Is it just me, or does Goku’s command grab seem like the most wortless command grab since Jill’s in UMVC3 ?
they look even more copy and paste they I thought they would, they really went full potato with the kid making a mugen character vibe on them. Like really goku blues elbow? Couldnt they just have switched the animation to his back or something. I was expecting a smidge more… Oh well ill fiddle with them and hope for the best

I wonder how hard Vegeta’s command grab scales. Especially since it does 0 damage.
It’s worth noting, too, that unlike, say, 16’s command grabs or Goku Blue’s command grab, Vegeta’s grab is barely telegraphed. It’s a very subdued animation that can be easily overlooked
I think Goku’s going to be a negligible character in this game. He lacks important options and tools. While he’s got potential for comebacks, he looks very technical with very inconsistent payoff. Kinda like a worse Tien. He’s basically working towards Spirit Bomb -> LVL3 Spirit Bomb to do much of anything. I could see him being picked up for his assist though.
THINGS THAT COULD CHANGE THIS:
- Kaioken enders cause hard knockdown
- Ki blasts hit low
- More viable solo Spirit Bomb (normal) combos found
- Significant damage outside Spirit Bomb combos
- His assist being bad
Vegeta looks more promising, but not immediate meta like Bardock. He does somewhat cool things, like having his projectiles being at incredibly sharp angles. He has options, but they’re all rather rigid, like Hit. The teleporting overhead and the command grab are both rather inorganic and manipulateable compared to any of the mixups given by Cell, Kid Buu, even Zamasu. That said, his LVL 3 leaves them in a prime spot for mixups, so something could be done. Overall he just looks kinda lackluster and without identity.
THINGS THAT MAY CHANGE THIS:
- The Knee Drop teleport allowing for airdash mixups with assist.
- His Disc’s effective area thanks to angling being absurd

Looks boring tbh. Base Goku, for all the hype he got, has almost all of his normals reused. Kaioken is basically a lv 1 super, when everyone thought it will be some kind of an install or a different mechanic. And the spirit bomb is again, a standard lvl 3 super. He will also be doing the same combos as everyone else, have the same gameplan and just play all around the same.
The characters in this game have just been way too ‘‘samey’’ from the start and this isn’t helping.

The opponent is barely animated when they get hit by base goku/vegeta command grab, it’s like they’re tossing a cardboard cutout around. Did command grabs in the base game look that bad?
Kind of sad that none of them have a beam assist. Considering switching Goku Black for Vegeta though.
If they nerf Cell to the ground I might replace him with Vegeta as a point character.
Also Goku’s 5LL pops them up into the air, I wonder if he’s able to combo 2M afterwards.
Would be cool if goku can raw tag after command throw to continue the combo, kind of like brolys lariat or whatever it’s called
I’m just happy about Cooler, tbh. Didn’t really care about base Goku and Vegeta.

Amen to that. Both Saiyans are mad disappointing. Cooler is arguably the best looking DLC we’ve had to date.
Also I bet 50 Bison Dollars that there will be a Janemba tint for Cooler
All I want to know is why was Sonic fox able to stall the match in Grand finals when we don’t play on arcade cabinets anymore?

Read his tweets. He wasn’t trying to stall. He has the ability as a player to take a break if he wants (it’s in the rules) he wanted the side switch because he specifically wanted player 1 because he executes better at start of round on player 1 side. The stall was from the tourney organizers not knowing how to enforce the sideswitch rule and having to debate with each other of it was even legal (it was/is) has they not fucked up the sideswitch would have taken less than 30 seconds. Anyways, SF is enough of a scumbag that he would that stalling was what he wanted to do, if that were what he wanted to do.
I don’t think there is an estimated stall time. We can assume about 2 minutes at best, but that’s not written in stone. A lot of people have given stalls like this before even in the top 8, they’ll wait on character select screen, wait on results screen, both select and results screen, etc.
Especially with how shameful one of the Smash tournaments ended (discussed in SFV thread), they probably are going to revise/enforce it a bit better. That one was garbage because that felt like collusion was involved and it just downplayed the experience. DBFZ grand finals was a player suggestion that certainly have been done a couple times in the past (or in modern times, it happened with MK9 a lot, but it was different for that game since Player 1 literally had hit priority over Player 2)
It was more than that. Half the crowd straightup bailing. Active booing before the match started. Competitors flipping the crowd off. It’s the kind of stuff that make me sad I play it and that the community has no dignity.
Look, I’m a Smash player as well as a supporter of DBFZ, SF, Injustice and Mahvel. There’s a certain amount of respect for the tournament that should trump both individual and mob personalities. It’s the biggest open fighting game tournament in the world. Have some damn respect for the game, the venue, and the players.
SonicFox taking some time to make a legal rules request was a bit of a fuck up on the part of the staff, but it’s not a real disaster like the final EVO of Smash 4’s life was.

The top 8 leading to Grand Finals for Smash 8 just got more and more toxic. Shit annoys me more and more that a majority of that community just cannot deal with this character that ain’t even broken.
I mean, how much of a threat were the competitors’ actions to the crowd in defense of them flipping them off? If it was some notorious heel-like actions, it may be justified for personality reasons… but it’s not something that I foresee Evo staff would tolerate either. I’ve seen people flip a competitor off, but never a crowd… and I also haven’t had a good look at top 8 entrances in person.
This is not the place to discuss that embarrassment, it was only tangentally related to the SF discussion as a comparison. The comparison was made and we should either move on, or shunt the discussion to the smash forums, lest we derail the thread.
