The GGPO Discussion Thread

No I havent but I assumed it was the same. Anyway, yeah that’s the only real problem I had with it. Besides that, I wasnt/am not good at any older fighting games.

No. Connections will generally be of higher quality on PC, which is a confounding variable. Although either way, OE is fucked and PC GGPO is usually fine.

Gotta admit the non-trivial security risk (if still quite small) is the main thing that keeps me off of GGPO. Especially when we get to things like passing around savestates and such.

It’s like the old VD joke. “Do you trust your partner? Do you trust everyone your partner has ever been with?”

The risk of a problem is vanishingly small, but I have secrets that must be preserved!

Why do you keep coming back to this thread if you never plan on using GGPO?!?!?!?!?!? You’ve used every excuse there is thus far. Just end it. It’s like you’re trying to start a gang war on the dead horse.

Nobody uses GGPO because Supercade is more popular and better.

Still the fact that character strength perception as the game is being developed and soon after release is misleading. ST and MvC2 are examples.

As for the last part, you are free to do as you wish, and I will feel free to ignore you if you insist on such a stance. Finally, it should be clear that the abnormal hassle of tracking, reading and hearing everything Ono stated through the course of the SF4 development and release marketing could also be done by you. I will just tell you: you will waste time just so you will find out I am right. On both Ono spreading false information about the game design and Ono being a joke.

Vampire Savior is the game you will want to play because it still has a small community. The previous games are cool, but they are not being played, so they are not really an option unless you want to go through the hassle of learning a game and trying to get people to play it at the same time. Unless you have a reason to favor such Darkstakers series game over VS, it would not be recommended. This is not much different than SF2: many like CE and HF, but ST is the one still alive and sort of strong.

Well, all online games will have rollback. The only way of not getting a rollbacks would be using Kaillera and having the server in your computer: this way all the rollback will be on your opponent. GGPO actually reduces rollbacks at the expense of input delay.

I actually remove all delay (the “smoothing” parameter in GGPO) just so the timing is better when doing lots of things such as safe jumps and meaties. But it actually disables GGPO’s “magic” and turns it into an ordinary p2p online game, but at least you can do combos and block strings with the usual rhythm. Which are better than server-based online gaming such as Kaillera, where roll backs and input delay are in full force.

Supercade does have the advantage of allowing many more games. I am also able to play with ports closed, as long as P1 has his or her ports set. Finally, I can challenge people from other rooms, which often works when trying to get them to play ST. But ST is not popular at all at Supercade. For the games which are in GGPO, GGPO is more popular, unless it is a CPS-1 game.

I really like Supercade, I would often open both at the same time and play whenever I got a game going, but fact it it lacks players for the games I like, so, recently, I only use it when I can not plug the modem directly in my PC.

I wish it was more popular. The only thing missing is a friend’s list.

Are you serious? How is this logic sound? I never grew up in 60’s but I love 60’s music. People will play anything if their curiosity is strong enough especially if the gameplay is good. I challenge you to give me one modern day equivalent of VS that would persuade me to want to play it over VS. However, since your posting in this thread I’m sure you are a GGPO fan or just a troll. Either way there are many reasons why someone without a history in older games would want to play them and if you love FG’s why not? What is there to loose? Training time in MVC3 or SF4? So yeah I kinda do expect people to try out these games, especially since they are readily available for free.

Because the discussion itself is interesting. I hadn’t even mentioned my own feelings on the matter till just now, and I only did there because I remembered the old ‘everybody you have sex with’ joke.

~~

Understanding clearly the reasons why people don’t use GGPO (whatever those reasons may be) is pretty important if you want to get folks to start playing. Also, people should be able to answer the question without beiing accused of ‘trying to start something’.

Well we talked about this earlier, but there’s a >0 amount of work to get GGPO working especially when compared to ‘turn on the console and hit a disk’. If people don’t care about the games then they’re way more likely to play the games that are easier to get into… no port worries, no stick hardware compatibility, no mucking around finding ROMs. If people really care about the games that are basically stuck there they’ll get it and work and play them. If not, they’ll go maybe mess around with it a bit, but give up fairly early.

I didn’t say you had to grow up with it, i said a history. You can’t expect someone to go back and play Q3 after they’ve played BF3 or MW3, the same applies here. Majority of new players have no real reference as to what makes the older games good. If capcom decided to wait 15 yrs to release another fighting game that’s the only way i can see new players revisiting old games.

well at least more people would play them if Capcom released a DLC port of old games for consoles. That’s still my optimal scenario

It’s true that the vast majority of players don’t share a history with these games but there are a lot of people aching for a different experience. The real killer is they all expect a modern equivalent so that there will be a “scene” for it. Perhaps I may be an exception to the rule but I know a lot of players who now play older FG’s after being exposed to them no history what-so-ever. I don’t expect people to leave their comfort zones but I do expect people to give them a chance to preserve and appreciate these games. Pure neglect is a disservice to the history of FG’s and your can’t call yourself a FG fan if the only game you play is SF4 (substitute any modern equivalent). Something has got to give when it comes to the modern mentality of gamers just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s better. I say why not Q3 over MW3 they are completely different and hardly limited to the players experience. As FG players old school or new school I think it’s important that we promote old games not only for preservation but to prove that these games are just as good, if not better.

I love ST, VS, XVS, KOF98 AND JJBA. All great, fun games. But I REALLY dislike online play. Enough to where it becomes a decision to play games I hardly find worthwhile offline with the community or play games online that I really love the but the experience is not 1 = 1. I almost always choose offline with games I dislike. Truth be told, if there was an offline scene for any (or all preferably) for my aforementioned games, I would probably not touch most of the “new” games at all.

I agree with the dude who said pages back that “people just don’t want to play old games”. It isn’t their fault they came in during this era of games and trying to get people into scenes with insults and game bashing is a waste of time. Live and let live.

All that being said, I think I am gonna throw ggpo on for the weekend and play st, vs and jjba to my hearts content. lol

Yup. A game can only feel “wrong” if you have experienced in the past what “right” feels like.

and this, everybody, is why the comparisons regarding SF4 are relevant: thanks to SF4 being a successful game there is no reason for there to be changes to the gameplay of the games in that series or any other Capcom series ever again

Thanks to the responses. I’m gonna get started either now or later (because I’m tired.)

Sooooo ummmm anyone wanna play some old kof games with me, I wanna learn kof b4 i get kof 13

I honestly think you’d be worse off for doing that. Subsystems change from game to game in KOF, and the basic stuff isn’t terribly practice-based. Beating your head against people 10x better than you at '98 to learn 13 is most likely counterproductive.

true, to be honest i havent bought kof 13 and ive been holdin off on gettin it till netcode is patched, i play it in offline venues such as Next Level with other noobs and my problem lies in the basics ( movement, hoppin, basic bnbs etc.) and I that instead of playin the demo all day lolz, it’d be better if i play some of the older kof games. Also I’d like to learn ST. People say its all fundamentals. And i feel like thats where Im lackin in SF4 and I get by with easy mixups and my execution. So would St really help my sf4 game?

I think GGPO is the best we got in terms of online play and its definitely good enough for multiple world champions op players in their particular games. I’ve seen xiaohai and dakou on for kof98, nekohashi and ddsas for VS and aniken\afro legends on for ST.

if people of that level will sit there and play online and LEARN, I’m sure as fuck going to try and do the same. Especially since its free. IMO, its stupid to ignore a training tactic world champions are using especially one this accessible to everyone. and yea, not everyone is going to be super serious about training hard, I know that but this is mainly directed towards the people that do care.

I think for sf4 players in particular trying to get better, the games on GGPO can help them beef up their sf4 level. The tempo\speed of VS will beef up your reflexes. You can play ST against some god like OG’s and learn what retarded footsie skills look like. You don’t have to go back to play and love the games or even get good @ them, GGPO is this ridiculous ass training tool I don’t think many people take advantage of. I see so many posts in the newbie forums about my footsies suck ass when you can jump on GGPO and talk to someone who’s been doing footsies for 20 years and get great info.

everyone is always looking for ways to improve, GGPO can do that for a great chunk of shoryuken. certainly more than 5% IMO
