The GGPO Discussion Thread

I think youre forgetting that the active dudes on GGPO VS have been playing for years and it’s their main game. It’s this weird attitude from newcomers that are making the big two get hated on way more than they should. I guarantee if you played the game half as much as they did you would be a good VS player, dead game is dead though.

Because I’m pretty much done playing all of those games, and it wouldn’t make sense to learn a dead game so i could play the 15-20 active competent players on GGPO. I would rather focus on SF4 KoFXIII and to a lesser extent UMvC3.

I mean if you guys don’t have any problems playing dead games with low active population more power to you, but I’d rather play the games of now and leave my Alpha 2 and CvS2 game in the graveyard. (fuck third strike) collective gasp from the sf4 crowd

It seems like a good portion of SRK doesn’t even play FGs in general. They stay in the GD section.

I think the value in older games lies in the fact that they are hard, and maybe not necessarily the scene or lack thereof for them. If I’m having trouble with spacing, reactions etc I play some ST and I always come out just a little bit better. I don’t think I want to learn the game enough to compete with the US elite, but I still enjoy playing it and the demanding nature makes everything else seem so much easier afterward.

I use to play ST and Alpha 2 on GGPO. I stopped playing because my computer at the time stopped working. That’s no excuse as I’ve purchased two since then. However one big issue I had was when I would play against people, and they would abuse a bunch of online only lag tactics. On such lag tatic was roll mixups in Alpha 2, which aren’t that effective offline. Another thing is that everyone on GGPO has really crisp execution, never dropping anything. You have people nailing one frame reversals pretty much 100% of the time. That’s something I can’t imagine when good players OFFLINE can’t even do it. Yeah I understand you can piano, but still I shouldn’t have someone pretty much nailing hard reversals like they’re nothing.

I occurred to me that a lot of people online use macros when playing. This was evidenced when a Chun-Li player actually did a full combo on me blocking, ended it with the super, and did the up kicks followup. Either he had the worst hit comfirm in the world (not confirming a blocked super) or it was a macroed combo he pulled off. I’m giving the guy credit and going towards that latter.

I honestly supported GGPO pretty big in the beginning. But online tactics, and macro gameplay is a big turnoff. This is very much doable on the PC much more than it is on the console. In either case, I’m not a big fan of console online play either for many of the same reasons as I’m not a big PC online advocate.

I don’t like the weird speed of playing on an emulator. Also, I can’t connect to GGPO anymore for some reason. Luckily I recently moved to a place with an ST scene near by.

It probably has to do with accessibility or ease of use. You need to download the client and then find the roms. You also need to figure out how to setup your stick/pad and then you will probably have router issues and need to forward some ports. The amount of work involved will turn some people off. While GGPO is awesome people just want plug and play, and that is not GGPO.

Guile had to go home and be a family man. You will no longer see that guy on GGPO. Anyways I ran some games with a few ST heads the other night. Seems like CigarGirl is always on there playing Fei Long. ST is fun and all, but I hate getting double perfected vs O.Sagat.

i’m coming back just because of this post. <3

I’m glad people don’t use it, because the GGPO servers are terrible as they are. It couldn’t possibly handle more players.

So which is it?

LOL.

And LOL @ screen name

The GGPO netcode and the GGPO servers are two different things.

You’re reaching now. I’d put a lot of money on the fact that you’ve likely never played on GGPO ever.

How much money are we talking here?

.

I’d be on all the time if there was a Mac version and I had a reliable connection. I only play SF4 because I don’t have any other options for competition at this point. I don’t have time to do much local gaming even though there’s a decent little scene around here. :frowning:

There is more to learn in ST than SF4 for the sole reason things matter in ST. You can win by positioning, baiting, zoning, throws, combos. SF4 is just another hit-confirm fighting game, it pales in comparison to ST cos everything pales in comparison to hit-confirmed combos in such games. Give ST a try - a good try - and you will not be disappointed. There are several links and help threads in the ST forums, and the ST section in the Wiki is the best one by a large margin. The amount of information in most characters’ pages is from 2 to 10 times what one sees in other wikis, and it is still growing.

And none of those things matter in SF4? Haha, okay then.

Great job omitting the next sentence, which would explain things. The one who confirms his combos wins, period. Oh, you beat a jump-in with a normal? If it does not lead to a super or ultra, you did nothing.

New games are not like that anymore. Combos > fundamentals, as Valle said here.
Edit: and zoning is not important in SF4, except vanilla Sagat.

I wish people would stop talking about games they don’t play or understand.
