Or were they cowards for not making the games after AC1 a new franchise?
AC has had numerous reinventions but kept its most core elements.
AC1 (the shitty era)
AC2 - Revelation (the I cant believe a sequel to AC1 was actually good era)
AC3 - AC4 (the thank god for boats era)
Unity - syndicate (the we have to get our moneys worth out of this engine era)
Origin - Odyssey (the breath of the Witcher souls era)

I think that’s the issue that started after 3, since that’s when the original series director left Ubisoft. All the further titles were self-contained stories, which is fine, but then they kinda just ditched the present day element (Desmond and co.) entirely, and I’m not even sure if any entry past had still had the Assassins vs Templars plot, so nothing even connects the games outside their historical settings unlike what AC1 through 3 did - so even though you had Desmond connect to the Animus and we travelled though three different eras, all of those games were connected to each other, be it directly or indirectly.
Then Black Flag came and it’s like…oh you get to walk as some nameless Abstergo employee for 5 minutes and that’s it. Wack.
I don’t think having your protagonist being a pirate or a viking is problematic, it just shows that the brotherhood accepts members across all walks of life as long as they’re unified by their cause -i.e. preventing the Templars from taking over the world and obtaining the Piece(s) of Eden. But when their way of life takes precedence over the main point of AC games, that being assassinations and such, that’s where you know something has steered in the wrong direction
It would be too modern of a setting and if you’re out there in the battlefields going around trenches there’s no potential for the parkour whatsoever, which has been a part of AC’s identity since the first game, and at that point you’re just playing Metal Gear Solid rather than Assassin’s Creed
Look into Ghost of Tsushima coming out in July, stealth is going to be a major element of that game and the developers are recreating the era very faithfully

Don’t think too much about the animus stuff.
It’s very much a framework that is only there to hang the historical info/gameplay on.
It’s been nonsense since the second game.

I just want better combat, stealth, or better RPG elements. I don’t even care which it is just make one really good.
They’ve already proved they can create cool worlds so I’m not worried about that. But I’m not copping if combat is still roll simulator, stealth is still Skyrim 2.0, or roleplaying is just picking different answers to a question.
The problem is you can’t do all of that as well as you want.
Dark souls has better combat, but have you played the DS stealth sections? They are an abomination.
The strength of the AC games (outside of virtual tourism) has always been the breadth of options they give the player.
Can’t wait for ghost of Tsushima.

I’ll keep an eye out. So far the games that have done it are Mark of the Ninja and the one with the troll guy, Styx I think it is.
Strangely enough, I S ranked everything in the PS1 Tenchu but the Metal Gear Solid stealth didn’t feels as good to do.

Which is why I said they can just pick one. I don’t need or expect any game to be amazing in all those aspects just good in one and maybe serviceable in the rest.
Odyssey was trash in basically all those areas.
That’s not AC though. The whole point is the freedom of options.
If it’s just combat it’s dark souls
Just exploration Zelda
Just role play Witcher
Just stealth tenchu
Just boats… ac4?
I would argue odyssey was good to great in most areas. Especially for a game that has all those areas.

Vikings are boring but mainstream depictions of vikings are even worse
AC is, was, and always will be hot garbage.
Shes a very unga character that is really basic and has good support. She also has the ability to delete a characters health bar because of how her one special works with her partners

The way I see it, every video game company has these problems, but we don’t hear about them, the fact that we heard about Riot means the problem must have been enormous, but hey…
