The Gem System Thread

I really did not know where to post this here or in the Pandora mode thread but…

The most positive thing ive thought of for the gem use is to beef up Pandora mode…think there is a Chip damage modifier Gem? >_>;

So, just to check I understand this correctly:

We can opt at any point to not use Gems, meaning it’s easy for tournaments/casual versus matches with friends to play without this system, but as of yet there are no plans for a strict “No Gems” mode (i.e. where neither player can use them) for online/offline? Or do we not know on that front? I’ve no issue with the Gems in principle- though I dislike how Capcom’s handling the marketing (exclusive pre-order Gems? Gems- most likely better Gems- as paid DLC?)- but I do want to be able to choose whether they’re on or not for online play. It would be awful if you’re forced into using them whenever you play online because you can’t prevent your opponent from picking them.

I’m sure we will be able to turn them off online.

Sounds like gems work the same way as UMVC3’s new mode. And they both sound a lot like the sticker album from Subspace Emissary from Brawl. Only non-passive. So most likely an option for certain modes, and the standard for story mode.

Edit : Also to add. Since both UMVC3 and Street Fighter x Tekken are both getting hand-held versions. More laid back modes are necessary for that platform.

From the UMVC3 Discussion thread when comparing Gems to Heroes and Heralds…

Psychoblue mirrors my thoughts exactly. All we’ve seen are 2 very situational damage boost gems, and the auto block auto tech. I’m really looking at this as a create an ism system more then trying to meet requirements to get 10% more damage for 6 seconds.

anyone know if there actually will be some form of customization similar to tekken? (different colors, clothing, and other misc stuff)

Interview with S-Kill on the Gem system. Although he’s still being quite vague, he does mention that “everyone will have acess to the same set of tools”.

Maybe they are still thinking about wether Gems will be DLC or not.

After thinking about it some more and reading some posts, I’m actually excited about the Jem System. I can give my mixup teams more power or more defense on my characters, making my dynamic duo super dynamic. That being said, I’d like to see there be a Jem-less mode (but Poison is allowed) just in case the whole thing goes down the crapper.

gems are prob going to be retarded, i was kinda hyped for em a little but now with auto block and auto teck… put em both on and pick a grabbing character…

i guarantee that in a month we will all be using the same sets of gems per character, with like a few switch ups.

If you ask me, the Gem system seems really interesting. I’m going to remain optimistic for it because I actually like the idea of having a character play the way I want them to. I’m actually a fan of these personalization kind of things.

Do remember that stuff like that cost a meter.
So it might SEEM super imba and retarded, but it will cost them a meter, and it happens automatically.

You could potentionally break their meter by throwing out a dummy throw so his autotech gem activates and you burn away his meter, causing him unable to do EX/Super Art/Cross Art…

I can’t believe I’m saying this…but it does sound somewhat…neat…

Exactly. You’ll know when their gems are activated, so you can either ignore them or force them into burning meter.

The only issue that needs to be sorted out is the DLC shenanigans. Aside from that, it sounds like a really cool system.

Yeah. If the DLC gems are just saving you the time to unlock the gems its cool.

I totally agree, new game should mean new mechanics. I was absolutely uninterested in this game until i saw this thread. I think the whole gem thing will actually make the game worth playing and not boring.

Gems will add variety in the game no doubt. For the good or for the better were gonna have to wait and see.

I dont agree with DLC gems. I mean, the preorder gems are enough. Hopefully you can unlock the gems from in game. IMO, if there HAVE to be dlc gems, make em free. If not, let it be

The whole game is starting to look really awkward, I cant believe I was hype for this at some point.

From a business perspective though, I can respect the decisions Capcom is pulling of with this one. It seems their going with the Riot games strategy of integrating game play tightly with DLC purchases. For anyone who does not know what that is ; the gem system is looking to be very similar to the way you can boost your heroes in League of Legends.

That in mind we will probably see a handful of usable free gems and a set of variably priced gems that are gonna be significantly better, based on how much cash you are willing to throw ofcourse.

Its kind of brilliant to bring in this kind of a potential cash cow with the new fighting game boom, It takes alot of integrity away from the scene sure but hey maybe Skullgirls will be better.

Like all pre-order DLC, I imagine they’ll eventually get released for those who didn’t pre-order it. I’m going to assume that the pre-order gems are going to be along the lines of System Direction rather than the individual stat changes. If so then they’ll be banned from tournament play.
