Everybody has to start somewhere, the vast majority of players aren’t going to be assholes if you admit you’re learning and show you want to put in some effort. I see people say similar things about why they won’t go to tournaments all the time, they’re worried about social ramifications for not being good at an FG when that really isn’t the case lol.
Part of the problem is the way the oldschool online communities end up reading, which is 50% “that combo was .05 damage less than optimal. What a scrub!” and 50% “#&*%&$# scrubby newbs”
actually playing arenas can be better, but I just can’t blame anybody for wanting to be inconspicuous amongst a huge number of people, many of whom are about your skill, as compared to be conspicuously bad amongst a small group of people that are all friends.
(Edit: I didn’t put this in, but it really is worth noting. If people representing a community are aggressive and nasty, folks aren’t likely to believe them saying that the community is actually super friendly and helpful. Folks need to be aware of how they’re presenting)
imo, the new generation of fighting game players are so f***ing pampered with b******t “comeback mechanics” that when an older game gets mentioned, they whine that it’s archaic and “not fun” when in truth, these older games are actual foundations which the titles that they are mashing on right now are built upon. when i saw this thread that shoultz started, had an idea to get on GGPO over a week ago but i ended up and still am playing the heck out of JJBA and Red Earth on emulator that i didn’t even bother to set it up anymore. goes off to illegally download more arcade fighting game roms… or not.

That’s an issue with the internet in general, not just srk or other FG sites. I’m not going to speak for others in this thread, all I’m saying is give it a real chance. Very worst thing that could happen is you lose a lot, some random person on the internet says you suck and you maybe waste a single afternoon after deciding it isn’t for you. Best is that you find a game you love and people to chat with. Same with real life, if you don’t go anywhere then you *won’t *go anywhere.

Oh yeah, srk is actually better than most forums, although by executive decision (aka about 2009, the owners put their foot down on excessive bashing).

its only the people that don’t play on GGPO saying the GGPO are elitists when I find that to be HARDLY the case. I’ve talked to so many great players on there and none of them are stuck up and 99% of them are VERY helpful. The whole GGPO has a bed rep is only coming from scrubs who don’t actually use it because of the way people act on SRK. They’re 2 different things honestly. Is the way someone acts on srk the same as they act in real life for tournaments? that’s hardly the case. In fact, most people are pretty lax and just want to play.
can shit get real on ggpo? sure as fuck can but I think anything competitive in nature will always have those people that just squabble. If you genuinely try and show an effort, almost everyone on GGPO will help you even damdai. If you go in there and try to act like a dick\scrub towards people and you get shunned away, that’s your fault. Its basically the arcade but in a digital form so use arcade etiquette. It is a competitive atmosphere, just don’t be a dick\moron and you’ll be fine even if you’re the worst player in the world.
and whats even worse about this is that your saying people are being shunned away because most GGPO players seem like assholes. who gives a flying fuck? there is a block function where you NEVER see annoying players texts and it blocks their challenge attempts. Asshole problem solved!! its a training tool world champions use extensively. Fuck the assholes, if you want to step your game up another way, GGPO is a free way to get massive info about concepts that no one on srk talks about to great lengths
The only assholes I have every seen on ggpo are the mvc players, and even they are 10x better than srk assholes.

No, you are the problem. You don’t even play on GGPO and are not helping matters by constantly battling the players that are trying to help for real. Let people actually read their input and make up their own minds about how they see it or what the “community” is like. I doubt they give a fuck what you think since you don’t even play.
I don’t play on GGPO either, but there is no reason for me to prevent anyone else from playing it so I don’t. I can at least read what others are getting out of it and appreciate that at least some people can get some real improvement by playing on GGPO. Seems like you just want to sweep that under the rug in an effort to make yourself look relevant with nothing constructive to add. lol @ GGPO “brand”. Understanding why people don’t play isn’t only productive, its the entire point of the thread.
I think that the forum nastiness is a real issue in that. It’s just a hard issue to tackle because, well, it obviously is going to put people a little on the defensive.
It’s also an important part of the puzzle, I think, so its worth bringing up.
Now, this may come as a surprise to you, but potential GGPO users, by definition, don’t play on GGPO. They don’t know that it won’t just be MightyMar and then a billion assholes. So when half the people in this thread are openly hostile to the idea that maybe some people just aren’t that interested, it’s a pretty big fucking deal.
Here’s the thing: this thread is not about why “people” don’t play GGPO. It’s about how barely 5% of SRK, a website of supposed “fighting game enthusiasts”, apparently do not play the games they claim to like on one of two easily accessible platforms.
Like most other things you post about you extrapolated it to the broadest possible degree, talking about why “guy who played SF2 on the SNES 10+ years ago” wouldn’t want to play as opposed to what the thread is explicitly about. I don’t mean that in an offensive way either. I understand that you, as someone who has painted himself as computer illiterate would tend to care more about the “wants” of entry-level users.

I began on GGPO a bit less than a year ago, and have been helped from get stomped by CPU to mediocore levels. The people were very friendly and noted any lacking in my play.

It’s extremely easy to be hostile towards people on the internet from behind a computer screen. Let’s face it: There are some real fucking assholes online. SRK and GGPO are no exception. If people don’t want to post on here or play on GGPO because they don’t like the environment, that’s their problem, but don’t pretend the reasons don’t exist.
