The GGPO Discussion Thread

i really cant get the port forwarding shit to work, i am a dumbfuck

I’ve used GGPO in the past but to be honest I like to stick
to one fighting game at a time, I find it much more annoying
to divide my attention between them than I do other genres.

When I returned to SSFIV after playing MVC3 for about a month or so I felt it had
a negative impact on my skill in the former and it lasted for quite a while until I broke
some habits. In comparison, I took a half a year break from fighting games all together
until recently and I found me regaining and even surpassing my old skill level relatively quickly.

I still rarely use it but not for fighting games, the dungeons and dragons game was pretty fun.

For you guys needing help with the port forwarding let me know. I got it to work finally with a friend. It was strange as i could sometimes play other guys but not my friend in a province over. Both with 50MB connections. So we got it figured out, opened up the 2 different ranges on his router and good to go. Start with the link below.

http://portforward.com/

Choose your router, then choose the application. GGPO is in the list. We have Shaw cable routers so we were able to find both of our different type of routers from the list and find GGPO in the applications list.

Remember you need to give your computer a STATIC IP. You have to do this. By default if you are on DHCP, your IP will change and the port Forwarding will not work. Specially if you have other Wifi devices using your network. Other devices can take the IP your computer had before so hence the port forwarding will be to the wrong device.

In your network properties give your IP a static, something out of the start range of your DHCP. ie 192.168.0.100. Then just forward all your ports for GGPO to that IP.

When the website asks for your IP to help you fill in the blanks. you would just simply put in 100. (remember some routers will have ip ranges with 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.255). My router for example has an IP of 192.168.0.1. So my DHCP range is 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.255. Remember Your router needs an ip as well,

Determine your IP and your Router’s IP.

in Win 7 or Vista

hit the Windows buttons on the left. in the search type in CMD (or command) Dos window will pop up. Just type in “ipconfig /all”

scroll up and look for the connected devices, like an Intel NIC, or Broadcom etc. You will see that your IP provided will be a low number like 192.168.0.10 provided by your router. so you know that your Gateway (another name for your Router’s ip) is 192.168.0.1, Subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0 (most common). And your DNS ( will be probably supplied in the data outputted in that very same DOS window command you ran above)

Hope this helps.

No, it’s more like when 90% of the people on at any given hour of the day have extremely high pings AND they are spamming the chat repeatedly. There was also an issue where Chinese players were spreading malware on GGPO which is grounds for banning their ISPs since the ISPs outside the US couldn’t care less about it and will not play ball when someone complains about it without the courts getting involved. I also think having regional servers that you voluntarily connect to and aren’t forced to join are the solution here, not MMO-style region locking.

I don’t care what language anyone speaks on an online game and that’s the last reason to exclude myself from playing them, yet it is off putting to people who may feel differently (and a lot of people do, unfortunately). It’s the confluence of those factors NOT JUST THE LANGUAGE THEY ARE SPEAKING discourages me from playing.

high pings cause theyre um usually not from america. lol. spamming chat, who gives a fuck about chat. cmon son. stop trying to front on ggpo like its bad, when really its just lacking in a larger amount of players playing. thats why id like to see a thread more getting people on the ggpo train then this that just sparks debate and a pissing contest.

My router is SB4200 and it’s not up on that list.

I understand what you meant before and it can be what you make of it if you’re willing to tinker. For a long time Win7 had some serious micro-stutter issues with the way newer versions of DirectX handled FBA, like you said before – and now there’s only a pretty goofy work-around that isn’t confirmed to work at all. I also don’t think “config it with savvy you may or may not have and meet it half way” conducive to getting more people on there and playing regularly. You can’t sit here and challenge people to put up with a near-featureless client that can be a massive hassle for people to set up only because the netcode is exceptionally good. Goodwill dries up pretty fast when there are a few hundred other games just on the same platform that someone can go play without that nonsense.

Let me reiterate that I have no desire to sit on IRC 24/7 waiting for the few people who actually do play to show up and get games in when I can just play literally anything else on my comp anytime. Maybe the situation just esp bad with KOF but that’s all I want to play on there anyway.

yeah, those assholes picked the Karnov room for their exploit, instead of Metal Slug X, SF2 Koryu or Super Gem Fighter

hey, i here you. ggpo is just lacking in more american players for games outside of just st. it sucks. maybe i or someone should create an irc room for ggpo soon, and pop a thread for it so people can get in there and find players to play consistently or something. need more Vs games players. xvsf, mvsf, mvc1 mayne

you know if you used your brain a little, what you’re saying isn’t much of a problem honestly. All you have to do is surf the KOF forums on SRK and get someones AIM\MSN account and just throw it on there. Then whenever you’re surfing leave AIM\MSN up and if those people pop up, ask them to play. I have a little section for VS players on my AIM and if I want to play against someone when no one is on, I just hit up someone on AIM.

with such few US players playing those games, I’m sure you can get someone to play with you.

All I want out of GGPO is support for more SNK games.

I want to see the Real Bout games, especially Real Bout 2, but for now I gotta play RB2 using a savestate swap trick, and it works well, but can be a bit difficult getting to work at first. Also this trick ruined the Karnov’s Revenge room, more on that later.

Otherwise, I prefer Supercade. Supercade automatically saves your replays, which is fantastic for when I want to go back and re-watch matches or record them to upload. I wish GGPO had a feature like that, the built in replay save feature on the emulator is prone to desyncing, and it doesn’t work well.

Anyways, I am disappoint that mad 3S players took over the Karnov’s Revenge room, I can’t find any players anymore, and I used to be able to find a few great Japanese Karnov players on GGPO occasionally. 3S on GGPO is just plain bad from my experiences, those damn black bars randomly show up and I can’t see anything, I had better luck with 3S on Supercade.

Only SF games I have a good time with on GGPO are ST and A2.

P.S - Breakers Revenge is the shit.

^^^btw japan isnt really that good at karnov

paul and or jed, my ggpo has been fucking up, it runs a bit choppier than normal and i cant do in client stuff once the fb comes up like adjust sound or type in game anymore…anything i can do?

i had that choppy shit happen to me before and ironically my hard drive also died. I installed a ps2 hard drive that I only paid 15$ for and now my GGPO is pretty fucking smooth again.

I think part of that problem might be caused by a hard drive on its way to death all though I’m not entirely sure what causes that problem. Other people have also mentioned that same problem though and that was my personal fix

choosing supercade over GGPO because of replay functions is pretty stupid when its impossible to play properly on supercade because of the massive input delay it has. All you would be doing is recording videos of people struggling to play through hella amounts of input delay.

The funny part is that no top players use that crap because they don’t CARE about replays. I can’t believe people would choose replays over the net code stability. Logic train just left crazy town, next stop shoryuken.com!

I really can’t believe the insane excuses that have popped up in this thread. Its honestly baffling from any kind of rational\player perspectives.

My experience in doing this has been the opposite. Let’s leave it at that.

Did you check if you were using the experimental blitter?

VS on a good day has 10 players in the room, sometimes less than that. If a community that is barely over single digits can do it, a game as popular as KOF should also be able to do it too. You guys got to network better.

I even used to have magdrop3 players on my AIM and I would blow those guys up to play and we were only 5 deep and could STILL set shit up. Its do-able from my perspective

It’s not a matter of coordination or networking at all, unfortunately. There is an IRC channel for that ostensible purpose.

from my exp, more people use AIM than IRC.

I have more people on my AIM for vsav than there are players in the vsav IRC room waiting to play and its been this way for the last 3 years for me.

I never had any issues with input delay on Supercade, nor my friends I play with never had any problems playing with me, and they are from all over.

For certain games that aren’t on GGPO, I prefer Superarcade.

Maybe if RB2 was officially supported on GGPO and I could find people to play it with, I’d be on GGPO more. But when it comes to games like Garou:MOTW, Breakers, ST, A2, I’d prefer GGPO in that respect.

I care about replays so I can better study matches.

Also I like to capture homo-genius/queering aids moments.

I’m not saying they are the best or anything, but GGPO had quite a decent number of strong players in the Karnov room from time to time, but now the room is lost and all the players vanished.

its a coincidence more so than direct correlation…towards the end of karnov only me pignutz (409) and final showdown played somewhat on the reg. pig runs shit ass windows os that wont recognize his stick FS has a broken pad… the other people stopped playing a long time ago. the japanese that used to show up stopped a while back also aside from maybe 2-3 max once every blue moon, now that is a shame but such miniscule numbers already the game was pretty much done.

jed: i have no idea what that means, but i think it started after the last adobe update…could be unrelated tho.
paul: i hope thats not the case…
