The GGPO Discussion Thread

:frowning: I was watching old ECC videos and really wanna get into mvc1

I know one person that used to play it.

I’m still learning a lot about MvC1 myself, but I’ll be happy to play you.

I think joining GGPO, seeing all the spam in korean, portuguese, spanish and chinese, and a big list of players with 200-450 ping or more is what drives people away. Regional servers would be the next logical step, I think.

That and having to be on rickety ass EFnet at peak man-baby hours to rouse someone to play most of the time.

I mean, if GGPO would or could implement UPnP you could just direct people to [S]Megaupload(pbuh)[/S] GGPOs site to get the thing, they could install it and start dumping the roms from all those arcade boards just lying around in their house :wink2: and start playing straight away.

Also, did the FBA team fix that friggin microstutter issue in Win7? That’s what keeps me away honestly. http://neosource.1emu.net/forums/index.php?topic=1260.msg12482#msg12482 DirectX11 strikes again, I guess!

GGPO is very important because it exists to preserve the good ol’ fighty mans and liberate them from the whims of Capcom/SNK’s business ā€œplansā€.

word, i play ggpo on about a daily basis (mvc1) and there are people in there, but i usually only play my one homey because i dont wanna play random shitty laggy matches, and most of those scrubs are macro bums who think theyre legit good. id rather play a good connect with a straight up player whos good, so i got lucky. i also play ss4 and an option to play ss5 special a lot too with the same person.

but i feel shoultz, and ive said it plenty of times before, sometimes out of frustration and most times just as a general observation, and thats that niggas talk way more then they play. you would think for a community like ours, walking the walk is more then anything else, not to mention so many people claiming nostalgia constantly but arent using the greatest tool available to them for fucking free , GGPO.

i mean, even if you dont have a vast interest in being the best of said ggpo game, i feel you shoultz, it is mad interesting that so many og games are available for you to play your friends for free, on the best netcode around, and has such minimum pc requirements that a modern cell phone is probably like 5 times the pc power needed to run ggpo. lol. i have a seperate pc with windows xp on it for ggpo that i use. something that could be easily purchases for like 50 bucks these days.shits got like 512 ram, pentium 4. its a dell 4300. old shit, you dont need much.

i know some people just legit have had issues getting it to run with like vista, and especially win 7, but you can do some ten minute researching to find threads and what not to help try to alleviate those problems.

whatever, i say play what you want, but fools are missing out on dat ggpo and i was fortunate to find a couple peeps who regularly use ggpo for the games i like, so thats cool.

i think the more important question is how can we get a ggpo revival, and dare i say revival, because im not sure how much its ever really peaked in general. i think its always kind of been that known thing that still only a select few chose to use, but anyways. i mean right now st is getting shine with arts ggpo st thing hes doing, and other then that it would have to get more props on streams, and people telling people to try those old games on the best netcode around, learn the roots of the fgc a little through ggpo, and see why we like what we like, hate what we hate, and how things have shaped themselves over time.

blah, i sound like an old bitch, haha. play what you want, but fuck this thread, start a thread for a revival of ggpo players. fuck this debating why people talk the talk more then walking the walk. id definitely like to see ggpo get super popular with tons of players, and sparking more interesting conversations within the fgc about balance, tiers, history, likes and dislikes, ect… conversations for fg’s these days are generally boring. i dont know, i could get hype and ramble for hours on the progression of the vs series since cota up to umvc3, and where i think things went right, where things went horribly wrong, the wtf why’s, ect…

like, you really understand why umvc3 is a hot mess with these shitty mechanics when you play all the vs games up until now, and learn them to a decent level. you also imo will gain a new love for the oldschool 2v2 style with limited or no assist, and dare i say, how mvc2 was kind of messy as fuck and hella mashy and scrubby at first touch. mvc2 is still a fun and great game that will go down in history, but after getting back into xvsf a few years back, learning mvsf and seeing why its garbage, then playing mvc1, i was like, 3v3 style is a mess, but thats just my opinion. i think 3v3 should die with umvc3, and a game based around mvc1 style, and pace, with obvious balance adjustments and what not should be made (tvc really didnt fill that void).

i would love to talk 2v2 vs 3v3 vs games all day with anyone. im pretty good at all of them, and i just find the better of the two is the 2v2 style, especially when it comes to hopefully containing some of the inevitable brokenness of a game. well, thats kind of wrong to say, because thats still dependent on the mechanics of the game, ect…, but thats for another thread.

Only complete idiots do not play on GGPO cos of foreigners speaking a foreign language. Also, how many languages does the average Joe speak so as to tell what is spam and what is ordinary talk, or even strategy advice?

Finally, if is a total absurd to restrict players from other countries to play, specially when very good competition is available there, e.g., Mexico and Japan for USA.

I disagree, the beauty of GGPO is that you’re able to play anyone from anywhere, regardless of region-locking. The communities that exist on GGPO are already small enough, regional servers would only further segment that community and divide us. I like being able to have a choice in who I play in GGPO. The only big problem is that there aren’t enough people to play at certain times.

I just think the GGPO program in general could go through some updates. It would be nice to be able to chat between spectators, have a friends list, private messaging, etc etc. The biggest thing I’d want is the ability to play with several of your friends in a lobby, without having to constantly disconnect/reconnect. Make the online experience more streamline and integrate it with social networks.

ponder, is a family man and works. he doesnt have time to do all that shit. lol

I know he doesn’t have the time, just posting a wish list. Or hopefully maybe a pro-active computer programmer wouldn’t mind doing some work to the system, with ponder’s blessing, for the sake of the GGPO community.

I just got into GGPO. My friend and I were looking for ways to play mame games against each other. Great site and the program works pretty nicely. The best part is my Qanba Q4 RAF stick works on it like a charm. that was a great purchase when I did it.

I’ve spent about 2-3 hours trying to get it to work, I’ve opened every port I needed to multiple times, and it just isn’t happening.

Watching matches on it is pretty fun though.

We had issues at first until the ports were forwarded properly. did you 6000 to 6010 and 7000 right on both tcp/udp? Until we did that we could barely play any games but just watch mainly.

The site said to open ports 6000-6009.

I’ll try that real quick

Edit: Didn’t work

Yeah, I meant that. I understand that emulators already exist, but the online aspect of being able to play whoever, whenever is what preserves the games (they are Vs. games after all…) from of the hands of the IP holders who have yet to make a good implementation of netcode outside a few XBLA games.

I’m glad you guys are enjoying it. The Q4 works great across all platforms. It’s cheaper than that dumb eightarc, i love the start button placement, the felt bottom works wonders, it has a great weight to it that prevents it from slipping, it has quality parts, and works on xbox, ps3, and PC without a hitch. All for the cost of a standard MadCatz TE.

did you also open 7000?

I get this. I’m not sure why he would not just keep the proprietary aspects of the netcode to himself and let other devs take over fixing the rest of it, if it’s such a drain on his time. I’m sure there’s a good reason since I can’t be the only who’s asked this.

Yes

Just been really busy with school so haven’t had much time for anything, but plan to comeback at some point. Adding Weaponlord somehow would be awesome :stuck_out_tongue:

Can someone play Karnov Revenge with me on GGPO?

I can only get enough of turd strike players.
