The GGPO Discussion Thread

GGPO: JacopeX

ST only for now.Want to get into the KOFUM series, Garou, etc.

What do you want to play?

Okay, so I just bought a new PC and GGPO has been one of the things I’ve been looking forward to being able to use coming from a Mac. Apparently though, there’s some bug that won’t allow people to login and judging from the length of the thread in the GGPO forum it’s been there awhile.

Anyway, what are the optimal connection benchmarks (i.e. ping, upload/download speed) for playing on GGPO?

If I could play Capcom vs SNK 2 on there I’d be set.

I wish more people would play HSF2, but other than that, I think GGPO is terrific.

Usually if you ask to play HSF2 in the ST section, some people are willing to play with you. It’s a fun game to play, but competitively is full of odd bugs, glitches, and broken old characters than ST.

Do you mean a bug for the PC version? Because I just logged in and am now spectating a match, and it took me about 7 seconds. So I doubt there’s a login problem. See also.

As for your connection, this is what I shoot for using Pingtest:

Connection speed not a big deal, in theory. But you want your ping to be low and your jitter to be very low, because the lower it is, the more stable your ping is. However, your numbers at pingtest etc will vary by how close you are to their best server, and how good that connection is.

In terms of actual match connections, anything under 100 is usually fine, but I’ve had many pretty good matches vs people at 200+, so it depends. Wired connections are better than wireless, and to avoid connection problems I usually unplug my PC from the router, and use the direct connection to the cable modem.

I been wanting to try GGPO and different mames, but am stupid when it comes to things. I don’t know how to do any if it and reading about the problems some people have, I don’t understand what they’re talking about. Which leaves me staring at the computer looking stupid

Get as far as you can, and then ask for help. You know, some of those people actually figured things out, but never got around to posting about it.

The reason I don’t use GGPO is because I too am stupid when it comes to setting things like this up. I played it at a friends house a few years ago and was amazed at how well A2/A3 played, GGPO was a lot of fun. Are the A2/A3 rooms still active? What about JoJo’s?

lol@being on an internet forum but not asking questions, GGPO’s site has a troubleshooting sub-forum for a reason people.

Sounds like you need to forward your ports, I’ve had to do that on every computer I’ve played it on to be able to log in.

I haven’t actually downloaded it yet, but I remembered people saying there were issues with it, and I went to check and see if those had been resolved before I downloaded it. Guess I’ll check it out and see if I can get it to work with my setup.

Every time I had trouble with it, it was due to ports. Some ISPs are pretty protective, and block as much shit as they can - which is absurd, BTW, since their very first reason for existing is to provide connection, in the first place. So one sometimes has to check ports and also if the ISP is not blocking them. Also, always use a wired connection. Wireless should never be used for gaming.

I downloaded it and then went to romnation and tried to get metal slug 3 to test it, but GGPO disappears after I put it in the ROMs folder. Do I actually have to buy Winrar or just use the trial version?

just get the trial version. you’ll never be required to buy it anyways.

That’s what I thought. Problem I had when was I downloaded it, it made a ROMs folder, but then I couldn’t find it again. Not at home now but I’ll mess with it again later

RAR? Just get the zip versions from planet emulation or something.
Also, 7zip is completely free and handles RAR files just fine.

Yeah, I should really just ask I guess. I’m aware of the oddities, but it’s the only way to play SF2HF on GGPO that I know of, and it’s my favourite casual fighter. NORMAL WW characters are hilarious.

Watched a youtube video and got Japanese 3S working, but I cant get any other games. How do I know which roms to download and where? I know 3S required 2.

I believe GGPO should tell you the exact name when you try? If not it should be easy enough to search the net and include “GGPO compatible” or something.

Renaming thread since we’ve veered way away from the original topic. PM with alternative useful titles if desired.
