The Gem System Thread

seth - poongko putting people on notice, all red gems and he just downed a red bull, he means business!

Do what the Japanese do, you pick one team for the entire tournament. Screw that counter picking bull. Plus you have two character right? pick one to counter rush down players, pick one two counter defensive players and find a way to make it work and we should be able switch the order of who goes 1st when each round starts

This is just ignoring the problem. The gem system will make this game a real lag on tournaments if it isn’t implemented properly and efficiently, and when it comes to that sort of thing Capcom doesn’t give me the best impression…

I couldn’t help myself. Had to make this.

It’s funny that other companies(NRS,Skullgirls Mike Z,etc) are trying so hard to make their fighters more tournament friendly while Capcom is just like “whatever you’ll play whatever we tell you bitches to play matter of fact here some more shit to work around in your cute little tournies. Hold Dat”

You guys should check out a post I made back on page 12 explaining how I think gem selection will take under 30 seconds, rather than 2-3+ minutes.

I essentially made a terrible Photoshop mockup of a gem interface and broke down the amount of button presses it could potentially take, and the likely amount of time it would take to execute those button presses.

Obviously it’s a rough estimate, but I think it may be in the realm of possibility.

If you disagree, I’d love to hear your thoughts on things, thanks.

Maybe not under 30 seconds, but I think it works. It’s more-or-less how I imagined it would be. It would mainly be player indecision that would keep things from moving quickly. Putting the button config menu at the character select screen, or at least having a “restart match” option in the pause menu, would cut down a significant amount of time lost during button checks. That would make up for the extra time that gem selection would take, I think.

And it’s funny that it doesn’t matter how many times Capcom give us the finger, people still buy their games, still play them and still play tournaments of them.

Button config could be as fast as in Arcsys games and HDR but you saw what Capcom did about that in SF4 and MVC3.
What makes you think setting up gems won’t be a pain in the ass then?
Keep in mind that Capcom still doesn’t think about tournament players when they develop the menus and UI (and the game systems too </salty>)

Yeah, that is true. I’m just being optimistic.

I don’t even necessarily think the potential interface I provided is anything too special, they could probably do more to optimize it (but that I don’t see happening)

I’m just hoping they don’t have like a list 1 wide and 200 long with uncategorized gems that all have unique names that aren’t something simple like numbers. If they did something like that it would be an absolute nightmare, for sure.

i’ll answer these to the best to my ability.

  1. in some depictions of the system it shows characters equipped with 3 or 5 Gems so im guessing it ranges from 3~5

2)you equip Gems to each of your selected character.

2a) this does not seem likely as Gems are not pre-set systems but rather a change to the individual characters playstyle.

2b) this seems more likely and may have a branching option for Gems in general i’ll give me take on it.

Character select - Color Select - Super Art Select - Gem Select - Pre-set Gems or full custom.

i hope this helped.

“Poongko with that new Geology!!”

Ok, I’m done now :).

Purchase? I’m sorry it sounds like you’re suggesting the gems get used up completely and have to be bought again. I’m assuming you just mean that a person would have to change his gem sets between matches to fight different opponents? If that is what you mean, that could indeed be a hassle to organize. However if just a couple of non-DLC gems were allowed and Capcom streamlined the whole process I think it could be workable for tournaments (I can’t say for larger ones though, having no experience in organizing any of a large scale).

That’s an entirely new problem though, because banning some non-DLC gems and allowing others would not be justifiable I think. Even if it was, a consensus would require a fair bit of time and a lot of play. I’m quite looking forward to more info on gems, I’m certain Capcom is going to surprise us.

Now whether it’s a pleasant one or not I’m not so certain.

I wonder if system will have ratios? Let’s say everyone’s favorite gem, the Auto-Block, takes two slots.
And I wonder if you can equip multiples of the same gem, and if they’ll activate at the same time? 5x “+10% speed gems for landing 5 hits”

Way too many questions are left to be answered, I’ll be extremely disappointed if the next build doesn’t have gems.

The “gems stacking” question has been answered: You can have more than 1 gem of the same type (I think that depends on the gem though). They talked particularly about the +damage gem, you can stack up to 3, they’re activated one by one (after activating one you need to fulfill the conditions to activate the next, etc.) and the 3rd one gives +20% bonus instead of +10%, for a total of +40% damage.

Are people seriously even considering SFXT as a tournament game? They got fucking deals on how many gems you’re getting as preorder specials and shit.

This game is a joke and is now dead to me.

I think some people are hoping this game replaces AE at evo and are holding out hope for it. Of course I think it’s more likely that SFxT misses Evo because Evo is already trying to ban Gems immediately without much info on it.

Most pre order stuff is not important or very useful nowadays so I’m really thinking people are overreacting on this Gems as DLC thing. The pre-order Gems are probably early access to some Gems you could unlock by yourself by playing a few hours, or weaker versions of Gems you can unlock later.

Most companies rarely make pre-order things important because they aren’t making money on it the stores are.

Svensson: From the game’s product manager:

  • The SE includes 36 Gems (4 packs) and if you pre-order you get a 5th pack for a total of 45. The one pack that is forgotten in the post is the 4th pack, the SE exclusive “King of Iron Fist” GEM pack.*

  • The pre-order is the Cross Arts GEM pack.*

  • The following packs are included:*

  • World Warrior*

  • Iron Curtain*

  • Lightning Legs*

  • King of Iron Fist (special edition exclusive)*

  • Cross Arts (SE pre-order bonus)*

Well then…I’m sure that…umm…all those… are…useless…* slowly exits thread*

Maybe… Caocom doesn’t intend for this to be taken so seriously and they’re leaning toward ‘fun’ and ‘flexibility’. Their tourny pillar is clearly SF4 with how much they work on it year after year, and MvC3 satisfies the hype junkie crowd similarly. SFxT is probably Capcom’s Mortal Kombat (2011). Can be taken fairly competitively, but not meant to be dissected in theory fighter fashion. You guys are doing that right now and just doesn’t sound right applied to this game.
