It’s really weird. They either just picked 3 gems or they’re still defining how many gems each character will have because every now and then screenshots show up with either 3 or 5 gems per character. 3 gems would certainly make the usage of the system far simpler for TOs but would limit creativity a bit - which might be a good idea. Using crutch gems like the autoguard/tech gems comes with a bigger burden since you’ll have less slots to do a good build on top of them.
I thought of something else that’s funny…
If Gems are SOOOOOOOO integral why aren’t you forced to pick them? Technically they are giving us a gem free mode because you don’t HAVE to load them
The bullshit from Crapcom is never ending…
LOL, you’re kidding, right? I could have sworn that people playing at high levels generally knew how to block correctly. Auto-Block is not going to be a big deal. It doesn’t activate if you’re pressing buttons, it costs 1/3 of your meter to block one attack string. If you’re whining about how that stops your mixup, then let your opponent waste all their meter auto-blocking your mixups, and treat it as if they were just blocking correctly anyway. Keep the pressure on, and guess what? They don’t gain any meter. Meaning after you drain their gauge, they’re open to mixups! On top of not being able to tag out safely, use invincible reversals (because only EX moves have enough I. Frames), use the more powerful combos, use Supers or Cross Arts because gasp those cost meter too!
Duh.
Some people are just making the simplest shit seem like such a big deal. Like Fallot. Dude spends multiple pages talking about how broken it is because someone can spend 1/3 of their meter and occupy a gem slot to make sure they block ONE mixup on Oki. Big Fuckin’ Deal.
considering some characters…like Ibuki solely rely off of Mix-ups…i would think its a big deal to them~
but w/e im not blowing it out of proportion either as most people do to try and get their point across…speaking of Crossing…
is anyone going to watch the new episode of X the Line when it comes out? because I don’t think I could stomach it~
i just want to know if they announce anything on the show~ which would almost make it worth watching~
First, those characters rely solely on mixups in SSFIV. Not necessarily SFxT. Second, so what if they do? You have more than one character. Third, I can only see this being a big deal if you figure getting a couple of your mixups blocked means an auto-loss. In which case I feel sorry for you when you fight someone that knows how to block. Take your meter advantage and keep mixing them up, they’ll have to either press a button or run out of meter eventually.
I doubt it.
It depends on the specific details of the characters, but it could also play out the other way, where meter is valuable to the point that using a bunch of meter to block her mixups means you can’t do anything really scary, so Ibuki’s best option is to just not give a fuck and go in all day.
well with that auto block Gem…you can mash out DP’s for free at that point…because it only blocks real block strings…
now in terms of mix-ups translation from SFIV to SFxTK may differ solely due to tech rolling on wake up. but even then you can plan mix-ups accordingly. Lastly if Characters like Akuma make it into SFxTK then…2 or 3 failed blocked mix ups usually lead to death…
Having meter to punish is great but having a vitality is also important too…
given that most characters can punish decently without having to burn meter off the bat make it so you can burn your meter on stuff like that Gem and still be ok. you’ll be building meter at a snails pace but if you still win…whats wrong with it?
im not saying its OP and im not saying is Garbage…please try to understand that its there for a reason. and people do have valid points, so do you~ im just trying to keep some kind of peace here as this thread is basicly as base for a shit storm
Auto block gem to me = Create a gap in your block string on purpose, and they lose a bar. Simple…
Because some people may not want to use them? You are forced to go through the gem selection screen, but you can not equip any gems.
It’s so “casual players can give themselves a handicap”.
But yes, if Gems end up banned, we’ll just not pick Gems in tournies.
Only if they’re pressing something other than block during your blockstring, which would be weird.
Frame traps still work though.
i get ya~ but what if they are mashing out DP’s? well if you read that…easy punish? haha
Anyway, because the opportunity cost of equipping auto-block isn’t “don’t have auto-block,” like it is in Alpha, it gets worse as you get better at blocking. Yes, you end up blocking the same amount of things for less meter, but if you’re good enough that you only need it every now and then, you have to weight it against the mileage you could be getting out of all of the other 200 gems, which can only go up.
Then they risk eating a raw Cross Art for half of their health. Remember, no FADCs to cover your gambles.
Sorry no, that’s the whole problem some people don’t get. They don’t understand the relative value of blocking a mixup for free. This is one of the most valuable things in any fighting game. They talk about the meter or the options you are losing without understanding this is something so integral and valuable that whatever else would be worthwhile would have to be incredibly ridiculous.
The better you are at blocking the MORE valuable it gets. If you’re blocking almost everything, having a gem that then covers the little slip ups is ridiculous.
That’s if we assume that the autoblock gem only activates if you don’t block yourself.
If you lose meter for blocking manually then that value is gone.
I agree, we need to wait a little while before we know what kind of impact it will have on the game. If you can manually block for free, it’s extremely useful (but in my opinion, threatens the integrity of competitive play). If attempting to block manually still costs meter (and blocking is even impossible when you have no meter), then it’s complete garbage and will never see any use beyond inexperienced players (I’m talking “person at a room party who’s never played a fighting game in their life” inexperienced) who just want to have fun.

The only moves with the invincibility to be good reversals so far that I’ve seen are EX moves. They cost meter, that you won’t have if you use auto block. Mashing DP will just get you counterhit.

Auto block will not activate if you’re pressing buttons.
As for the “value of blocking a mixup for free”, that’s the point. It ISN’T free. Some people don’t understand the importance of meter in this game. The value of blocking a couple attacks for the cost of your entire meter doesn’t outweigh the value of keeping your meter, getting another benefit, and just blocking correctly.
But that’s the beauty of this system. If you feel the added security is worth wasting the meter, you can pick the gem and roll with it. I’d rather just learn to block and pick something that actually helps me WIN, instead of something that covers a couple mistakes. Have fun losing to people that block well, and use the slot for a more effective gem.
Speaking of mixups, if I have safe mixups available, I’ll just play as I normally do. They’ll be out of meter for auto-block soon enough.
And once they’re out of meter for auto-block, they’re also out of meter for nearly every other mechanic in the game. And the only way to get that back is to take hits, use gem abilities, or attack, which leaves them open for counter hits or whiff punishes. You get the idea.
