The Gem System Thread

Amazing. Also, I’m wondering what Seth will have to say about tournament players wanting to use the gems now that the gems are banned at EVO.

How exactly is this a bad thing? I thought most of the community disliked how easy the inputs were in sf4.

exactly man. You’ve been on a roll for this whole page. spman2099 doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Ya, no problem.
When I read what Smithy said I really started to get worried.

The inability to enforce a no gem mode and the fact that certain gems are exclusive means that this game is off to a rocky start. This sucks too. I’ve been really excited for this game after Marvel left such a bad taste in my mouth. Everything up to this point seemed like the game was getting better and better. Then BAM! gems. lol.

I wouldn’t have a problem with them actually if there were no exclusives. Everyone should have access to ALL the game mechanics. I am all for trying new things and expanding the FG genre. Not problems with that. The gems system/customization is fine and dandy. It’s only when it becomes something that not everyone has access to that it becomes a (major) problem.

**Customization is great as long as it makes the game more fun. It’s not a 1:1 example but look at CvS2 with all those Grooves to choose from, it really allowed players to tailor the game to their own style of play…which is a good thing. The difference here is that ALL players had access to ALL the Grooves. lol, there were no “exclusive” grooves. **

Heaven help us if they start selling Gems. It will kill the game. Or it’ll turn in a disaster like Smash did. The community will have to make-up and enforce rules to cover the games failings. (btw i’m not a smash player lol just read about it here and there)

I’m stacking reality gems.

Reality is OP

To me it sounds like a ridiculous idea, what defines a fighting game isn’t just the strengths of the characters, the weaknesses are also what that defines them. You look at your opponent’s character and think about how you can exploit their weaknesses with the strength of your character, and you think about how to survive against their strengths with your character’s weaknesses. I have a hard time seeing how “covering your characters weaknesses” does anything but dumb down the game and reduce the strategies.

speed gems for me!

I wish. Hoarding the Power & Time gems made my childhood. This optional addition…it’s just not the same. :shake:

I liked the idea of gems when it was first announced.
I imagined gems would be unlocked by playing the game, like, finish Ken and Ryu and you unlock a gem.
I was thinking about, 10, 15 different gems, all balanced and with unique abilities.

But now, gems are paid? (At least 9 are)
You unlock them by buying packs of 9 gems (almost confirmed)?

And, 45 gems?
There’s no way they developed 45 equally balanced gems with unique abilities.

Or they are totally unbalanced and WTF, or duplicated, or with tiers, like “Lvl 1 Extra Damage”, "Lvl 2 Extra Damage"
Or all together.

Let’s seriously hope Seth is wrong or Capcom reconsiders their decision to not have a “no gem mode” in the game. We can figure out if gems work in competitive play later, but if they don’t, at least allow us a way out. “No gem equip rules” may work offline but they won’t work online except with friends.

Why wouldn’t there be a No Gem Mode?

Seriously, the outcry from today alone is enough to make Capcom reconsider this whole decision…

Very good point, even if you try stuff like “Increased Normal Damage” “Increased Special Damage” or “1.25x damage on counterhit combos” (basically stuff you can vary a lot), 45 at release still sounds like way too much. On the other hand, gems with tiers that were also DLC would be overkill I think, so it may not be that. Still, excellent point on that too.

Seth has been (indirectly?) quoted as saying there won’t be. It’s in the thread and could be inferred from my post as well…

i got no problem with Gems, how they can be used…people can run theroies sure…3 power gems max out at 40% damage increase…but at the draw back in having to wait longer for that boost…fair enough if someone has the Blue gems that affect your CrossGauge…shit think about someone having a 30% meter building boost…i’d go fucking nuts with tag cancels…

maybe…JUST maybe this is exactly how the game was ment to be played…you know…crazy… ridiculous…hype stuff~

I find this shit funny because…the same people who want to ban this shit are the same guys who love broken shit in fighting games in general…talk about irony…

i’d say have fun with it first before making the choise in banning it…what if…and go with me on this…What If…Gems make the game…omg im going to say it…Fun!..Broken, retarded…and absolutely nuts…but Fun…If you didnt ban jean in MVC3 off the bat…then don’t ban Gems…

I play to Win too but…Really?..

I am not sure if that really conclusively describes the pandora mechanic. We don’t even know its real applications at this point. Also, I tend to be very wary of those who state that something is “self-evident” as this is often used as a replacement for a valid argument. Epistemologically it is problematic to say the least…

(finally my philosophy minor is able to be put to some use!)

You are correct… I don’t know what we are talking about, not completely at least. That is because none of us know what we are talking about; this is pure theory led by assumption. That has been my position from the start. All I have been arguing is that we should take a step back in order to not make grievous assumptions.

However, I have said my piece. Those who can hear it, have heard it; those who can’t, never will.

The only games at Evo so far are Tekken 6, SF4, and MVC3. Not sure where they said this game would be played at EVO. :shrugs:

Whats wrong with that? Its been done with all the games before it.

The only issue I have with this gem system is paying for it, and the fact that some of them are only exclusive to certain users. If the game allows for people to unlock gems through regular game play through, then, thats fine with me. It gives players 2 options: 1. Unlock now but pay for it. 2. Unlock later, without any additional costs.

Capcom should atleast give us those options, especially when dealing with what appears to be a major part of the game.

Auto Block:

Based on the trailer:

1). the player has to meet certain requirements to activate these gems,
2). they stay active for a brief period of time
3). the character is illuminated with an aura when they are active, so opposing players know whatsup.

I am looking at this purely from a objective standpoint. Where in this game will autoblock be essential?

Assumption: I am assuming autoblock as it was in SF2/SF4.

Block String =>

Con:
They tried to mash during a block string, autoblock saved them.

Neutral:
We have had this in previous street fighters since SF2. No big deal.

Pro:
They were forced to give up a bar of meter.

Cross Assault =>

Con:
They blocked correctly, and it blocked 3 of the hits of my Cross Assault, and gave them an opening to counter me, and or escape

Pro:
They lost 1 to 3 bars of meter.

Some Random Unblockable =>

Con:
Somehow they were able to block my unblockable setup, and it reset, or left me at a disadvantaged position.

Pro:
They lost 1 to 2 bars of meter.

Does not seem like a big deal to me yet. But that is entirely based on how the Autoblock is implemented in this system.

Wait a minute, I get it now.

The final boss is Sonic the Hedgehog and he lost all the chaos gems in Tekkenfighterville and you have to collect them.

When you get all the gems your character gets a SUPER version and their skin turns gold and they can fly and deal damage by running into the opponent.

In the future, fighting games won’t even need to be released.

Companies will just “vaguely announce” them…maybe include a small detail or two.

And THEN, the experienced game developers of the SRK armchair community will magically predict how everything will turn out in their minds (like Jet Li in Hero) and tournaments will be won without a single button press.

Why stop at fighting games, folks? Why not try your amazing predictive powers in Vegas? The lottery? The stock market?

I mean, all the other knee-jerk predictions that this community has made for previous unreleased fighting games have been spot on, right? Is Dudley still top tier like everyone predicted? Remember when people thought SSF4 Guile would “still suck” because Capcom “barely did anything to him”? Remember when Adon had no hope? Remember when SF4 was suppose to die out after a few months?

We know NOTHING about this new system. Let’s not pretend like we do…until we do.

Kudos to Ono and co for actually try to do something fricking ridiculous. The genre needs more ridiculous. LIFE needs more ridiculous.

Indeed, so do I. However, these conclusions result from at least a basic understanding of mechanics, other fighting games and Capcom fighters/history in general. So in this case, your view is (let me try that philosophy) almost solipsistic in a sense. Denying everything because it is not confirmable; it is. Based on current knowledge (basic knowledge of fighting games/fighting game history, Capcom games/history in particular and stuff revealed about Pandora) Pandora is a comeback mechanic. It is almost the definition of one. It’s self-evident because well, there really isn’t anyway else this can go down based on our knowledge of how it works. The only part about it that is doubtful is whether it will work as intended and whether it will make the game worse. Additionally, I will go so far as saying that the idea of a comeback mechanic is self-evidently bad if looked at in any reasonable terms, but that’s really off-topic.

It’s actually pretty ironic that the position of knowledge (that I don’t absolutely claim to hold, yet I suspect you are somewhat new to fighting games on the level SRK understands them) is the one that looks close-minded. Funny!

Which is fair but the way you said it makes the people who spoke out look dumb, once again whether you intended to or not. In fact, I didn’t intend to say any of the things I pointed out in my reply to your post about the various mechanics being bad. Just that these were not unreasonable assumptions or hyperbole on the part of the posters you called out.

Are you telling me no prediction made for an unreleased fighting game has ever come true? Huge reversal windows will make offense harder: bingo! Being able to cancel shoryukens into Ultra will make SF4 retarded: another winner!

The thing that really worries me the most (besides possible DLC-exclusive gems) is the auto-guard gem. We all know by now how easy it is to gain meter. Burning one for a “get-out-of-mixup free” card sounds like utter garbage.

I’ll wait for more details to determine my feelings on the feature, but having ANY paid DLC in a fighting game that has ramifications on balance is horseshit.
