The Gem System Thread

Im gonna run a speed gem and two vitality gems when I run into dhalsim. Take your stretchy limbs and shove em.

i agree with your thinking however i wouldn’t want to put on an assist gem ever. im hoping all assist gems are banned from tournament play. i’m probably going to be putting on meter building gems, possibly attack bosst gems if i decide to run with akuma or rolento.

Why sn’t this thread a sticky anymore?

Gems are not all the rage anymore~ Glitches and Bugs are yo~

I’m really not seeing any intensive to not equip all Fortitude gems.

You mean incentive. Also, pick whatever gems you want.

Raven has a corner infinite with speed gems activated. cl.hp xx lp shuriken, walk forwards do it again.

I found a really great setup for gems. I equipped attack gems on both my characters. I usually wait until I get 2 bars (not long) before I abc tag my partner in. When I tag my partner in, I instantly get 10% damage boost for tagging him in. Do a combo into a super and u get very great damage.

I’m kind of disappointed in the way how they designed gems, but I understand why they’re so bland(besides assist gems).

I wish gems were to change the character themselves. Like each character having 10-15 gems that alters their normals/specials/supers and then add the gems that boost general stats. Wasn’t Ono’s original plan was to have customization where even mirror matches evolved into something more in-depth?

Another problem with gems in a tournament setting is that you need to be aware of what your opponents gems do in order to play around them. So activation conditions and bonuses. It’s not enough to just react and say “Oh he’s glowing yellow, I should probably back off because the risk/reward is worse.”

havent benn following
whats thte deal with autoblkock?
will it help me win evo?
or was them right?

I never got this. Gems have very easy activation conditions. I think a pro would be able to realize as soon as they went off what the requirement of it was.

First of all, my point is that you can play around the activation condition in the first place to stop the gem from going off. Secondly, do you really think even pros are going to count the number of normals/specials they’ve hit the opponent with?

absolutely. i havent played this game in about a month now, but at like week 2 i was thinking of combos, and specific block string combinations that would activate my gems as soon as possible

now im not “pro” or whatever, but if a mid-low level player can think of it, then i would assume that the best would already be ahead of the curve

if gems got used in tourneys, there is no doubt in my mind that people would begin to taylor game plans around activating them

I actually kinda forgot what I was arguing there, sorry.

I meant that even pros are going to have a hard time figuring out activation conditions mid-match if you don’t get to look at the gems because when you’re doing a combo and they glow yellow all of a sudden, you might not know exactly what triggered it.

I agree that if you know the activation conditions, you can play around them. But you can’t really know exactly what the bonus is or what triggered it unless you got a good look at the gem in the first place before the match. My point is that you need to know what an opponent’s gems are before a match, and I doubt any new selection system will show both players exactly what gems they picked.

Im seriously at the point in saying that I give two shits about Assist gems at this point. No gems at Evo for one and two, if you have shitty defense to begin with, chances are AutoBlock isn’t going to help you. There is no Gem that is a instant win button for scrubs, for someone who is competent however…thats a different story and it’s the current debate. Right now, I’m out of said debate because it effects me in no way whatsoever.

the general consensus on Gems is this.

-Boost Gems are ok for the most part, people want them in for a verity of reasons(make the game interesting, offsets time outs[debatable] and whatever).

-Assist Gems are bad and are not considered for competitive play(some people have been requesting for Lifebar and Pandora/Cross Assault Extent Gems). It effectively ruins Ranked Matches for a large % of the online community(this is by far the biggest issue[again debatable]).

Since Gems are outlawed at EVO, few offline scenes have been allowing Gems and the community is now warming up to the idea of gems if they can be done right. My standpoint on the matter is, Currently the Pay for DLC Gems(outside of the current unobtainable CE Gems) will only run you $4, a measly amount of cash…most people have enough rewards points on their Gamestop card to redeem $3 PSN credit, the Point is, the DLC isn’t expensive and it isnt going to kill you to buy it, DLC gems should be allowed. Agree or Disagree, it doesn’t matter until there is a change in the tournament ruling.

This is in regards to Sabin’s video on the front page, but I’m going to post here because 1.) Mods will chew me out for starting a new thread and 2.) Everyone else will chew me out anyway and this is probably the only place I’m going to get any support.

In said video, people are FREAKING OUT because the Cammy player is able to HOLD FORWARD and still be able to block! OMFWTFRUJKLOLGTFO!!!

What people overlook is the fact that upon reaching a certain distance, the Cammy player begins to attack, fishing for a combo. Now, in the theory of footsie play, the idea here is to move your character back and forth to screw up that distance. You can move forward and catch them a throw, or back up slightly and hit them with your own jab. The video does show this happening a few times, but seemingly on accident, since Arturo seems to spend a lot of time mashing short in a vain attempt to zone the opponent.

Even though tournaments are salty and don’t want to accept gems, they’re not impossible to play around. Regardless of what your argument is in contrary the previous statement, the bottom line of this discussion is the fun factor. Yes, gems can be played around, but is it FUN to play around them?

Where it matters…which are offline tournaments…Gems are ban. End of conversation.

They shouldn’t be banned.

Conversation continued.

I just watched the Arturo vid and then read the whole post.

Digiorno

Question?
Why shouldn’t Assist Gems (outside of maybe Pandora Extent and Cross Assault Extent) be banned? Boost Gems are fine…I support those.

I believe Crutches that literally break competitive play should be banned. Give me at least 5 reasons why if you disagree…
