You also have to consider that a lot of main stream gamers and casuals are sheep and will regurgitate anything their eSports celebrities and idols spout out good or bad. It didn’t help that people kept spraying the same banter over and over.
Still, the future of this game doesn’t look too bad. Look if you guys want to indefinitely support the game, Capcom is right there with you. Show up to your nearest majors and the Capcom SF25 events. We’ll see how the game does online and offline after they give away the car. That’s apparently when the deadline is! (lol)
But yeah, Season’s Beatings and NEC still have SFxT right? It might not be streamed but I would love to see some camera footage anyways. Gives that old school arcadey sneak peak footage goodness. Like it’s legit.
Anyone live around Troy? There is a place called Pastime Legends where, on Thursday evenings (starting at 6 pm) they have set-ups where you can play fighting games, and I believe they stream some of those matches. They haven’t been playing Street Fighter X Tekken, but someone should bring their own set-up there and show off the game. I’d do it myself, since I have a really powerful laptop to run the game, but as luck would have it I have an evening class on Thursdays this semester at that time.
Idk, aside from Ryu’s safe donkey kicks (the reason i call em safe is cuz if you to try and punish they can mash out a dp and BAM 50 perc life gone) and certain moves whiifing, like hwoarangs super after a CLEAR juggle, i really have no qualms about this game. I like it more than sf4 cuz its faster i like it more than marvel cuz its not as cheap, Justin Wong said he likes the game because he feels like he’s in CONTROL of sfxt and theres no solid comeback mechanic, which is why a majority of people seem to get mad, saying pandora is useless because it cant one touch death anyone, but i agree with Jwong and i just really like the game and im gonna keep playing it, whether it dies out or not
Some things I learned about SFXT here at SRK.
1)Most people now like it, some even love it.
2)Many still love to troll over it, even some of those that now like it still troll.
Why?
It gets attention(good and bad) because thats what awesomeness does.
I, too, enjoy this game quite a bit. And it’s not on some ol’ “fanboi zomg capcom” ish. I started my fighting game ‘hobby’ with Tekken 2 and played every Tekken up to current (Paul then Lili mains) and ended up falling in love with SF4. To me, the best part of all the fighting games I have played, from the Tekken series, to SF4, to SFxT is the depth behind the games once you get past the ‘casual’ gameplay. Yes I know SF4 isn’t the end all be all example, but if you look at SF4 from where it started to today, it was a game played VERY casually by the masses - there was no end to random wakeup reversal FADC (or even without FADC). There was no end to the amount of mashing in between strings. A large amount of the player population seemed to have issues with simply pressing BACK or DOWN BACK.
How does this relate to SFxT? The stigma that people in general seem to carry with SFxT is a result of the ‘casual’ style gameplay we saw early on, even from the ‘professionals’. I have seen some good criticism (and a lot more false/near sighted bashes) about the game and hope to address some of it (I may be repeating some of the sentiment of others, but it’s worth repeating):
*Throws - When I first started SFxT, yes, this annoyed the hell out of me. Why when I go for tick throw am I always whiffing throws? Why am I getting jabbed out so easy? You see, instead of just being frustrated (which I was) I decided to figure out how to work around that. At this point I find that throws in this game are actually very useful. The key is training your opponent to expect heavy pressure and once they realize that they need to block or eat 30%+ life, they will start to hold back/down-back more. This is where I start my throw game. In every match I play, throws are present and play a decent role, whether by me or my opponent.
*Technicality - I find this game to be one of the more technical ones I’ve played. Yes, random scrub 111 will still use mostly chain combos into some weak follow-up (leaving you with tons of grey health), but when you start fighting other players that have put in time or understand the mechanics, the game becomes incredibly deep. Dropping damn near anything in this game gives your opponent the chance to score major damage. This forces you to make sure your links are on point. It forces you to play smart instead of being random. Eating an AC unexpectedly makes the opponent think twice about how they want to pressure. Launcher against crouch-attack heavy opponents is wonderful, and it’s not as if it doesn’t come with its own risk (huge recovery). You almost always have options and both players (at a decent level of skill) are required to both think about their situation and the situation of their opponent throughout the match.
*Comebacks - I really don’t see what the issue is here. I remember all of the complaining when SF4 first dropped that Ultras seemed to reward poor play. I love that there is no real comeback mechanic. YMMV here, but the take away is that if you want to win, you punch, kick, throw the shit out of your opponent until they are KO’d. To me, the comeback mechanic is the player. I’ve been both on the giving and receiving end of a comeback victory due to excellent play. If I’m beating the crap out of someone because I am playing smarter, landing my combos with more consistency, etc, why should they be rewarded with a ‘life equalizer’?
All in all, this game is a blast to play beyond the casual level. I still fight opponents that play ‘day one’. And instead of getting rude with them, I usually offer them insight. You’d be surprised the number of decent discussions that ensue. A lot of guys (for whatever reason) still don’t know about some of the mechanics of the game. Some guy was furious about the pressure my Lili was putting on his team. Afterward I explained to him that he could have had several counter-combos on me if he had used launcher against some of my blockstrings. The next time I played this guy, lo and behold he was using launcher against certain setups. This changed the dynamic of our fights greatly. He felt foolish for his previous anger and jumped on voice chat to thank me, and asked for more pointers.
I understand that there are a lot of silly things that had this game making one step forward and two back, especially for tournaments (the whole gem select fiasco). Personally, I don’t even bother with the gems. It actually feels that much better winning without them, but I can’t fault someone for using them if they want.
I have to admit, though, that some of the little things do still bother me, like the stages (colors mostly). But as a fighter, SFxT holds its weight. You know why you ate that huge combo (shoulda been blocking or shouldn’t have mashed through that blockstring or shoulda used alpha counter on that pressure…). As with everything in this day and age (not just fighting games, or games in general) social ‘pressure’, if you want to call it that, can make or break a product. The huge outcry over some of the stuff in this game from early on still follows it, which speaks volumes to the power of hive-mentality.
I, for one, will happily support this game. The best way for me to do that right now is to continue to attend locals/tournies and to work with newer players to help them understand the system.
So the future of the game.
The future of the game atm is still undetermined.
Why do i say that?
Well the year still has 3 more months to it and there a few more majors in the year to go out and actively play sfxt.
How do we ensure a better future for the game. First show someone the game. Anyone. Teach them some things. Show them players. Go out to some local tournies. Convert some friends into sfxt players and be the guys who play sfxt. In va there are 3 of us who go hard in sfxt. 2 outta 3 made top 16, my friends eliminated me. One of us made top 8.
Try to educate instead of argue. If you argue you’re only just flinging crap at that point. Everyone has a different way of teaching. If anything the best approach is to just jump into the game. Easy to get into but the deeper you go the more the game shows it’s options.
You guys have to be more and more active. Sfxt is on that copse of falling off the radar or gaining enough steam to stay in the public eye.
How to be active
Go online and play. The second that the online dies we lose a vital outlet.
Go out and play even if it’s by yourself. This is why you covert friends to play with you so you don’t have to play alone.
Make things interesting. If people in maryland agree, we will have a money match between va and md at our next monthly. That’s getting the attention of sfxt and starting a rivalry.
Go out to tournies, both out of state and local.
If we all work together to ensure the future by doing some of these things then our game will be not only fun but more active. It’s all up to you all in the end. I’m doing my best by hosting endless battles and teaching new players how to play my character lili.
I hope each one of us finds a way to keep this game going.
My sentiments exactly. And funny that we both play lili (ibuki x lili here).
Word.
I LOL’d.
I’m happy with the game’s trajectory right now, I think. There are so many competitors out there that my initial hope (that this would be the “new” SF4 and be the default game for a while) could never have been borne out. All most games can really hope for now is a sizeable and dedicated community, and some representation on the bigger FGC platforms. SFxT is actually doing really well in those respects, especially in terms of the community, which is pretty much the most constructive community I’ve seen around (Having dabbled in the SC, Tekken, SF4 and Marvel communities). It’s amazing what mass opprobrium can do to a group of people.
With the increasing acceptance and interest from mainstream players, the influx of newer players from the patch and new character release, and the increasing level of play that you’re starting to see here and there, I think, if things keep going well, that we’re off to a good start with SFxT.
Welp…during my walk today i thought of something hype we could do like once or twice a week until it gets old.
Weekly grudge matches between players.
stream it, build up the match, and other stuff.
atm it’s just an idea but i want to think if we could use this in the future.
First match could be me vs my friend will08 in a first to 10 MM. Shit talk included. Oh boy do we talk some hella shit…
What do you all think?
Sounds fun! I was thinking of doing something similar, but instead I was going to put myself out there and take any challengers (on PSN, don’t have an XBOX anymore) in a FT5 or FT10. I know I’m not the best out there, but I think I’m pretty damn solid. I guess I need to add some shit talk to it… Who here on PSN thinks they can beat me!?!?! No one! That’s who.
oh snap. Careful tatsu may be lurking these here parts…O.O;;;;;
that’s right
know your place, cur.
Is that a challenge!?
EDIT - BTW Tatsu, I played you a few times in SSF4 with my Ibuki vs your Vega. Good times.
imagine if someone told you they "would not play any game that was as airdash heavy as sfxt"
that’s how silly you sound right now. seriously, just stop talking about oki in other games. you have very little actual understanding of other games. if you know about sfxt oki and feel it is fair, whatever. but you can’t compare to games other than maybe sf4, so dont try.
or maybe characters could have real pokes/neutral options. nice broken window
You dare challenge Tatsu’s crown rank? Abandon all hope, ye who enter
I’m up to watch tatsu slaughter some people again.
Only if the competitors also include challenge raps which they then upload to youtube.
Ultra’s are still avoidable. If you’re eating one chances are you effed up somewhere.
X-Factor is a horse of a different color…you or your opponent has free reign for the remaineder of the draining meter and you’re afforded some of the most ridiculous buffs.
I don’t see how you get boring from either of those unless you hate miraculous comebacks of any kind. Desperation Moves anyone?
