Holy F this game feels weird when you don’t have dash.
This is where I feel torn regarding the upgrade system. If it were up to me, you’d have every ability from the start. Getting hamstrung on every new playthrough gets old for me. It’ll just be a drag say a few years from now when I get the feeling for some good ol’ Eternal then remember that I have to go through a couple of hours of slow gameplay before it gets really good.
But I know why they did it. I know they still had to sell this game to people who’d only ever play it once.
Why did it take me so long to figure out ice bomb -> blood punch + SSG or ballista takes out Doom Hunter’s sled instantly? After that it’s just rocket launcher lock on burst and he’s done.
I used to kite this bastard around trying to aim shots at the sled while avoiding fire like an idiot.
Damn, I woukd’ve told you had I known, unfortunately Ice Bombs don’t work on him during the boss fights on his stage, plus he has a lot more health, but yeah, he’s easy-peasy after that.
Definitely doing better on this second nightmare runthrough. Still nowhere near ready for a UN run, but last run, there was an arena on Cultist Base that I must’ve been stuck on for like two hours, and retried it at least 20 times. This time I beat it on my 3rd attempt. Still not great of course, but a drastic improvement.
I’m noticing the same thing in other spots too. The last arena on Exultia took my like 6 tries last time, this time I did it on my first.
I am skipping some Slayer Gates and things though. Did the one on Exultia because it’s probably the easiest one and really helps with your early game upgrades. I’m also skipping harder Secret Encounters, and some unnecessary collectables. I figure the quicker I can run through the campaign, the more I can do it and still have fun. Plus, on my eventual UN attempts, shaving that time will help keep my momentum and pace up and maybe I can do it in two nights (granted I’m successful) rather than three or four.
If I ever beat it on UN (who am I kidding lol), I may work on a 100% run, but I’d be happy enough without that extra run.
Anyways, when I’m done, I’ll post my upgrade path and stuff I’m doing/skipping. So far (just before last arena on Cultist Base) I’m happy with my choices.
Finished Super Gore Nest on Nightmare!!
It was damn near a breeze as compared to the earlier levels!!
I guess it due to having nearly all my arsenal and suit skills back.
You can easily get your main weapons fully upgraded by the time you need to even if you skip all secret encounters and slayers gates, so an UN run where you avoid the risky optional stuff definitely seems optimal.
There’s some piss easy secret encounters though like the lost souls one in Exultia / Hell which you might as well do.
Oh for sure, I think I’d just rather risk a slayer gate in the 2nd level, than delay an upgrade for an extra 60% of a level later (especially if that next level is Cultist Base). If missing that upgrade risks my death just the same, I’d rather do the risk earlier in the run.
How I’ve went so far is did both Secret Encounters and Gate on Exultia, and only the first Secret Encounter on Cultist Base.
By the time I got the SSG, I could fully upgrade it right away, and already spent 6 points on the Locked-on Rocket Quick Lock upgrade, and 3 points on Stick Bombs’ Quick Rack (reload).
And before I start Doom Hunter Base, I can fully upgrade the locked on Rockets (good against Doom Hunter), and then on Super Gore Nest, have enough points to fully upgrade Mobile Turret (or Arbalest if you prefer) once I get it.
Anyone try Eternal’s Battlemode yet?
I tried it once and honestly, may not play it again. It’s just kinda meh.
I really hope they change their minds and put in traditional deathmatch modes. I’d only be interested in playing multiplayer in this game as Slayer vs Slayer.
It’s actually got me thinking about getting another arena type FPS (ie, not Apex or COD) on PS4, but I don’t think there are many. But, I really love the feeling of dashing, swinging, and Meathooking around as the Slayer.
Destiny’s multiplayer can be fun, but it’s not really something you can just jump into and expect to do well. There are so many equipment upgrades and weapons and skills you’d want to unlock from playing PvE first.
I’d like to try out the MP in Eternal, but I’d rather go in with people in a party before playing randoms and embarrassing myself
I thought the same thing too, but I played two people that were very new to the game (level 6 and level 8 I think).
If you’re on PS4 (or anyone here) add me. PSN is Mattatsu_.
I’ll try as a demon if you want to play as the slayer, or vice versa. Despite what I said above, I would be interested in playing people here. Just don’t care much about it otherwise though.
Edit: forgot we need exactly 3 people to play… what a stupid game mode lol
I’ll add you, and maybe we can try it out sometime. Can you do private matches?
Also, if you don’t follow 3 Boosters yet, add me to that section once you befriend me on PS4.
I seem to earn a decent amount of XP which will help you unlock some of this series stuff.
What is 3 Boosters?
Edit: I just sent you a friend request through my phone app.
If you go to the event area on the main menu, you’ll see all the stuff to unlock by earning event XP during this series (we’re now on series 2).
If you go to the right-most tab, you’ll see a section for Boosters.
You can select three PSN friends (who have Doom Eternal) and when they earn event XP you can claim some points as well (without penalty to them), and it’ll help you unlock skins and stuff faster.
If you care about that stuff. The weapon skins in this series aren’t anything I’m too fond of, but that camo Slayer skin looks pretty dope.
Ah word. I’ll check it out next time I log on.
Yeah, it’s good. I follow 3 people already (don’t worry, you and I don’t have to be Boosters to each other) and they were earning so much XP that it gave me a whole level upgrade (though they don’t seem to be playing as much anymore).
Appreciate the thought dude but upfront, I’ve never been a competitive FPS guy. Add me as a friend though, maybe occasionally we’ll get a couple matches in. PSN is DHEvil.
This game’s crazy. I’m on my 5th playthrough and am still refining my mod upgrade path because everytime I play I realize some weapons are better for different situations that I didn’t realize before. I was also trying to stick to two guns an arena, because fumbling with the weapon wheel on console was annoying during crazy fights, but now I’m used to it and it’s really making things easier.
I’m at the point now of jotting down notes for almost every arena I walk into so I have my path down solid. It’ll help me remember, plus my next run should be pretty damn smooth.
To anyone scared of a Nightmare run, I will say my first run through was really hard. There were a few arenas I wondered if i’d ever get through… Some of those, I’m clearing my first time now. I still died a lot this run, but next time, I’ll die less.
