Gems seems like a good idea for an online option for a ranking system of some sort. Based on everything I’ve read so far I just don’t see how it could function in a tournament. The way things are going I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t make an appearance on Evo’s main lineup.
wow wow ur wrong believe me SFxJ will be at EVO 2012
I’d have no real problem with gems, were it not for the stupid ones that are just meant to make the game easier for no reason. Namely, auto-block and auto-throw tech gems. SFIV is perfectly accessible enough, there’s no reason to try and make the system even easier. If Capcom REALLY wants to help new players, they could incorporate in depth tutorials to educate people on the importance of defense in fighting games (ala Skullgirls). Instead, they’re just helping new players avoid having to learn at all.
Yo… Seriously?
Man, enough with the “recycling complaints.”
If you didn’t buy SSFIV, then why the fuck are you in this thread? lol like, real talk.
…and whoever thinks SFxT won’t be at EVO, thanks to Gems is crazy. This is “Street Fighter,” we are talkin’ 'bout here. lol
EVO might start lasting for a whole week, if it’ll help SFxT. ikidikid
Typical self-entitled faggots.
They make basically a roster of new models that could comprise a game in itself, and you still expect the SF cast to be rebuilt from the ground up.
Have you never played a VS game before?
Still, won’t change anything in terms of the metagame. Top tier character and gem builds will still be found and used in tournaments (assuming gems are used). The only major issues are the whole “pay to win” thing with DLC as well as the (as of yet unknown) amount of time it takes to do custom gem builds.
A number system would be worse, being restricted to 10 characters. Unless you mean each combination of 5 gets assigned a different value (the first combination being “1”). You’d get a pretty big number for the “last” combination.
Even when the characters were painstakingly drawn 2d pixel sprites, Capcom’s rehashing of them was considered lazy behaviour. Never played a VS game what the fuck? This is like some Stockholm syndrome shit. How long did it take Eighting to bust out (better looking) models for MvC3? I’m sure Dimps wouldn’t complain if they had to make a new round of SF4 models.
Yea that’s what i mean
items on Dark Awake (Chaos Breaker) work kinda similar
I’d imagine they would have fewer gripes if the Street Fighter side of the cast was simply removed. Ta-da! 100% new models!
Okay, clearly this is going nowhere so after this I’m gonna stop replying.
Gems are a bad idea. Capcom fucked up. I don’t like it. Done.
It’s more than that. Assuming we have 500 gems in the game, and there’s five slots to fill, we’re looking at 255,244,687,600 slots. Unless I’m off by a zero or two, we’re looking at over a billion possible combos. Good luck balancing that.
On a lighter note, because we all need it, who’s in favor of nicknaming the Gem System as Synergy?

Gems may not even be DLC. I get the feeling that if people clamor enough, they’ll “just” be unlocks. Guess we wait and see.
or maybe they would be free (yeah right )
Well, we don’t care about the order of the gems, so, supposing there are 696 gems, we only need 1,341,564,623,784 combinations to be able to represent every possible gem set (instead of 163,322,567,294,976 if we do consider order, more than 100 times as many). Now, hopefully it doesn’t need saying that that’s still a pretty fuckin’ big number (more than quadruple the number of stars in our galaxy…), BUT, that doesn’t mean we need a ridiculously huge code to represent them. Taking our queue from phone numbers, the acceptable threshold is around 7-9 digits, but the fewer the better.
The simplest code we can use is all numbers (digits 0-9), there are 10 possible values for each character, so we’ll need 13 characters to make enough unique codes. That’s obvious, and obviously too god damn many, so fuck that. If we step it up, and use letters instead, (A-Z), we get 26 choices per character, which drops us down to only a 9 letter code. Not too shabby.
“But Reruns,” you might ask, “that’s only enough for 5 gems. What about the other character? Can’t we just have one code for our whole team?” Of course we can. There’s only one downside: we need to be able to represent about a whole fuckton more combinations; about one septillion overall. We really have no choice but to go all out and allow upper and lower case, as well as numbers, which is a fat 62 possible values per character, meaning we need a 14 character code to get all of those. If we go full retard and let the code represent your character choices as well, 15-16 characters (ugh) is enough to skip the process completely.
Of course the other downside to all this is that it’s basically a simple compression algorithm which means there’s some processing time attached to the lookup, even if it could be done fairly efficiently. So, while it might not be the absolute worst thing in the world, there are definitely better ways of going about it.
tl;dr: I basically agree with you. If I was a dev and really concerned with streamlining the selection process, I don’t think passwords would realistically be on the table. The primary solution to this problem is, without question, interface design. It’s not a huge deal to change it, so when we finally do get to play around with it, I strongly urge you all to pay attention to details and give good feedback about what does and doesn’t work.
Hopefully they’ll listen to the shitstorm these DLC packs are brewing and go with the unlock route.
as if capcom would give up even a CHANCE to milk their “fans”
they tried to sell us shitty colors and shitty match footage in 3so, what makes you think “lol maybe they wont try to screw us over!”
I really don’t get how you people are thinking that gems are some balancing factor in this game. There will still be top tier gems that beat all other combinations, who gives a fuck if you’re faster if you get 1 touch deathed with the right gems.
Like D3v said the metagame will get to a point where over 80% of the gems will probably be useless. How is a game balanced because maybe lowtier hwo uses the right attack buffs, when maybe toptier kazuya can just do the same and still out damage him.
That’s not actually a problem at all. Did you know that in Magic: The Gathering, they print bad cards on purpose?
I don’t think 1 touch of death with be easy to achieve in this game. Maybe if you some how activated all 5 power gems for gief in pandora and did his super and or just his special you’ll die.
I’m thinking this game will just revolve around resets and stuffs ya…
thats the point i’m trying to make…
I’m arguing against the pipe dream some people have that Gems will be some all balancing factor where the billions of combinations need to be balanced and whatnot.
as if more than maybe 7 combos will be the best
ALSO regarding TCG’s, they way you acquire them is completely random, and the bad cards are based off of rarity… but there are still useless rares etc.
oh man if buying gems dlc wise came in random boosterpacks… god help us all
