You can love a game and not be willing to jump through hoops to play it a particular way. Still sounds to me like a huge number of people tried to set it up once, ran into some problem and said ‘fuck it, not worth my time’. Doesn’t mean they don’t/haven’t liked the game!
And seriously, distrusting a direct P2P service and ROM download sites isn’t unreasonable either. I mean sure its 99% safe (if you’re careful about those rom downloads), but that 1% is a real bitch.
I still think the real solution is to release packs of those games with GGPO-style net and a minimal menu overlay for console and PC download services. That’s the win/win/win.
I would play on GGPO nonstop if it wasnt for problems with ports and the fact that it is so hard to get in game. I used to play quite a bit of 3S on GGPO with a friend and I had to challenge him sometimes the upward of 10-15 tries before the game would decide to load. One day the game just wouldnt load. So we quit.
Also its hard enough getting in game with me with a friend, let alone explaining to a random stranger that he may need to try at this for 10 minutes just to get a few matches in.
I used to have that problem, I assume when your talking about that when you click to log in, nothing happens. What I did was uninstall Adobe AIR and Reinstalled an older version of AIR. I then Deleted ggpo and installed it again. Worked for me.
This is the problem right here, it’s hard to differentiate if some of the more hardcore GGPO supporters really want people to support GGPO for the games, or if they’re completely against the new-gen of fighting games simply because it threatens whatever playerbase they have left on GGPO…
Not everyone likes the direction Capcom has gone with their stuff, but many many people do. Doesn’t matter if they joined SRK the day SF4 came out or 5 years before it, trying to force players into different games by insulting them for “liking easy mode” or “cuz their fucking lazy and don’t wanna learn” ain’t gonna get you support worth a shit. Recommend the games if you like them, but if people aren’t interested(which unfortunately, GGPOs numbers can painfully signify depending how you wish to view them), they just aren’t interested. Some players will view SF4 the same way some of us see A2, CVS2, 3S, etc. Just let it go.
And as much as GGPO is great resource, stop acting like it’s some beacon of activity that the fighting game world is watching to see where it should go next. Every time a “What should they do next” thread comes up, someone(usually Shoultzula) comes in with a post proclaiming that “They shouldn’t even do a new game if nobody’s playing the old ones on GGPO”. Here’s a reality check: Capcom doesn’t give a fuck about GGPO population numbers. It’s more in their interest to get GGPO’s setup used in games they can sell, and if part of the deal is getting Ponder to stop supporting a free to play version if GGPO is used in the new one…that’s a trade off they’ll take over the loudest cries of player support. Unfortunate, but more likely than the belief that Capcom uses GGPO’s numbers to justify anything. Ono could tweet a pic of shit he took that vaguely resembles Morrigan and call it inspiration to do a DS game. Or simply do a poll on Unity.
Lots of players support GGPO in a positive way, but promoting it with aggressive, insulting posts at people’s reasons for not participating is pointless. Have Ponder create a GGPO gamerpic so you can reminisce about what it was like “Back in 'Nam” if GGPO is actually an issue of credibility for it’s users. 3SO came out and there was a player list in the forums “for GGPO players only” Anyone who was interested in playing these guys was excluded from the list. Probably not the smartest way to embrace new players into a community.
It doesn’t matter which, you could even try reinstalling the new version of AIR and see how that goes but to answer your question this is the one I used.
From the perspective of a person that still loves his old games, in particular mvc1/2, MSH, ST, Alpha 2/3:
It’s hard to stay motivated to play games that no one around me locally plays anymore.
Online play feels way off gameplay-wise vs offline.
Online play fails to capture anything close to the feeling of offline play from a social aspect.
I don’t play games on my PC, nor do I want to look at one at home after spending 10+ hours a day staring at a PC at work.
Why can’t I play these on my 360/PS3 like the rest of the current gen games?
How many people even know what GGPO is, even among the SRK members?
I get the feeling that newbies don’t bother since the info just isn’t out there for the old games. Who is active on the boards for the old games that isn’t there to troll or get into petty online pissing contests? Very few people are out there discussing strategy and tips for older games, so how are people going to learn, especially since even fewer people are still actively playing the games?
too many cheaters online, whether it’s lag-switches, macros, turbo, button bindings that never existed in the original games, etc…
I own the actual arcade hardware for a lot of these games and even then I don’t play it lately. Up until KOF13 finally came out for consoles, there was a group of locals around me that I could play with as they also disliked the other current gen stuff. That was fun. If KOF13 never came out and people around me weren’t playing it, I’d still be playing the older stuff with the same small group of people and eventually get bored of it like we were about to. There is only so much motivation when you are literally playing the same people over and over again and no one new is out there like it is for the current gen stuff.
IMO the easiest way to get people playing older games more would be to release them on 360/PS3 like they did with HDR/3S/mvc2. At least we won’t need to leave the couch for that and a lot of people that weren’t around for those games originally can try them out and maybe a few will stay and stick with it. I’m still not really sure why there hasn’t been a classic Marvel or Alpha release for console yet. Seems to me like either one would sell really well, just based alone on how popular those games were originally.
Unfortunately, people choose bot to play the newer versions because there’s usually stuff wrong with them. Still bitter that the 3SOE fanbase seems to have moved back to GGPO
And I still don’t know how people are even able to play 3S on GGPO anyway. There doesn’t seem to be a 3S room . . .
In a better reality than this one, GGPO, Supercade, or some equivalent would be open source and available (legally) on every platform, so console players and PC/Mac/Linux players can play together. Heck, even phone and pad people can join in. Also every emulated game would be supported.
In that better reality, copyright laws would be sane, so those old games would already be in public domain and free to download. And platforms would be open, so Sony/MS/Apple wouldnt be able to prevent you from running what you want on equipment you own.
I knew about this glitch before the DDoS attacks. Used it to play Magical Drop 3 before it got added. Now Rage of the Dragons and online training mode with hitboxes for Breakers Revenge.
I would play a whole lot more if I didn’t have this horrible error. If I try to map the buttons on my SE, there’s an error and it shuts down. If I click any other app while GGPO is running (i.e. Firefox, Skype, etc.), same error. I can play some matches sometimes but it’s really not worth the headache for a few matches.
I stopped when I got a PS3… and playing the newer games have gotten me uber rusty at the older ones, so I’m embarrassed to go back to it, losing harshly to people I used to rock easily. My Blanka in ST went from being one of the best on GGPO to being a joke… I forget how to do my combos… I forget what moves are priority in what matchups… pisses me off. I have to relearn the whole fucking game.
I was on GGPO last night playing Vampire Savior for the first time against other people
that shit is too fast and too complicated for my scrubby brain to comprehend
why would anyone play such herp-derp games like Vampire Savior when we have good quality games like Super Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3? :lame:
but yeah I’ll be on again tonight to give it another shot; hopefully I can win at least one match
I’m not trying to pick apart your post from one point, just that this one caught my eye. For almost every older game I’ve been playing, I haven’t had trouble finding up to date, relevant info. The exception was SF2 CE, where the only info I can get from that is pretty outdated… and maybe it hasn’t changed much.
But look on SRK boards and you’ll see active people and useful info for ST, 3S, VSav, Alpha 2 and 3, as examples. Enough game experts lurking around the boards to help you with specific matchup advice. There’s also great wiki info for all those SF games on SRK, and VS has another wiki. There’s also a ton of stuff on youtube ranging from character guides to just tons of high-level footage, so you can see what the experts are doing with your character of choice.
