The GGPO Discussion Thread

Every time I log on there are ~5 people in the VS lobby and they’re all afk. So that’s why I rarely play.

I want to play A2 but no one is ever on. I love ST but I’m just straight up terrible at it. I spend forever playing with Ryu then I derp around with Blanka and I do 10x better. Wtf? I don’t even play that character…yet it’s my best character.

I don’t own the arcade versions of the game, which makes it illegal for me to play.

I see what your saying and where you’re coming from, but I don’t fully agree. Capcom cares more about people buying the game, than playing it. The quality of their current titles are evidence of that. And I’m on GGPO, at least, 3 times a week for at least 2 hours each time, training. I really don’t see there being a noticeable lack of players in the VaSav room, than in any other game on GGPO. It’s not like thousands of people use GGPO and simply don’t play VaSav on there. GGPO is pretty quiet all around, which says nothing about the games on there and more about the way in which the titles are delivered. Which is no jab at GGPO, it’s just clear people would rather play console games.

And it’s like I’ve been saying since I’ve been here, Capcom dropped the ball in terms of getting Darkstalkers out there. The series really didn’t have a fair shake, like SF. Hell, Vampire didn’t even see a release on the DC, in the US. But games like Power Stone, Project Justice, Plasma Sword, MVC, and JoJo did? WTF?! I find that ridiculous. I have a feeling that SF and Marvel wouldn’t be were it is today if its last US console release was on the Saturn.

And let’s face it man, 1997-98 was a long time ago. People really don’t wanna go back and play those games when Capcom seems to be in a motion of reviving old fighting IPs. It would be like SNK reviving Samurai Shodown and AoF with their current continuation of KOF and people asking where Fatal Fury is at. Nobody plays GMoW like that anymore, but they still want a new FF. GMoW is the shit, but it’s old as hell. Time for a new installment. I still have my DC and I play all the titles I’ve mentioned from time to time, but it just doesn’t have the same kick anymore.

I’d say that it doesn’t really matter anymore considering that any method of purchasing those games will in no way give their developers the profits they deserved.

It is still illegal man. I’ve read the rules.

So is drinking booze before you’re 21, smoking pot, that bottle of soda or pack of gum you stole, and reverse engineering games either for modding or data to use while playing.

Correct, which is why I would answer the same to if there were a thread for any of those activities. I am like my buddy and old time pal, Jay “Viscant” Snyder. We are pure with each other. We don’t want to risk that by playing illegal GGPO.

a part of me hates the new revival of fighting games for the sole reason it diminished the GGPO communities for old games

i remember the ST lobby filled with players like Arturo, the Wolfe brothers, afrolegends etc.
it was really exciting spectating Alex Valle in Alpha2 or ST or watching Alioune in Alpha3 tearin’ it up, or fLoE in VS…
the international matches vs the really good Japanese players (a lot of them from the offline arcade scene) were amazing with 50-100 spectators on average… it was like stream monstering before it was cool, only you’d get the real deal match footage that you can record in replays and capture to video later and upload to youtube

ffs even Kuroda was showing up in 3rd Strike from time to time.

To be honest though, I can’t play GGPO for some reason on my PC. The build doesn’t play the emulator when I accept a challenge or vice versa. I try to play ST and get games in but god it is hard to when I have no game on my screen. I reformatted my PC today so I will try later. It’s just a pain. Now I have to find the roms somewhere.

Did you ask in chat if anyone wanted to play?

I’m on pretty much every night, where are you? This statement above I see recurring again and again. Not just by you, but a fair majority of people that talk about GGPO.

Anyway, I play on GGPO all the time in A2/Samsho2 rooms at the very least an hour, or 10 matches a day in either game. I’ve been playing the same 3-5 people in Samsho for the last 3 years or so. Also more or less then same handful of A2 players. This does not bother me at all.

GGPO over all has made me a better player. I’m exposed to different play styles, tactics, strategies, and characters that I sometimes do not find within my local community of players. As a training tool there really is nothing better then GGPO. Remember, these matches are not to be taken seriously. You are there to train, learn, and grow as a player. That is the entire point.

Another thing is this relentless regurgitating of this “well no one helps me”. You know what? No one helped me either. I took my loses, figured out why I was losing, fixed it, and came back stronger next time. No one on GGPO, SRK, Supercade, or whatever else is out there is obligated to “help” you. You can ask questions but you can’t expect someone to hold your hand the entire way. There is tons of resources out there for you to get you on your feet. You can find match videos of almost EVERY game on GGPO. Most, if not all games have a wiki or “guide” of some sort. You can also spec matches of other players in all the games.

Any computer that can run windows can run GGPO just fine as well. I downloaded the program, I downloaded the ROMS, I configed my buttons, and I was playing in less then 15 minutes. I fail to see why 80% of you have problems running this program. It boggles my mind.

booty:

First of all there are these things called ‘time zones’, its really tough for people that live far away from others (as has been mentioned above)

Second, about helping, you don’t have to help them, but its in your interest to, if you want more people to play against. If you don’t then its still the neighborly thing to do :stuck_out_tongue:

They are bullshitting clapper.

I’m not complaining but I literally didn’t see anyone from America all the times I checked. It’s cool that there’s an IRC though, I’ll join it.

I think I said this before;

how do you even know?

Shoult, I love Vsav as much as you do but I have to tilt my head on that reason to play Vsav because.

  1. The fundamentals required in VS and SF4(or any other game) are quite different. I honestly don’t see much similarities between those 2 games which leads to…
  2. Why would I play Vsav if i enjoy sf4 and want to improve in sf4 and not interested in Vsav. People play their game of choice because they enjoy playing that(those) games for whatever reason. most people play games for fun @ their own pace, playing some other title just for the sake of improving your main game sounds a bit excessive.
  3. Vsav is WAY harder and demanding than sf4 (and this is a fact). Thats why sf4 seems like ezmode breeze after experiencing some Vsav. That being said its not like all of a sudden competition in sf4 is going to be a cake walk as long as you’re fighting human opponents.

I will say this tho, ggpo has definately contributed in non-japanese players scene and level up. Hell if it wasn’t for ggpo, we probably woulnd’t even have the vsav thread here and for that I’m thankful of ggpo!

Whoa, we got ourselves a badass here.

No, but seriously, it’s hard to convince myself to pick up an old game when there’s barely any people left playing. There’s a certain point where the time you’d spend to pick up one of these games outweighs the benefit you get from playing. I’ve had fun playing ST and 3s on GGPO but it’s not really worth it to practice those games right now

ST’s a classic, everyone should play it in some form. VS and Alpha 3 have been dead for a long time, and they also happen to be really hard to execute in IMO

Even 3rd Strike is a lot easier to get into.

This thread made me get back on GGPO and play some ST.

“I don’t have time to”

Some of the same people who post on srk for 2 to 3 hours at a time.

“My computer is crap”

Its fucking vampire saviour not crysis warhead.

"Too hard to set up"
Downloading ggpo. Download the rom. Put it in the rom folder. I can understand if you have to forward ports though, which is why it might not work for some people.

"My stick doesn’t work"
I know some people really aren’t bullshitting on this one as I have the same problem, but I get mad when I hear they don’t even try.

"I suck"
Self explanatory.

People wouldn’t be getting called out if they simply say that they don’t want to play rather than making piss poor excuses while acting like fans. Killing 30 mins or an hour on ggpo isn’t hard, unless you live an extremly busy life.
