Where is this imaginary place where people cuss at everyone, nonstop, specially at people whose nick hasn’t been seen? It certainly isn’t GGPO. As for solving the issue, the “environment” is made of people at the chat posting messages. You log in, mute everyone posting stupid stuff, and you are left with all other helpful players, who have already muted the haters months ago. And that solves the issue for you and everyone who is near your computer, checking the chat, or everyone with whom you share the GGPO account. So that does, problem solved.
It’s not much fun for me being the only noob in the Vampire Savior room vs. ppl who have been playing Vampire Savior for a much longer time, that’s why!
Honestly, why do I keep coming to play almost every night though?
If you don’t use any advantages you can to become a better player, your fighting spirit isn’t burning strong enough.
It’s not that hard to understand. Noob logs in, sees shit popping off, logs back off and goes back to playing against the CPU. It’s the same reason some people don’t play FPS on XBL.
Yeah you can mute people and ignore but no noob is going to want to do that everytime they get into a room.
Seriously, stop pretending that hostile attitudes can deter people from using sites like SRK or software like GGPO. It doesn’t matter that workarounds exist, and it doesn’t matter that not everyone is like that.
I’m not sure why people can’t recognize this as a legitimate problem for some people…
Everyone was new or a scrub at one point, the difference is that we soldiered through the rough environments and got our ass kicked over and over and got better because we wanted to.
Newer players have it so much easier now adays with combo and tutorial videos out day after day and don’t have to just grind out the time at the arcade or sessions.
We got better because of our fighting spirit, people that don’t want to put up with any hardships either don’t have the fighting spirit, or don’t have the desire to really better themselves.
The ignore feature ignores the player automatically regardless of which room you are in.
I looked at the ST room a few minutes ago and it was people talking about SOPA.
This… doesn’t matter.
We are talking about newer players here, not hardcore heads. I remember getting into fist fights at the arcade because I won/lost the end fight in a 2P game of Double fucking Dragon. Tempers flare, people get mad… that shit just comes with the territory when it comes to competitive games, especially FGs. Online FGs just take it to a whole new level of retardation because of the anonymity. It doesn’t faze me, just like it won’t faze most people on here. But it’s definitely not good for attracting new blood.
It’s only as much of a problem as someone makes it. I ahte hate hate hate hate hate HATE the ST room chat, it’s full of trolls of dicks, but that’s why i go straight into matches with people or request a match somwhere on IRC wheter it be #Capcom or #poverty. And even then while their are a ton of assholes their are just as many people there willing to help out and be respectful when people actually feel like being social and ask questions instead of just seeing RandomMcDouchebagX arguing withUnknownAsshole123 popping off and leaving.
I meant that there are in fact several assholes on GGPO, playing different games.
I can also login randomly to GGPO and find people talking about all sorts of random things. That’s not the point. Saying that some people are helpful on GGPO is as pointless as me saying that some people are just jerks. The point is that latter group can actually chase new players away. Like I said, it’s their problem if they can’t handle it, but it’s still a problem.
Honestly, if a new person gets cahsed away by some random they will probaboly never meet, they’re most likely not that serious about the games anyway. Not saying that’s bad but they were never gonna be new blood in the scene, fuck how would they handle showing up to a tournmaen tna dseeing niggas pop off?
You think all the ‘hardcore’ people in the day didn’t have to go through hardships or any animosity? You think that shit was all carebears and hugs?
New players who want to get better will get better, they will see this ‘hostile’ environment doesn’t really exist when they actually interact with it and the anonymous assholes can get ignored while they strive to get better.
As long as people make excuses for themselves as to why they don’t want to do something they will continue to prevent growth. It’s been said time and time through this thread that people are more than willing to help new players who want to learn.
The thread is talking about 95% of SRK. Some people do not have a computer. Some people do not have a stick or a pad. Some people are at Antartica, with bad pings towards most of the world. Whatever: they are not the target here. Now, at least, we have a thread at SRK telling the newbies to log in and mute the haters as soon as possible.
Off-topic: Most people don’t play FPS on XBL (or any other non-PC platform) for obvious reasons: the main one is at your hand, when you use an XBox-360.
Play just a couple.
I mean fuck, to most people who just see him on the forums Shoutz probably comes off as a bit of a jerk, but the whole ytime I’ve played in the VSAV room he’s been nothing but helpful and patient, like most other people on GGPO who ahve helped me grow as a player.
Seriously as a player I would be no where near the place I’m at as far as skill goes if I han’t utilized GGPo on top of my local scene. The very fact that people have access to this and just refuse to use it is mind boggling to me. Isn’t the reason for being on this site in the first to get better and use any resource you have?
Sure, but sometimes they’re just curious and want to see what it’s about. Maybe they won’t like it and quit, or maybe they’ll end up liking it (like many of us did) and will actually try to get better at the game. Not everyone who is new to a scene or genre is serious about it.
This is getting OT though. This thread is about people on SRK, not random noobs. I just get annoyed when people say there’s no hostility on GGPO or think that it’s not a problem. For some people it really is. I don’t know if some of you guys are just blind to this or just like to pretend it doesn’t happen.
I have to admit, it took me awhile to start actually posting here on SRK because back when I joined (it was in '08 when it was still fairly hostile, or at the tail end of said hostility) it seemed like people would use any excuse possible to jump down your throat about something. Not sure how GGPO is in comparison, but I imagine that a bunch of people playing games that no one plays would want more competition, so being a dick kind of works against you.
the people crying about hostility are still being posting on srk like xesaie\rerun aren’t being deterred from posting on SRK more. If anything the hostility has made those guys more vocal. see my point?
its so easy to remain anonymous on the net that people shouldn’t care. I’ve been on GGPO for 5 years and the hostility I’ve seen are small squabbles between players that find @ ANY tournament.
so if people are so worried about hostility towards them, they shouldn’t post on srk, enter tournaments or get on GGPO. Let alone leave your house because if you drive wrong people will shoot you the finger or cut your off. You shouldn’t go to college because there can be hostile situations there. Even shit like watching a movie in a theater and your phone goes off because you forgot to turn it off can be a hostile situation but you know what, those hostile situations don’t prevent people from doing those things now do they? People find ways around the hostility which is even EASIER to do online because of the anonymity.
The whole notion of hostility driving away players is ridiculous because we deal with it in person weekly if not daily and the people supporting that notion are equally as stupid. In fact the GGPO scene is more relaxed than any tournament I’ve been to so you should be worried about showing up to tournaments rather than playing on GGPO but we don’t tell people not to show up to tournaments because its too hostile now do we?
lol hostility being the factor driving people away. Give me a fucking break because if that was the case there sure as wouldn’t be a tournament scene because the tournament scene is beyond hostile when its crunch time
Not playing a game because someone in a chatroom said mean things to you…
lol
First of all, fuck you I will play you right the fuck now. I will lose and actually I’m not sure my connection will be stable here, but that is over the line.
Second, I was saying that people who might play on GGPO coming into this thread and seeing people just flat out being dicks about it is going to drive people away. If they actually log on it’s bro as hell but that doesn’t do you a lot of good if they never get that far.
edit: okay I guess not. I did get bodied by t0m0 for an hour though. So there’s that. And apparently my school not opening ports for shit doesn’t screw things up. Someone tell that guy from the first page.
I’m t0m0!!!
trying to teach you guys about anonymity on there. No reason to be scared when people can’t tell who you are right? scrubs can surf under any identity and practice w\o the fear of thinking people think you suck. It gets rid of that scenario entirely but its w\e, ggs though. Decent for a first timer
=p
I should have been able to figure that out.
But, that’s awesome! That game is fun and also tiring.
