The Games

…so instead of commercial success and popularity increases, you’d rather have…

Well…I don’t really know what you want, to be honest. All I know is you’re batshit insane.

Evolution is a console tournament. Maybe STHD might be done by then. I don’t think people would care if it’s 100% done graphics wise, just as long as it plays like ST should.

Smash!? Nah!

So he’s just stating a pretty legitimate opinion and now he’s batshit insane? Some people’s favorite Evo games are the older Capcom games and it’s a serious thing when one of those games has a good chance of getting kicked out this year. There’s definitely nothing wrong with liking the old days. That’s all he’s saying. I already went through why SRK is doing otherwise and he already knew it before I even posted it. Trust me…he knows what he’s talking bout. He said he’s not trying to take away from the event…that definitely qualifies as NOT going batshit.

I’m sure there’s other old school players that feel the same way. Some people still aren’t particularly happy about Evo being a console tourney. Some people just prefer the feel of an arcade cabinet.

The DC version of ST is totally fine, as confirmed by NKI. The only problem is whether the Evo staff really wants to deal with not only running a game on Dreamcast, which is already proven to be an unreliable console for tournaments, but obtaining Japanese Dreamcasts and official copies of a long out of print Japanese game that never got a particularly large print run in the first place. And then there’s the problem that it takes people forever to configure their buttons thanks to the Japanese language, which takes away from the short running time of ST, one of the games major advantages for a tournament organizer.

I really don’t want to see ST go, it’s my favorite fighting game, but I can kind of understand it being dropped if STHD isn’t a viable option at this point.

None of the three games deserve to be cut, and it’s going to be a shame for whichever player base loses out at this years Evo. I’d love to see the staff open it up to 7 games just so all these great titles can be included, they all have a place at evolution and they all bring a good turnout, but there are limits on resources and time, hopefully whatever does get the cut will have an understanding community who will strive to prove their game belongs back in the following year.

Co-sign

no games, cept any gg game.

couldn’t burned games be an option now that evolution isn’t sponsered by toyota anymore?

I’d imagine they’d want to maintain their legitimacy. And what game would need burns? We got no imports in the line up. Dreamcast marvel?

Nope. They’re still obviously getting media coverage from different gaming sources like they have since B5. Gamespot TV (now known as XPlay) came to cover the event when it was still being held in a college. The last thing they need is one of those sources leaking out that Evo endorses the use of burned games. That means no more Evo.

4r5…I would guess Rickstah is assuming the DC version of ST is used at Evo. Considering ST gets in in the first place.

X2

smash is the most “mainstream” and most played game there, out of the 6. but the game has only been out for a short while, the tier list and level specific rules might not even be fully agreeed apon in time, but i like it. Are they going to have smash at all the evos (north, east…) as well. I’m sure there will be some crazy kids who play it for 20 hours a day just top figure out all the stats for every character just in time.

lets go, Guilty Gear

The problem with CvS2 now is that the game is slowly beginning to lose its pace. Japan doesn’t have major tournaments for it anymore (Tougeki being the mother of all tournaments, of course), and the players that once dominated the scene such as Kindevu, OTK, INO, Mago, etc. have more or less stopped playing the game seriously or have stopped playing it all together; BAS is one of the few top Japanese players that still plays the game at a tournament winning level. CvS2 at Evo last year was kind of testament to how much Japan plays the game anymore, with most of the Japanese players known for CvS2 not even making it top eight.

I believe the game is doing better here in America, but nothing has been done to breathe new life into the game. Generally the same players make top eight at Evo, and there hasn’t been many new, strong players in years save for Gene Wong. Someone already pointed this out, so going into detail isn’t really needed. Don’t get me wrong, CvS2 is a great game and it can have some great moments in finals, but seeing it on the chopping block isn’t exactly surprising.

The way I see it, GG, ST, and CvS2 all have valid reasons to be cut.

CvS2:

  • Takes a long time to run.
  • Doesn’t get as big of numbers as some other games
  • The scene is currently stagnant and hasn’t really grown

ST:

  • No good console port
  • Doesn’t get as big of numbers as some other games

GG:

  • Major community fuck up last year during finals

Actually, the more I think about ST, the more it seems likely it’ll be cut due to a reliable console port being unavailable at the moment. Even if CvS2 and GG have their issues, it seems like those two games will take the final slots.

my bet is ST and CVS2 being next…

Yes; the old days of -anything- are never as good as some people remember them, and also, I’ve never really seen anything that paints Nokato as opposite to what I think of him: someone who really really really liked the past, even though it was balls, and puts every other thing that comes by on a pedestal so high there’s not enough limestone on the planet to even build the thing, much less reach it.

There’s really no reason to believe that -any- game is going to replace ST (unless it’s STHD) or CVS2, considering VF5 unfortunately doesn’t have the players, and Guilty Gear’s community is just full of apathy.

And he damn well better know why they’re doing otherwise, he’s probably had it explained to him by multiple people in multiple threads over and over again. When a person is essentially saying “I’m not really trying to take away from the event, but fuck the game that’s going to bring in 400 people, it’s not really a fighter, I want the 80’s back! Where’s the Beef?!”, they’re not really all there. If you want the old days, you can have the old money, the old hotels, and the floundering community, which almost died because of shit like this; people’s inability to accept that things change, for the better.

Then fuck them too! You want the cabs? Buy enough for Evo to use and then bring em. Pssst, that’s not really a viable option, both financially and in trying to accomodate 1500 people with so few cabinets.

C’mon CVS2!!!

Damn 4 possible game 2 slots >.< two community not going to be happy

Damn it, when I made that statement I was talking about AC. LOL, I must’ve really been too vague for my own good. Personally I feel CvS2 should definitely be downgraded to side tournament, but I just didn’t say that because then I’ll be on the chopping block. The majority of CvS2 entrants will already be at the tournament for 3S or Marvel (or possibly ST in some form), so I never felt the game needed to be touted as a featured game when some much-needed balance can be added to the main roster in its place. And I don’t mean the Smash kind of balance.

Oh. My bad then.

CvS2 is freaking dead here. Hell, it’s never been ‘alive’ to begin with on the East Coast, and tournaments in SoCal about the only lifeline the game’s got left. I love the game mind you (I’ve been playing it since day one) but it’s got to go.

I’m all for GG making it in. Outside of that it’s a surprise.

me want ST and GG!!!
