Just to touch on a few ways it’s wildly, wildly overrated:

[]Complex materia system with the potential for interesting chains and whatnot, on top of the DEAD EASIEST game where those mechanics are barely required.
[]The very same system combines with the fact that every character’s naked commands are Attack and Item, meaning there’s no real reason to swap in/out party members. Just copy the materia setups and bam you’re on your way.
[]One way characters are unique: Limit Breaks. And here’s the difference: Cloud’s are the best for attack, everyone else’s are situational at best. Aeris can make your party invincible in, again, a dead easy game where she doesn’t even live long enough to appreciate having said Limit Break.
[]There are approximately three boss fights you actually have to think about: Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, and that crane that can grab two guys, kill the third, and net you a Game Over right there.
[]Even then, I beat Emerald Weapon before he even fired off his third action in a boring 30 minute long battle which started with Knights of the Round and proceeded to using Mime until he died. Ruby Weapon isn’t much better. The crane is, funny enough, the boss I remember most fondly.
[]Like FF6 (an infinitely superior game), the “endgame” consists of dull non-tasks until you hit the final dungeon.

Man, I never even made it half way through FFVII, I got bored with that shit. But, yo, I get bored with most games I play. I can see why it gets such great praise and I dont think its overrated. This guy up there is going on about mechanics and bullshit but Ive played dozens of games with way worse shit going on in them and they get just as much praise.

Not only limit breaks but characters have different weapons which have different effects and its not like they have the same stats. You are coming up with some dumbass reasons to say its over rated.
As far as boss fights go, i dont remember which ones I had to think about on my first play through but its the same as majority of rpgs. Either you’re strong enough or not basically. Sorry not every boss fight from a 1997 rpg has some “puzzling” action to them.

Obv FF7 was popular enough and had a good enough story to have side games. So yeah hate on the popular but it did something right.

5 & 6 yeah, eternally, but 7 has been sucked dry of all hipster juice by people for whom Pokemon was their entry ticket into J-gaming.

you can use skills, though that still doesnt matter since you have to click everything, dumb fuck. You click to move, you click pick up items, you click to attack even with skills in diablo use still have to use the mouse. Still does not change the fact that wrpgs have lame ass story lines, and lame ass characters. Most people play final fantasy series and no other rpgs, like threads of fate or jade cocoon, or hell even legend of dragoon.

materia system is pretty basic, and at the same time kind of breaks the game with quad materia. KOTR, I still hate the game
its over rated, cause the story is lame and very basic, people act like its the best thing ever. People are idiots and think sephiroth is the most bad ass thing ever. If hes soooo bad ass how come he got his body taken over from jenova? Hes fucking no longer sephiroth. Cloud is one of the lamest heroes ever, the only reason he fights is the stop sephiroth. And thats the whole story, I dont give a fuck what anyone says. Legend of dragoon, Jade cocoon, Parasite eve, and threads of fate, star ocean 2, valkyrie profile, and other great rpgs were over looked mostly due to the fact FF7, had summons, and flashy GFX. Which is the main reason why people bought ff7

Good job Captain Context, you shat all over the part where I complemented the game. The materia system allows for some really damn cool interactions, things triggering other triggers to make cool shit happen. The insult that you missed was how this cool system was pointless. Bravo.

I already addressed why Limit Breaks meant fuck all: Cloud is the TIE Defender, everyone else is a lesser TIE. The different gear and stats make too little a difference to matter. Hell Pokemon does this better. Shitty shitty Pokemon. Ponder that.

Yes you can grind to outlevel bosses. Well done Optimus Obvious; a bird goes tweet. However many RPGs are tuned to provide a challenge on someone’s first, ideally blind play through. Persona 4 does this. Phantasy Star 4 does this. FF6 partially does this but falters part way. FF7 can be rushed, underleveled, blind. I know because I did it.

you didnt rush FF7 on your first play through and get KOTR, mime,etc(underwater materia) and STILL have a 30 minute battle with Emerald Weapon seeing as you only have 20 minutes unless you did get the underwater materia. But whatever you say, keep trolling.
