilities are always useful and used, not just in the dungeons you gain them in.

It’s just the total package to me. Not one area of the game felt like it suffered for another part and I mean in regards to particular areas of the game like they had to rush or gameplay suffered for story or vice versa (even though, admittedly, the game was to have full VA work but ran out of time so they went with beeps and bloops but that made the game like 1000x more charming imo).

Ultima Online

Pretty much ruined MMO’s for me. The diversity of content in that game beyond PvE and PvP is still better than anything else I’ve seen, and the skill based system allowed some creativity in making templates that you don’t have with your typical class system.

One of mine from recent memory is Metroid Prime. I think they did a great job bringing Metroid into 3D. I remember being very skeptical about it being a FPS, but then after playing, it felt like the perfect way to play as Samus behind her visor.

It Had cool boss fights. I loved the music and sound. At certain times music would fade and you were left with just the sounds of the environment and enemies. Things could go from beautiful and peaceful to creepy really quick.

I liked how there was always some sort of native life to the environment, that helped make the place feel alive and not just some linear map that you go from point A to point B.

It was a good mix of shooting and exploration.

UT2003/2004 is a close second. if we were talking best multiplayer(non-fighting) I would put UT2003-04 first. Fast, twitchy FPS. I miss it. FPS these days are so slow, like playing in molasses

The two of you are right. Just edited my list on the first page. Now I can’t be considered a lazy asshole. I kept my explanations short and sweet.
