I’ve never played it… When it came out, I was already playing Quake, Turok, and Goldeneye, and was naive to think it was a step back, despite how much I loved the originals.
Really looking forward to tackling it after I beat Eternal.

Man…just finished the 1st part of the Cultist base aka stage 3!!
This is the level that will be the gate keeping level for a lot of the newer players and those that developed bad habits…like my dumbass on a few occasions.
That stage trying real hard to teach me to use the flame thrower.
Edit: The Muraders a hell of a difficulty spike. Pretty lame ass enemy if you ask me.
Unpopular opinion:
This games terrible. I’ve literally spent the last 20 minutes failing at a dash jump into dash refill on I believe the 2nd level. I want to rip and tear not play shitty gymnastics simulator 2020.
What system are you playing it on?
I’m on PS4 and found the “Tactical” control setting (which puts the jump on a shoulder button) much better in all regards as I can aim/look as I jump.
PC with an xbone controller
K, if you haven’t tried mapping jump to a non-face button, you may want to. It helped me.
I got pretty far last night and I think one legit solid negative about the game is too much fucking platforming. 2016 had it but it didn’t grind progression to a halt like it does here multiple times.
I’m only maybe a third of the way through the Cultist Base (3rd level), but I actually like it so far.
… was at the two round pillar section in Cultist Base before the 2nd Secret Encounter, but only because I died like 8 times during that challenge and had to keep redoing the platform bit, lol
I think this game is f’ing awesome. I was keeping reservations a bit yesterday because of how different it was from 2016, but I’m really digging the changes now.
Ultra Violence is definitely hard on the first run-through. I usually die a few times at all of the harder arenas, until I figure out the lay of the land and build up a strategy. Hurt Me Plenty would probably be better, but in a few cases, I found it too easy.
The only thing I really want is more ammo capacity, especially for the Super Shotgun, but I know I will expand that in time.
Also, is it me, or does the Flame Belch do like no damage at all? I was hoping it would be a way to kill guys (like the chainsaw) but as far as I can tell, it only puts them in a state to collect armour from. I typically don’t use it in an arena, but will against the possessed or other singular enemies in between.
Also, the Saving Throw rune is a godsend.
Yea flame belch seems to just be an armor option, it’s damage output is pretty weak.
I agree with this.
I got stuck on a platform puzzle in the later parts of the Cultist base.
Other than platform gripe, the game is fucking dope and strong candidate for GOTY!!!
I’m playing on Hurt Me Plenty, just to properly get used to the new mechanics and enjoy the game.
I’m in love the dash ability!!
Slightly off topic:
Tekno Virus reviews McFarlane’s DOOM Eternal figure.
Dash is sick. I love it.
And the meat hook? So awesome.
Game just crashed on me for the first time!!?
It didn’t freeze or anything, just went straight back to Steam.
If you want a bit more history on how the Night Sentinels and stuff came to be, this is a pretty good document:
I bit the bullet and tried out the steam version even though my PC is not so great and it convinced me to get the PS4 version (will request refund on Steam).
this game is so good.
WHY?
my laptop is from 2015 and doesn’t not run it well.
Trying to knock out doom 64, doom eternal, and Animal Crossing before FF7 remake comes out.
Just before this I got into Horizon Zero Dawn which is under rated game that I believe got overshadowed by other games that were released in the same year.
