Everything about the game just went in the wrong direction. I’ve never dropped a Marvel game so quickly in my life. I enjoyed it for the time that I played it, but ultimately, the roster was not to my liking at all. The stages were also so lifeless and boring…like the artstyle.
I’m still mad about that game. It’s like they intentionally went out of their way to screw that game over.
I don’t have much of a problem with the idea, even though I think it was too soon and that there were some plot points either wasted or left hanging. Mostly because of how rushed the thing was.
The real problem is how they executed that idea. Kronika jobbed on a Necalli-Tier. It’s straight up baffling how hard she jobbed.
They could easily have splitted that story between two games and not rushed everything.
Funniest part about the MvCI timeline is how ArcSys dunked on them on two fronts with DBFZ and BBTag.
It’s bad enough that Capcom flopped a Marvel game at the peak of MCU’s popularity. It’s worse when you find out they made it into a budget game when anything that had the Avengers slapped on it sold like hotcakes.
But then BBTag shows up as another budget 2v2 Tag game and does every mechanic MvCI tried to do better (Except the Infinity Eggs.) and DBFZ brings generation-defining characters in a 3v3 game when MvCI is still getting blasted because of its roster.
ArcSys just planted its foot on Capcom’s neck and didn’t move an inch.
“If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They’re just doing things,” said Peter Rosas.
“Magneto, case and point, is a favorite because he has eight-way dash and he’s really fast, right? Well guess what, Nova can do the same thing, Captain Marvel can do the same thing. Ultron can do the same thing.”
“It’s just the function that people are associating with the character, and there’s no shortage of that. We made sure that all proper playstyles can be represented with our current roster.”
The function quote is hilarious because it makes no sense on the context of the game.} he was talking about.
Why go all the way to get the licence of the Marvel chars then?
I know he couldnt go and blast Marvel/Capcom for the situation, but man, he should have thought more about what he was going to say.
The problem was Marvel would not let them use the characters but didn’t want to take the heat for it. So Combofiend got stuck trying to explain their bullshit. At least he’s gotta better job now.
I agree that they do an amazing job with lore and nods and all kinds of things, but as much as I want to love MK, I just can’t get into NRS fighting games.
Does BB Tag have similar mechanics other than being a 2v2 game?
I’m honestly curious. MVCI is hype for me to watch but I don’t find BB Tag all that interesting at all. I haven’t paid much attention to it, but I’m sure they have a few different mechanics.
Bear with me, it’s been a while since both released.
One of the defenses of MvCI fans was “MvCI didn’t ‘lose’ assists. Because of the Active Switch, everything can be an assist!” Something similar was said for DHCs.
It was immediately blown up because assists didn’t need a tag, but then BBTag showed up with both assists (3 of them too!) and the tag. And it had DHCs.
Of course, Cipher will probably know better, but I’ll always remember that particular point being brought up.
But they’re not traditional tags though, you can bring them in more instances than usual and they don’t have to come in with an attack, which isn’t always traditional either, at least IME.
I don’t know how this compares to BB Tag, but to make it seem like they just didn’t add assists is wrong. It is a different system.
Also, I kinda like that they don’t have assists as now you can focus more on picking your two favourite characters, rather than who has the best assist for your point.
The Infinity Stones take the place of assists, in a way (Reality stone more so than the others).
Okay, I see your point. I don’t really remember the lack of assists being an issue - I actually feel like I saw more praise for the active switch system. But I could be biased.
I do believe the lack of assists did upset some people - especially those that were already finding ways to laugh at the game (and don’t get me wrong, I did it at the time too… Something I’m not proud of).
