Less than 5% of SRK is good at fighting games.
Here’s a video from two days ago. Just look at those 100% combos! Man, I miss the days when people played defensively and tried to zone.

I’ve been trying to get into GGPO for Vsav, but I was having issues with FBA displaying the games after I connected to someone. Now that I solved the problem, hopefully I can pour more time into it.
I’ve heard people say this over and over, but can you provide an example of this? I’m not saying I don’t believe you. It’s an honest question.
I know that after the game was released, Ono told Gamasutra that the closest comparison to an SFII game would be ST, which was obvious because of the super combos.
Here’s one interview where Ono apparently mentions ST. Watch at 1m23s.

However, the game in the background is SF2T (Hyper Fighting), and you can actually hear Ono say “Hyper Fighting”. But the subtitles say:
But if you look really deeply, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, that’s the game. That’s the game that everyone agrees is the king of Street Fighter. We really want to preserve the feel of that game
So either the translation is wrong, or the video is wrong, or Ono didn’t mean to say Hyper Fighting. Ono actually told Famitsu he really wanted to base the game on CE, but people didn’t like the balance.
That makes so much god damn sense it’s not even funny. I remember Azrael mentioning that Loke Test Bison was rediculous. Everything he did was safe. Literally every single thing he did was safe, he could just scissor kick all day and you couldn’t do shit about it.
Ono alone gave many interviews throughout the course of the SF4 being announced up until it was finally released. I do not even know where the interviews are stored. Since SF4 was released, I stopped lurking its section here, first due to playing, and then due to quitting. It would be some hassle that I heard that whole Devastation streaming just so I could point when Valle states that combos are prevalent over the basics in new games - he means SF4 - now imagine having to check hundreds of interviews that idiot gave around the world. Sorry, man.
Ono has said so much wacky shit there’s just no end to it. I do not want to check content from someone who stated “odd-numbered SF’s were technical, even-numbered ones are fun.” Every time Ono speaks, I think of this:

Most his specials are safe, his super is also safe in ST/HDR, but he lacks in other areas. I would not trust the judgment from people playing the game for like the first time against scrubs at a loke test. They were more about marketing than anything else, really. The perceived strength of the characters when you first start playing a fighting game is misleading.
There were more than scrubs playing at the loke test. It is well-known that Dictator was really strong during the first versions. Umezono (definitely no scrub) discovered some dumb shit that basically locked the opponent down using psycho crusher or something. Many characters were very different back then. Blanka even had his HF v.ball (it hit as it came down) in one of the early builds.
In any case, unless you can show pre-release interviews where Ono said the game was modelled on ST, I’m just gonna have to dismiss that as mistranslation at best, or an urban legend at worst. I know in one Famitsu article they asked him if character strength was modelled on ST and he said they tried to reach the same sort of balance. I don’t know what the original japanese said though so I’m just going of the translation.
I feel bad about the derail seriously, but oldschool_br…
The point isn’t whether you’re right or not, the point is every. single. thread.
We’ve heard the complaints about SF4 before… and this thread is (nominally) about why people won’t use GGPO, not about ‘Thread 13842745 on why SF4 is an insult to the concept of fighting games.’
Please do not talk about the thing that a bunch of people want to talk about. My senses are easily offended and if the title does not match the discussion verbatim then I throw a tantrum.
This and other threads are definitively not “I love or hate SF4” discussion threads. Further discussion upon the merits of SF4 or lackthereof within this thread will result in pretty obvious infractions.
If you would like to talk about SF4, please enjoy our excellent SF4 forum.
Can I report this for trolling?
A big reason why such a small group of people use GGPO is because they can’t exactly advertise it on the front page of SRK. Technically discussion on to acquire said ROMs to play the games online would lead to bannings on the forums. So…take that for what you will.
Off-topic a little bit.
So I want to get into Vampire Savior, but I don’t know where to start. So I keep hearing that Vsav 3 is the best. Is that correct? And where do I download GGPO, and what chat is Vsav?
If anyone can answer these questions, thanks.
3 is the only ‘savior’ game, and the one everybody means when they talk about DS. The other 2 are Darkstalkers and Nightwarriors respectively (US names)
ggpo.net is the place to download GGPO. Every game in GGPO has it’s own chat lobby as well as one general lobby for everyone. After you get Vampire Savior going, http://wiki.mizuumi.net/w/Vampire_Savior/Tutorial#Introduction is a great read to get started.
Yes: this is a known grey area. Sorry: it’s definitely a problem. The MvC2 Dreamcast ROM, for example, is a faaaaaaaantastic example of this problem. Years 2004 onwards were pretty much guaranteed to be running on oddly acquired or produced copies of MvC2, in large part because it was utterly unavailable. That still doesn’t legitimize discussions of acquisition on this forum, sadly. You have to learn to talk around the issue and hope that people aren’t stepid.
you can’t expect people who don’t have a history with the older games to want to play them.
I do, although, fully expect people who do not have a history of competition with older games to not try and compare the new game they just started playing now to the older games they know nothing about.
Unfortunately mine won’t happen either.
I know I’ll probably get flamed for this and called a noob etc, but what I hate about GGPO is the rollback. I played so many matches in 3SOE where my opponent would be right next to me and roll back happens and the player is jumping at me or isnt even close to me at all. I hate the fact that it basically cancels what you thought was happening and put you into a new situation where you have a split second to think and react.
Have you played PC GGPO?
Rollbacks are a lot less noticable, even for the poorly emulated 3s using FBA .
3sOE somehow managed to make it worse than PC ggpo: rollback galore, and even the sound rolls back which never happened in PC.
Its a poor example of ggpo implementation.
It’s gonna be worse on consoles than on PC, as I understand it PC ggpo is essentially an unencrypted P2P connection. In comparison, consoles are either Heavily encrypted, server based, or both. (and either will have higher lag)
